Don't be afraid to "GO THERE"...in DA3

DAO may have let you kill a little kid, but not much else was incredibly dark in relation to DA2. Unless I missed something. Which is entirely possible.

Nah, I could care less about boobs. My point is the world isn't as dark as it should be, as it claims to be. I mean hell, in DAO you had the option of killing a possessed kid. I never really believed that the world and the conflict was as bad as they claimed it was in DA2. I also remember reading an article recently about how God of War developers were going to take a step back from stuff like violence against women, because of the sensitive world today. People are afraid to go to these places these days for fear of being in the spotlight of some angry mob arguing about rights. The few people that do go there, in a good way, are now just said to be looking for shock value. Heavy Rain is a game that went "there" with It's story and characters and look how well that paid off.
I'm okay with games taking a step back from violence against women. They already suffer enough violence in real life.
Personally, as long as the story and characters are interesting I don't feel the need to have a particularly dark world, or to show it outright just because.

Penetration is the idea OP is getting at here. Let's not beat around the bush.
I knew you'd get to the thrust of the matter.
Look, Leggy is never on to ignore deep and hard facts.
Guys, we need to get back on topic or OP will punish us severely, like the naughty girls and boys we are.

Here's the kicker: From the quality of many M-rated games, one can easily suspect that the M rating was specifically to entice a younger crowd to purchase the game.
Let's face it. The ESRB requirements to receive an M rating are mostly not the same things that make content be mature. They're the things that younger crowds find exciting for being taboo in the face of authority.
You don't need an M rating to have a mature story, but M sells.

There were a few other parts in the game that escape my mind as of now but I would have to go through DAO and dlc again for a refresher. One thing I do remember is that there was ususally a sense of dread and a dark, and forboding atmosphere surrounding many of the plot points. It felt like people were in a dire situation, their lives were horrible and that if you did the wrong thing, bad things would happen. While the game might not be as dark and somber as Heavy Rain or even The Walking Dead, it still came quite a bit further than DA2. The only dark part of DA2 from what I can remember righ now is when ::::::Spoiler Alert: (Though I don't know why you are here if you haven't played this yet.):::: the serial killer kidnaps your mother and mutilates her.

Amd yes. I am straight. I am not attracted to men at all. I know this is a fact that disagrees with you, as you pretty much called me a homophobe all evening yesterday.
If Bioware shows full frontal male nudity, I won`t be bothered by it one bit. But it won`t make me want to have sex with a guy either.

*sigh* I give up.
I don't want to pick up that discussion again. I never assumed you were a homophobe and in none of my posts did I say so, but if you felt that way, then I am sorry.
Let's go back to the topic at hand, shall we?

That's better. And yes, I do agree that DA2 lost a bit of DAO's "grimdark"-ness, which to be honest wasn't that big a part of the game in the first place. Still, Bioware has definitely seemed to have given up on selling Dragon Age as a "Dark Fantasy" franchise, and has instead opted for normal fantasy - except with more boobs and gore.
Now please, next time you make a thread, don't assume your fellow forumgoers are long-distance telepaths.
I think the only really good solid dark moment in Origins was the whole setup with the Broodmother. It was really well-timed and they gave you just enough info to really recognize the horror of what Branka did without overstressing it. Similar moments in DA2 (your mom) fell a bit flat for me--there was too much buildup over too long a time, and the atmospheric setting was all wrong.
One of the moments in Origns that really got to me otherwise was encountering that red-haired kid on the bridge in Lothering yelling "Mother!". I still feel sad every time I see him because no matter what you say to him, he's probably going to wind up getting lost or left behind and die.
I think DA2 was different largely because there wasn't the sense of some hopeless impending disaster, it was just a bunch of people who actually DID have other options being really STUPID. It's hard to feel that level of despair over people being idiots. More fulminent, undirected rage.
I don't think DA3 has to go either of those directions--it may be better off with more of an "assembling the pieces" motif where the protagonist has a certain amount of emotional detachment and is in a position to push through some really tough things that need to be done.
