This and all other posts comparing Borderlands 2 to ME3 are stupid. The games provide widely divergent experiences and satisfy divergent tastes. BL2 won't kill ME3 because it's not even competing for the same niche.

Who is comparing the games? People are simply making an observation about the changing playerbase in me3. What niche is me3 in?

Let me help you then.

upinya slayin wrote...

This doesn't count the people on the forums but people need to realize
the reality of hpw bad the playerbase is and how its gnna get worse. The
people who weren't playing much have moved onto BL2, alot of the high
end players have moved onto BL2 as well.

Please note here, mbergeron, that OP upinya slayin suggests that to play one game is to leave another. That's like saying, "The ground is wet, therefore it is raining."

"People are playing Borderlands 2, therefore they have moved on from Mass Effect 3." That's the implication of upinya slayin's original post, and it's not a valid conclusion from the premise.

Moreover, upinya slayin's original premise - "the people that play ME3 are the same people that play Borderlands 2" - betrays a hidden premise - "Mass Effect 3 and Borderlands 2 are competing for the same playerbase." The caveats to upinya's original assertion, "The people who don't play ME3 much have moved on to BL2," and, "The higher-ranking players have moved on to BL2," both rely on the hidden premise.

You're welcome for the free lesson in close reading.

Competing for the same playerbase isn't an  assumption; they're both RPG-shooters, so it's actually reasonable to think they share a large portion of their playerbases. It isn't even just a deduction; it's a concrete observation that a friends list comprised almost entirely of people from ME3's MP is now playing Borderlands. There's also no point in the post where he claims Borderlands 2 is fantastamazing in the OP. You didn't even claim there was one in your silly rant. In what sense is your post a reply to the other poster?

In what sense? Zero, mberg asked why I claimed that OP compared BL2 to ME3. I laid out that reasoning. I also didn't claim that the premise was wrong, just hidden. ME3 and BL2 do share the same userbase, but it's not identical. There's divergence between what the games offer that allows both to succeed at the same time, with the same players.

I didn't rant. I deconstructed. Go find the original context to my post and you'll be closer to understanding how conversations work.

To say there is comparisons going on in the OP is your opinion and how you interpreted what slayin wrote, I think you tried to look smart for the thread and therefore read way too much into what he put, it is not something that needs to be analyzed so deeply as to try and pull out some hidden meaning simply to try and justify what you said. Again what you said is your opinion and you are entitled to it, but perhaps the face value of what slayin posted is enough to get his opinion across to those who read this thread.

Hey brain trust, I think you missed my point.

Did not.

You claimed BL2 and ME3 mp weren't "competing for the same niche".  My point was that the co-op shooter/rpg element in both makes them similar enough that they are at the very least competing for many of the same players.

I agree with you. That's why I said they offer "widely divergent experiences." Because the games meet different kinds of interest - one's easy to pick up and play for twenty minutes, while the other encourages/requires extended play sessions - the same playerbase benefits from the availability of both games. The same playerbase can play both games. And they will.

As for you playing multiple games, I don't care if you (or anyone else) plays 10 games at the same time. If you're playing another game and not increasing the amount of time you play by at least as much as you play those other games, then it means that ME3 mp's player base is being negatively affected. It's not simply a matter of how many people play, it's how much they play. If you put the game in for a match or two over the weekend, you're not really adding much to the player base.

A fine point. My response? I'm still able to pug into lobbies on XBL with unknown good players on every difficulty with roughly the same amount of time/trouble as before. The playerbase is at last count huge. It's unlikely a game that doesn't meet the same hankering - wave-based co-op - will be displaced by a quest-based co-op with randomly-generated loot.

In short, the reason I take issue with the original post is as follows:

The games, while sharing some mechanics and attracting players from the same camps, do not do the same thing. Because they do not do the same thing, the notion that one will kill the other does not hold water. The games can both succeed at the same time, supported by the same playerbase, because each offers the same playerbase a different experience tailored to different expectations and demands on time.

The OP does not say BL2 will kill ME3, the player base will shrink and no that doesn't mean if you play today or 3 months from now you wont be able to find a game, it is simply saying that yes when new games come out old games will lose some of their player base again not all, but some.

