Furthermore, these 'romances' are just a cheap marketing ploy used by EA to attract female gamers who would otherwise play The Sims if the characters spoke a real language.

you just keep on generalizing thereImage IPB (edit, I guess you apologized, I missed it. but accepted)
Sims. lol.  Lots of female gamers play other types of games as evident in the responses in this thread. The entire reason I bought my Xbox was for Left 4 Dead.

Some people think that romance adds to a story.  I certainly do.  Most great literature has love and romance, at least as a sub plot.  It gives the characters more depth.

I agree on this.

Also would have been very neat to see snipts of Aveline and Donnic's wedding. I don't need *my* PC to marry the LI but if the option is there AND it works with the story/personalities, then sure, I don't mind it being included. Babies? Nah, no time for those, busy trying to survive and save the world over here!

I'm also in support of tragedy - how about after the weddding, they share a nice evening or moment then PC's betrothed is kidnapped/killed in front of them ala Jenny in The Darkness.. ahh the feels. could be good motivation for vendetta. just thinking out loud although that may be too.. obvious/contrived

I'd just like to add that I totally bought mine to become Dragonborn and kill frost giants.

Good to see someone else really appreciates that scene. Watching Jenny die before your eyes and being unable to do anything was probably one of my top five emotional moments in gaming. I felt like absolute crap after that. Image IPB

Well, and I like to add that I cannot think of something less romantic than what we see in Skyrim. "Oh, you wear an amulet of Mara? Let's get married!"

Yeah...fantasy-worlds, where life and love is so easy...

Talking about secret weddings...

Last Endeavour fact: Endeavour carried the first married couple to go into space together. They had married in secret.

LOL. The romance in skyrim is so bad. If you can't do it right, then eh. However I still loved the fact that my husband would give me about 200 gold every other day, plus I could buy/sell stuff with him easily, instead of tracking down another vendor. But eh. Oh also, every man in the world of Skyrim looks like a turd. (My opinion, but seriously, no attractive dudes whatsoever. Yuck.) I married Farkas at the amusing request of my real life husband. He watched me play the game and kept saying, "You're right, all the dudes are gross. Marry that werewolf dude who looks like Rob Zombie." It was so f*cking funny, I just had to.

Dragon's Dogma is worse. Talking to an inn keeper, or an weapon merchant too often would result in them being considered a love interest. Sometimes you would never know until the epilogue where the unknown li, and  the pc play tonsil hockey, then FTB.

Overall, how is Dragon's Dogma? I'm looking for something to sink my teeth into until Dishonored comes and wikipedia at least is making some comparisons to Dark Souls, which I loved.

Well, I wonder if it so funny with Farkas if he turns into a werewolf and ...no, lets not got there, 'tis a silly place....

Anyway, that is exactly the point: A marriage should only be there if it makes sense. Sense to the romace-plot set up, and to the personality of the LI involved. It has to grow naturally from the relationship.

that being said, I actually find it hard to picture a lot of chars in Bioware-games suited for marriage...Alistair of course, maybe Lelianna (though she is a rover, but she would wed if the shoes are pretty?), Kaidan, Ashley...

But Isabella? Only if it is a nude wedding, I suppose...and I do not want to picture a ceremony planned by Zevran. Or a marriage between the two of them? Oh, the Maker would curse the world for its sins a second time if such a ceremony would take place, I am sure...

Hahahaha! I forgot about that train wreck. (The game, itself, is awesome but the romances are a train wreck.) I ended up romancing Selene simply by doing a quest. (She showed up in my house later on, all like, "I live here now!") I also ended up watching a cut-scene of lipstick lesbian sex between my Arisen and the dutchess. This was caused by doing her rescue quest. I wasn't upset - I laughed. It was hilarious.

Also Quina (whose name always makes me think of quinoa...) ended up in love with me too. All I did was assist her one or two times, and I didn't even give her back that flower she handed off to me. I gave it to Julien. In fact, I was *trying* to romance Julien, which I succeeded post-game, but he was sharing a real tiny, crappy house with me and Selene.

