Agreeing with my avatar twin here.
Maraas was interesting. I would totally be cool with him returning as a party member.
Otherwise, I agree with the people who have been chanting, 'New Character, New Character, New Character...'

Basically, no one who's played a major role in either previous game.
More seriously :
1 - Grey Warden
2 - Orlesian chevalier
3 - Kossith ( mercenary )
4 - A templar or a Seeker
5 - Tevinter Magister.

Lightspawn is what we will call it.Cylanthegreat wrote...
3. An Awakened Darkspawn. Before any of you say that this cannot be done, I raise you one question: Have you ever, by chance, played Fallout 2? There was a character that served as a possible companion who was a Deathclaw. When taken into cities, he would done a heavy cloak and appear to just be an overlarge hunchback (or something along those lines) and no one would look at him twice. The largest challenge of making this person a party member would be as follows: A. Introducing him in a manner so that the Inquisitor and his/her companions would not immediately strike the Awakened down, and B. Dealing with the fact that he could make those around him contract the taint. My thoughts on this would be that, during some exploration of the Deep Road for whatever reason, you run into the Architect, who offers his help from a safe distance, and sends you an awakened to serve as an envoy, or something along those lines. If the architect is dead, then it could be presented in a different manner that would be equally plausible or implausible, depending on how you view this idea. Perhaps he could be 'special' in that he doesn't spread the taint or something. And on a last note, you know what would be awesome? If this awakened was a Shriek. But that would probably be pushing my luck.

1 - [Mage] Finn (from Witch Hunt, folks).
2 - [Warrior] Female Elf. Admittedly Fenris and the likely inclusion of Cassandra (also awesome, and my substitute for this #) have further dented my chances of seeing this, but there are many kinds of warrior after all so you never know. I picture her with two axes. Could be a Grey Warden. Also drinks a lot, possibly Oghren's soul mate.
3 - [Rogue] Varric or Sigrun. The latter is beyond unlikely, the former isn't exactly an outlandish theory given he survives.*
4 - [Rogue] Cole from Asunder. I think he would work well as an optional companion though, ala Loghain even. That said he could be a required companion who you then later get the chance to... remove from your party, too.
5 - [Warrior or Mage] Kossith. Depending on the class it would be a radically different character, but either archetype would interest me greatly. After the Saarebas mission in DA2 I'm still sorta hoping for a Mage Kossith, one who is completely bonkers, but in a fun way! The Warrior would have to be very different to Sten, something like Maraas would work I suppose.
* - That said I suppose it's possible to overuse characters and maybe Varric wouldn't be the same without Hawke... He has to have an important role regardless (it is known). But a sub for this spot could be:
[Rogue] Female Dwarf. Think Toph from Avatar TLA if you've seen it. A character with two sides, often conflicting with each other. Streetwise and dangerous, yet was raised as a Noble (or an otherwise wealthy Dwarf caste).

- Maraas (because reasons)
- Cassandra (because reasons)
- Sketch (because reasons)
- A Grey Warden (because the bearded dude from the survey was awesome looking)
- That pipe-smokin' Rivaini woman from the survey (because awesome/reasons)
That's five, right?

- Saarebas Companion or generally a Kossith who's left the Qun or was never raised in it.
- Shale. Maybe she's back to being an angry dwarven female again who knows.
- A female mage who is basically not a blood mage. Sure I romanced the last two blood mages (Morrigan and Merril) but I'd like to see some variation.
- Dalish warrior. We've had two Dalish companions but they've both been mages.
- An ash warrior. Complete with their own Mabari.

Morrigan isn't a blood mage. You can give her the blood mage spec, but that isn't canon.

We had a Dalish warrior companion in Witch Hunt.

Don't want anyone who was in the group from previous games. Don't really even want them making an appearance, though I wouldn't mind hearing from someone else how things are going.

2. male kossith (Maraas!!!)
3. male elf (more Fenris-y than Zevran-y)
4. young male mage like Alain or Finn
5. a girl...
See how generous I am; I allowed for one girl xD No, I kid, of course, but just in terms of LIs those four fellas would appeal to me the most (not me personally... except maybe the kossith ... yummy xD)