Honestly, who cares. Games come and go, myself, i will stick to weekend events because the monotony of the single game mode. Its not the end of the world when the player base is dismal, it just happens with time.

It would be nice if they added a say War Multiplayer Simulation?
For example: Once a week all players prepare for War with the Reapers.
Groups of each class to do their specific job in the war. (Teamwork)
The Adepts Adept
The Soldiers Soldier
The Sentinels Sentinel
The Engineers Engineer
The Infiltrators Infiltrate
The Vanguards Vanguard
xD
If we successfully win the war, we get a victory pack. o.0 It would be a lot of fun to fight alongside like 7 or 11 other Infiltrators to snipe enemies from our perch point.

I like this idea. I would love to see a content expansion for multiplayer, and would pay money for new modes. That's what it would take, probably, for BioWare to develop new base content as opposed to new maps/weapons

...this is a very grim thread. I like Jiovanie's idea, but I doubt that they'd be able to do that with the current game. ME3 multiplayer was an experiment to see how the public would respond to it. I'd say it was successful, and am anxious to see how the multiplayer will evolve for the next game. I'm hoping it will involve some sort of persistent multiplayer character, or at least more in the way of customization.

I love ME3, but Borderlands 2 was only released two days ago. So yes, a lot of people are gonna put down a game they've had for half a year and invest some (or a lot) of time into it. I personally have been playing the hell out of Borderlands 2. I'll be back to ME3 when I'm done with it. That's the way a lot of people are. All of my friends I met on ME3 MP, we've been playing Borderlands together and we all plan on going back at some point.

Of course any given games player base is going to go down when a big game comes out. But it won't stay down if the game is good enough. In my personal opinion, ME3 is fun at times, and is good enough for people to come back to. In any case, a lot of people will come back when they hear news of new dlc. Even more so if that dlc includes a new faction. Which is very likely to happen in the future.

All speculation aside, just give it some time.

Also, as for farming, I actually rarely run into those rooms unless I'm looking for them. Lately, I've been looking for them more than I'd like to admit. Borderlands 2 is making me lazy :P

I've noticed this too. I was going online a month ago and all my buddies were on ME3 - now everyone's on BL2. Which I'm not really interested in. Meh.
Don't worry Upinya, I'm not going anywhere! ;)
(I'm not the same caliber as ArelaX but then... I play for the lols)

Well my friends were back last night. Two days ago all my friends that were on were playing something other than ME3, but last night 1/2 of my friends that were on -line were back playing ME3. I could tell you why, but it does not matter. I suspect that ME3 has a quality that is going to keep quite a few loyal fans playing for a good while yet.

Agreed. I picked up BL2 on Tuesday and have played it for a few evenings offline to check it out without any friends distracting me yet, but I'll also still be playing ME3 quite regularly as well. Probably will do a 50/50 type of ratio.

Will be doing nothing but ME3 during operation hours, however. True patriot here. Image IPB

I have zero interest in BL2. The only reason I have taken a short break from ME3 is to replay ME2 so I could change up a couple of my choices and try out some new things.

Straight back to ME3 for me. So I haven't played a lot of MP over the past week. A couple of games here and there and managed to find some incredibly crap players who were trying to play Gold and were nowhere near Gold standard. Have had some great silver games though, helping out newer players who are still getting the hang of things. If that's going to be my lot, then I don't really care. MP is fun. I have maxed out everything except URs so I mostly just play for kicks these days.

Anyone on PS3 that is still loving this game can add me :-)

Yeah! (That said I'm at away this weekend so can only do it maybe tonight or probably Sunday. Hopefully my connection will stop being so incredibly crappy by then! So hopefully catch you then... )

I agree, although this weekend event may be the one that weens me off of them.

I have noticed a number of people on my friend's list playing BL2, but I played some PUGs last night for the first time since Tuesday and had no problem finding decent U/U/G lobbies. Got one average gold skill group, one with a couple of elite level players, then finished off the night with a run of games with a really fun group. Full credits everytime. There are still players out there on PS3.

I'm on PS3, and since I got it last Friday, BL2 has been my main course, and ME3 has been for pudding, so I'm still playing :D.
ME3 is too much fun, and you can slot a session in without committing to playing for hours if you want. (but press X to run, press X to run :s )
