Yay!

Origins were the reason I got into DA.

Absolutely would love to see the return of Origin stories.

They were to brief for my taste in DAO and rarely came up. I would rather have one central background that is highly relevant rather than six that is tacked on.

Yes absolutely 100%, because from an rpg perspective it helps ground your character in the story. It helps determine what your motivations are for doing what you do.

I would like to be able to choose a race, but I couldn't really care less about origin stories. I'd rather start with what's important to the actual plot than character backgrounds that are mostly irrelevant to the overall story.

The origin stories were a fantastic addition to DA:O and greatly added to the replay value.

As a result, I played the game several times in order to try each of the various origins. I felt that DA2 had a significantly lower replay value as a result.

I'm definitely for origin stories. Loved them in Origins and I would have loved to have one for Hawke in DA2.

I actually liked them alot. They might be harder to work though depending on what path DA3 wants to take. The best part about the Origins was that they served as an introduction to all the major factions the player would be dealing with. For some reason, I feel like DA3 is going to be a bit more focused in its goal.

Nay.

I enjoyed them, but it did seem like the "caring" for the NPCs that we were allegedly supposed to get from playing through them, did not exist. The characters in the Origins simply died far too quickly or got too little screentime to matter.

A similar example from DA2 is the early death of the sibling. Didn't impact me very much. Now when it came to the Deep Roads and I had Bethany along during my first playthrough, I was crazy worried that she was going to die since I had gotten to know her character better. Luckily I got the Grey Warden option. I would've been pretty devastated if I hadn't brought Anders along.

Long story short, the Origins in Origins, while cool, were not significantly long enough to make the NPCs have meaning and impact. The resources devoted to doing origin stories like that would be way better used elsewhere.

Good point on the blank slate but I'm still saying yay to class origins. What do you think of different classes having different origins?

The real issue with the class origins is that the story doesn't seem to make the same distinction as with the Mage class. None of the DA:O origins (for example) distinguish between playing as a Warrior or Rogue; it's only the Mage class which necessarily separates the character. Being a Mage seems to play a bigger impact on the character's identity/experience than the other two.

I really liked the origins in DAO, but after you reach Ostagar the consistency of your unique background becomes somewhat murky and makes certain conversations awkward; e.g. A dwarf character explaining an aspect of Orzammar's culture to a dwarf noble character as if he/she were an outsider.

Also some of the origins seemed like they required a lot more custom dialog than they had. Like if you are playing a Dalish shouldn't basically everyone in Denerim, Redcliff, or the tower of Magi be gawking at you?

Considering the diversity of the origins I think the developers did a good job overall, but ultimately there was just too much to manage. I totally support playable race, but for consistency I'm in favor of a more generic background; e.g. adoptive parents, etc.

that is true, but i think class origins could actually work in DA3 better, if you are a warrior or mage you would be attacked on site by the opposing faction.

I'm all for Origins being included in the game, but only if it actually has an impact in the storyline. In Origins, yeah each Origin was unique, but had very little impact on the actual story.

If it's included in DA3, I want people to know that I came from a Circle of Magi, or that I'm an Elf, and react and change their responses depending on that. Potentially actually shutting certain parts of the game off, depending on my Origin and Race.

So, yeah, I'm for it, if they have time to do it, and do it right this time. Just don't make some short story before the actual game. Make it real, and have an impact on the rest of the game.

I don't need origins. I would, however, really like to be able to choose some sort of background for my character, something like what they did in ME and maybe see that reflected in the game in some way.

Had an idea similar to Knight of Dane's, apparently was done in Mass Effect. Maybe bring that back?

I think classes should act like origins.

I agree with this. Give me three short, but unique, openings to introduce me to my character, some important NPCs, and maybe one of my companions. Focus on my abilities and skill tree, to help me setup for what I want to specialize as for the rest of the game.

I think it would work.

Yeah, that'd work too. But having a couple alternate origins has potential to increase replay ability.

I hope they bring origins back. They were the best part of DA:O.

I think what we can all agree on (possibly) is that it can be done, and even add to the game, and it is up to Bioware if they want to do it or not.

I'm more concerned that this is an excellent game with good combat mechanics, consistency in storyline, well contructed plot arc, and full bodied (literally too?) characters. If they can do that, I'll live without a chosen origin or race.
