Kirkwall is pretty women friendly. Aside from the Viscount all the major political figures are women and no one bats an eye. And the Chantry is a Matriarchy

Antiva - Very rare to see a female assassin (bar that one mage during the Zevran Ambush).

On the other hand, Zevran talks about Rinna, who was a fellow Crow. I strongly doubt the Crows recruit mostly men, if only because one of their major techniques for getting close to a mark is seduction, and not all people can be seduced by men, not even ridiculously awesome elven men.
I suspect that the "unthinkable" women in battle means more . . . knights, warriors. Which still points to inequality, but there are definitely female Crows. (Also, I would argue that the mage from Zevran's ambush was an apostate he hired in Ferelden, personally. He said he was the only person who bid on the contract, and since he didn't really want to succeed, he wasn't going to go through the trouble to enlist a lot of his fellow Crows to help him, that would be too much like trying not to die - but this thread isn't about Zev, so I'll let that go now.

I don't think the Crows are going to avoid doing something just because most of Antiva considers it 'unthinkable'. I mean, isn't that what you expect of a guild of shadowy assassins?
