I've just finished my first play through of mass effect from game one ( yeah I know I'm a bit late to the party but hey ho). I knew there was some controversy about the ending so I approached it with some caution but wow, I loved it. I've never had a game make me cry before. But this one did I'm not afraid to admit it. 

As I've been avoiding all info about the 'horrible' ending I'm not sure what the main complaints are. Shepard saves the universe from complete destruction. brilliant.

Maybe it helped that I played leviathan before seeing the end? And I'm not sure what the extended cut added but I am sure there was no need for the stuck on pictures at the end.

Thankyou Bioware for my most favourite series of games I have ever played (including mario from back in the day)? I shall now crack on with the multiplayer and I look forward to Omega.

Look up the original ending on YouTube, EC also had dialogue and extra cinematics.

I would say levi and EC helped, but I think you wouldn't have hated the ending before.

In the original endings, the relays are destroyed and the Normandy crashed and burned on that planet, leaving the crew stranded. You also got no slides, so for all you knew everyone on the Citadel was dead, too. You also didn't see the Normandy pickup your squad at the beam, so everyone was confused when they were suddenly fleeing the battle with Joker (and they were confused because it was only until the EC that we see Hackett give the retreat order)

Trust me, the EC helped this ending a lot. Glad you enjoyed it.

Yea I spent the last two weeks playing the entire series (Amazon sales, whoop!) and it was the most emotionally taxing experience. During the suicide mission my heart rate rised, I slightly sweated because I was scared my crew might die (they didn't! NOLB!) and the conclusion with 3 was well executed. I found the romancing aspect to be one of the most enjoyable experiences because when crap hits the fan, who do you lean on for support. For me it was Miranda. After Ash left me high and dry, Miranda made the bleakness of ME2 more bare able. Too bad she wasn't included more in 3 :-T But the overall experience (even with the EC ending) I thought this has been the greatest media experience in my life.

I just told him he might want to see the difrence, and I like the endings so...

That was in reference to OP saying he wasn't sure why what the EC added. But sure attack first, read context later.

Wow, you've missed a good party, bro. All the people who disliked the ending being called "haters" right away, all those who liked it being called "drones", all the fightings and debates, all the quotes and sarcasm... Not sure how much fun you could have on BSN without that.

EC added everything after the scene of your crew crashing on that planet, apart from the scene with the snow world planet of the adult and kid.
It also added the scene where your help crew escape on the run down to the teleportation device.

I would recommend not thinking about the plot too much but you seem noobish enough so you probably don't care about plots and plot holes.

I think it's more that he stated he's not sure what the EC added. At least, that's what I addressed in my post.

OP, basically the Original Endings, the Catalyst doesn't make any sense, he just vaguely explains the 3 choices, you choose one and then you get a colorful light show. The Extended Cut changed the entire Catalyst conversation(it explains everything)....there's no memorial wall scene in the original endings, there's no ending cinematics. The Extended Cut added all of those things, so YES it was absolutely necessary


And I agree with you....it was beautiful, amazing, and emotional. I loved it (hated the original endings)

Unless you played with no Leviathan and no EC, you didn't play the original game. And the original was almost universally panned. Your first playthrough wasn't of the game, but the re-edited version which retroactively foreshadowed problem plot points. You should have played the game as it exists on disk, and then if you liked it your opinion would have more clout.