Regrettably, I had to kick Selene out... with a fist to the face. Then I threw her off a roof. It solved the problem. I felt bad. lol

It would take some paragraphs to dig in on the cons, and pros so read pages 46 - 47 here

It's a flawed game that oozes with potential, so get it at a bargain if it's possible.

Dragon's Dogma is very fun. It's hard as hell, but completely worth your time. The romances are stupid and you have absolutely no choice when they occur. They just kind of happen, even if you're uninterested in that aspect of the game (in which case I was uninterested in that aspect of the game. Somehow I ended up being Super Lesbian, so I made up for it by romancing Julien, which was kinda boring...). But the combat is so fun, and the monsters are incredible - you can climb on them just like in Shadow of the Colossus. You have to strike them on certain weak points when you climb up. It's very entertaining.

The world is explorable, but not as huge as say Dark Souls or Skyrim. It's big, and it takes forever to get from A to B because you cannot warp travel. Everything is on foot. (Technically you can warp travel if you pay a lot of coin for a ferry stone. Those allow you to warp, but on to two places: somewhere you plant a port crystal that you receive at some point in the game, and to a major city. One of the two places may change since you can pick up your port crystal and move it wherever you choose. The other place you can travel to is Gran Soren, and that never changes.)

The combat is more fun than in Dark Souls. I found Dark Souls to be boring. I played it through and the "map" (even though there really isn't a map) is huge, but still. You might enjoy Dragon's Dogma. It, like Dark Souls, can also cause you to once in awhile do a RageQuit. lol

I typically romance Zevran, and going by the way his character develops as the relationship progresses, he's a hopeless romantic who is unbelievably in love with the Grey Warden. He (if the dialogue/interaction is done correctly) vaguely proposes marriage to the Warden down the line. If you sacrifice and kill your Warden at the end of DAO, and you also had romanced Zevran, he runs off to Antiva with a broken heart, becomes leader of the Crows, and stringently vows to never love again.

Honestly, I was dumped more times by Alistair than I could remember (like, if you are NOT a human, noble chick with high enough cunning to persuade Alistair at the corner of his every gripe, forget it). Zevran was surprisingly always the more committed one, and I could have seen a wedding between he and the Warden being 100% appropriate.

Agreed, it wouldnot be appropriate for everyone.  Alistair, sure, Leliana probably.  Zevran might agree to it is the Warden insisted, but probably wouldn't take it too seriously.  Morrigan would just laugh at you.

Merrill might be amenable, though would probably want a dalish ceremony.  Isabela, no way.  Fenris might be agreeable but wouldn't want a big deal made.  Sebastian, well, we already know the answer to that.

But that's part of it.  SUch a ceremony, or broaching the subject of one, would help differentiate teh romances more.  Not to mention the scandal that could be caused if such a thing occured.  The Amell heir taking an elven lover causes a stir in Hightown?  How about marrying one?

Really? Hm...never really got one of my chars into a relation with Zevran. In fact, I never really took him with me on quests, when I now think about it...hmm...so I stand corrected and shouldn't judge a book by its cover, even when the cover seems rather sticky...

And yes, Alistair...how mad it made me when he dumped my warden for stupid reasons like "the kingdom" and heirs and such...I had to quit for some days, browse the Dragon wikis and reload and replay several hours to get him "hardened"...now that sounds a little sticky too...

I shouldn't get involved in such topics on friday nights...

The only type of marriage I see happening. Is the kind that starts with me being drunk out of my mind and ending with me running.

If you play on the PC, there's a mod that lets you marry Zev.  And I agree, he's surprisingly wonderful to romance.

That's to be expected. In general, Zevran is a very passionate character. He also reminds me alot of Antonio Banderas, given the style of voice-acting and that the way you pick him up is so reminiscent of Puss in Boots from Shrek 2.
