We all love the darkspawn. They were our sworn enemies in Dragon Age: Origins; they were the catalyst for the chain of events that became our adventure across Fereldan. Defeating them was apparent right from the start and ultimately, they were our final objective. No enemy in Origins had quite as much variety as the darkspawn had; their seemingly limitless numbers allow operators in every field of expertise. They were the quintessential foe in Dragon Age Origins.

But in the face of Dragon Age II, our dear, beloved darkspawn suffered the worst kind of insult you can give to an enemy. Being ignored. Dragon Age II had a much different story compared to Origins and because of that, our poor darkspawn suffered greatly. The darkspawn shifted into pitiful versions of themselves. And they weren't as important unfortunately, being an almost mediocre antagonist in DA2's storyline.

But we can't just pretend DA2 didn't happen. It did. Some of these new concepts can be tweaked; made better and can still work. In order to restore our cherished enemies, there is only one thing that we can do.

The Darkspawn must be Reborn.

In DA2 they were more like Respawn. Given the waves. Just saying it.

Their designs didn`t bother me that much, to be honest. Well, maybe the new Genlocks did (genlocks are the dwarven ones right? I just can`t stop mixing up the names).

The genlocks are the darkspawn born from a dwarven Broodmother, yes. The DA2 Genlock has potential but the DA2 Hurlock has to go... unless they're ghouls, then that could work... maybe...

Yeah, DA2's hurlocks look like Skeletor's hunchbacked cousins, ogres look like roid rage sumo wrestlers, and emissaries look like they're preparing to throw me a barbeque. Mind you, I'm not particularly keen on DAO's LOTR movies' orcs and Uruk-hai rip-offs either.

Redesign is sorely needed. Maybe a mix of the two?

After all we went through with the blight, is it really wise to start the thread with, "We all love the darkspawn"? XP

Eh, the low-tier darkspawn don't interest me, and I don't care much how they look because they're going to be grass to the lawnmower anyway. I kind of preferred the DA2 look, actually, because the ones in Origins seemed to have some scary sentience and drive that never materialized. The Children were much better in Awakening, and the ones in DA2 looked like what they were--trash mobs.

Now, if we get Corypheus and the Architect reappearing, perhaps with some of their other buddies . . . that could get scary. Or weird mutations of the corruption due to people poking at it. But the base darkspawn are more sad than evil.

It was the Hurlocks I thought was ok, hehe. Didn`t like the genlocks.

We wouldn't have played DAO if we didn't like the darkspawn, now would we?

Always the best.

there should be another massive blight in the third or fourth game

The Darkspawn were DA:O's point, they've been dealt with. Outside of Blights, they're a backround element to everyone except the dwarves and should remain that way, at least until Corypheus / the Architect can create more "human" Darkspawn like Awakening did (brilliant writing, imo).

Darkspawn in DA:O looked pretty awesome. Horrifying, revolting. The Darkspawn in DA2 just looked silly. Campy and cheesy.

eh, I am kind of done with the Darkspawn. Unless there's another blight or something, including them in a game that seems like it will focus on the conflict between mages and templars would be like they're there just to be there.

Speak for yourself.

The reason that the darkspawn were so varied was because we had to fight them for pretty much an entire game. They are the Grey Warden's sworn enemies, and central to their theme of vigilance.

But ultimately the darkspawn, as well as the Blight altogether, were boring excuse plots that we've all seen before. Just because the frame story of the Blight led to an entire game's worth of incredible storytelling doesn't mean that everyone wants Bioware to "staple two Archdemons together and call it a super blight."

Let's focus on the things that actually made the game good, and not one of the most generic elements of the story.

/unpopular opinions.
