It's funny that you would choose to mention Leliana.I can see, perhaps, the inclusion of Leliana as a companion.
In my main Origins game, Leliana was killed because my Mage attempted to prevent the discovery of Andraste's ashes. She is, for all intents and purposes, dead. So she seemed like a relatively poor choice to me, for future content.
I'm sure you could imagine my surprise when she appeared in Dragon Age 2! Though I'm not unforgiving to the writer's decision, it was a poorly thought out decision on their part, I feel. However, now that she is once again alive, her inclusion is likely. Though perhaps not as a companion, it would not be entirely unexpected.
I agree that the inclusion of companions with no real forethought or planning is a relatively silly idea. Especially in terms of companions such as Carver and Anders that are capable of being very much.. Well, dead. But there are many companions that people seem bizarrely insistent on, that makes no sense at all
I agree that there are limits to what are possible in this respect. It would be silly if you somehow managed to have every new protagonist stumble across a single companion multiple times over the years that these games span, and seeking them out would depend entirely on the importance that they might have in the grand scheme of the main plot.you have to question why does this one person keep getting mixed up in the affairs of these physically and chronologically distant heroes?
A no-named bar vagrant is unlikely to be vital in any future content, they may have previously traveled with a Hero and assisted in their quest, but they are essentially a nobody and in times of war I fail to see how they would be sought out for any purpose.
A big player in Mage politics or an avid Chantry supporter that is used as an icon for either faction would be infinitely more likely to be sought out by any faction that is brokering for peace.
In terms of the Inquisition game, I have no real names to offer you.Which of the companions that have appeared in the past do YOU think could make sense as companions for an Orlesian Inquisitor, ten years after the fall of the Archdemon?
In terms of returning companions?
Though I have never considered him to be directly tied to the Inquisition game.. Sebastian Vael has had a great build up to become a companion in future content. He is a key political player in the Free Marches - He may not be the ruling power of Starkhaven, but he is undoubtedly linked to it in a manner that cannot be ignored.
Although I never truly considered how he may tie in with the Inquisition game, Sebastian is also affiliated with the Chantry and his allegiance would make a powerful contribution to either the Templars, fighting for the continued rule of the Chantry and it's containment of Mages, or the Mages, fighting for the freedom of Andraste's people.
Regardless of if he were to appear in the Inquisition or not, with all the political tension brewing in Thedas, between Orlais, Fereldan, the Free Marches, Tevinter and the Qunari, not to mention the obvious Mage and Templar conflict in the Inquisition, it would be difficult to keep a key political player, like Sebastian, outside of possible future content.
He isn't a loved companion - Far from it, I myself dislike a great many things about his personality, but it cannot be denied that he could ultimately be essential to the political power of the Free Marches, and the conflict that is brewing between the nations of Thedas.
Sebastian, however hated he might be, makes a good example of why it may occasionally be essential to bring companions back in future content.

Female Rogue - Sweet natured but a kleptomaniac
Male Kossith - Hates the Qun and everything about it.
Female Grey Warden - tossed out of the wardens for some reason or other.
Orlesian Chevalier - Spoiled and used to the good life.
Dwarven female Paragon - No not a crazy one like Ohgrens wife.
Ooops, I named 6.

Ah, yes, the "Leliana is dead" question. Here's my thoughts on it: From now on, don't make characters killable unless you are 100% certain you are not going to use them again in a major role! I understand they did a bit of hand-waving with that one (maybe she was badly injured, and limped away or something). But in the future, only let us kill characters that you do not intend to use again.
Although I feel it could have been at least acknowledged. Maybe if you import a save with a "dead" Leliana, she has a really ugly scar on her face or something. At least let us know you tried.

Ah, Vael. Yes, I think he was actually left open-ended for the planned expansion for DA2, "Exalted March". I have a strong suspicion his story was to carry forward there. But since it got canned... who knows?
But I think Sebastian would be a better NPC at this point, as either the ruler of Starkhaven or a devout priest.

1. An older male ranger. Like around Wynne's age. Someone who has seen a lot of conflict and is good at survival. Maybe a loyal dog as a pet companion.
2. An elf male mage. Very calm and dignified. More of a diplomat. [DPS]
3. A dwarf female warrior [tank]. Very mother-bear type personality, but still loud and dwarven.
4. A female [rogue/mage] alchemist character. Lots of potions and poisons for the party, maybe a little eccentric.
5. A 'monster' type, something akin to Shale. Could be anything that lore will allow. [DPS]

2.Cassandra
3. A sassy female elf character. (Not a Zevran female clone!)
4. A group of bards who are as loveable as they are skilled at killing but they didn't want to serve their noble any longer.
5. I'd love to have Varric or Ohgren back.
6. A swash-buckling Kossith.
I know it's more than five but I just couldn't choose. =)

I agree completely. Despite how angered people are by "plot armour" it can be a relatively essential tool to conserve the integrity of future content, as Leliana has proven. From now on, don't make characters killable unless you are 100% certain you are not going to use them again in a major role
He was.Yes, I think he was actually left open-ended for the planned expansion for DA2
With the cancellation of the Exalted March, his story has been left wide open and the potential that was initially planned for the expansion pack has not disappeared. Regardless of what they intended - That potential is still there to be used for future content, and though it may not be as a companion, it will undoubtedly be used in some capacity.
Whether he is a companion or not, I would like to see his character find closure - Untapped potential is a terrible thing, and Sebastian has it in spades. Though I find it difficult to believe he would end up an idle NPC.
I personally cannot imagine that Sebastian has retaken Starkhaven, not after his involvement in Kirkwall, how could a man that played an active role in the downfall of Kirkwall possibly gain the political or military support required to retake a city as powerful as Starkhaven?
I also doubt that he would remain in the Chantry, idly twiddling his thumbs. Not after the death of Elthina, he would need something to distract him from the loss. Though, anything is possible I suppose.
That's all unimportant really, I was merely using Sebastian as an example - It is entirely possible to build a character up for future content and I honestly believe, if a companion is created with future development in mind, then that potential should be used in some way and not just left hanging.
Though the inclusion of previous companion characters for the sake of it, as you have said, it is completely unnecessary and an utterly horrific thing to do.
It has been a very enlightening discussion and I appreciate that you took the time to explain your view points, I agree with most of them. I'm also glad you've taken my points of view into account. It's always nice to have a polite discussion on topics such as this and have them end in mutual understanding.
