...were so much fun? I have never played a vanguard in any of my playthroughs throughout the entire trilogy. My usual tactic is, if I can't just shoot them to death, I'll snipe and headshot my way through combat. Never did the close-up blasting away with a shotgun, and melee'ing.
I figured I had time to do another playthrough before my copy of Borderlands 2 arrives in the mail, and I imported a femshep vanguard save, that I downloaded from masseffectsaves.com. I figured what the hell.
I'm still early in the game, still on Mars, so I haven't got to change my armour or weapons yet. Any tips on loadouts, and also skill choices are much appreciated.
Damn, How come nobody told me Vanguards...

Charge and Nova are pretty much your bread and butter. If specced right you can have Charge fully restore shields while Nova can be used twice in a row (though at reduced damage). Effectively, with the right cooldown you can charge into a group, nova twice and then charge at a new target to regain your shields, becoming a sort of explosive pinball. I tend to use a Carnifex along with a Wraith, though just a Carnifex might be OK early on. Most shotguns probably work well as long as you're charging a lot.SporkFu wrote...

For certain enemies where charging isn't always the best option, it's a good idea to look at either biotic explosions set up by teammates or pick other skills to complement this. I don't tend to put too many points into Pull, but it can be handy for dealing with Guardians. I tend to use Shockwave because it still staggers them, allowing you to get a few shots in at a distance and it can be handy for triggering biotic explosions without needing to charge in (very useful for Banshees or Turrets).
It's a lot fun either way, and it's worth experimenting with skills and squadmates. I tend to take at least Liara or Javik, so one can set up an explosion with Stasis or Dark Channel, but using Javik's Dark Channel as your bonus can work quite well, too.

There are no such things as poor choices for bonus powers.
But Reave is just amazing.
1. Reave does some damage to armour, barriers and health. (Tiny bit to shields too). But don't rely on Reave's splash damage.
2. Reave makes you tougher to take down thanks to its hardening function.
3. Check out the explosions below
Reave then Charge = Biotic Explosion
Reave then Nova = Biotic Explosion
Reave then Shockwave = Biotic Explosion
Pull then Reave = Biotic Explosion
Lifting Shockwave then Reave = Biotic Explosion
Gun down foe with incendiay ammo then Reave as killing blow = Incendiary Explosion
Gun down foe with cryo ammo then Reave as killing blow = Cryo Explosion
I haven't even touched the amazing synergies (i.e. explosions) you can have when you bring squadmates into the equation.

If I lived in a cave, I'd never want to leave.
Especially if it were the "Bat Cave".
So finding out how awesome the Vanguard is, wouldn't be on my Bat Raidar.

Its my favourite class by far. I feel most comfortable with it so I can give you some tips.
It really depends on what you feel you need. Do you want to go all out Shotgun with Pistol support only? Or do you also want an AR for increased versatility at a distance? Its all up to preference. For me, I have lately been running Vindicator V, with Reegar Carbine V/Claymore V. With the Reegar I sometimes also put on the Carnifex/Paladin (Both V) because all of those weapons are light. However with the Claymore, my style changes. Go just Claymore+Good Heavy Pistol.
However, one thing is for certain. Spec Nova for Half Damage so you can double Nova, which is a larger equivalent in damage. Reave is also the greatest Bonus Power IMO. It eradicates the long range weakness, sets up and Detonates BE's, and compliments the class so well.
Rifles to consider:
Mattock/Vindicator/Avenger/Saber
(However, Saber you get later, like way later and the Mattock is heavier than the other too, so adjust based on your preference)
Shotguns:
Claymore/Reegar Carbine/Wraith/Geth Plasma Shotgun
Pistols:
Carnifex/Paladin
Good luck!

Thanks everyone for all the tips and ideas. I've gone with reave as my bonus power, and am not a fan of the Reegar Carbine, so am using the N7 Crusader until I either get enough creds for the Wraith, or find something better. Gotta say again charging and shotgun headshots are an extremely satisfying way to kill TIM's flunkies.

No Vanguard is complete without the Talon pistol.

Completed my first play though as a Vanguard. Got fairly monotonous after a while,
Charge, Nova, Charge Nova, Charge Nova … … Charge, Nova, Charge, Nova, “need someone to charge, Oh! everyone dead. Time to move on.”
Its the easiest class to play, the one tactic works all the time. Even on insanity, although there you need to take a little care, as one slip can be fatal.

Because they're not really as fun in ME1 & ME2 as they are in ME3. Vanguarding in ME3 is a life styleSporkFu wrote...
