That doesn't preclude a female qunari from being a major NPC, you know. Perhaps not a companion, but easily a prominent NPC that performs an advisory or logistic role for the main character. Female Qunari are not soldiers. But they can still fight. if necessary. Tallis, for example, was part of the Ben-Hassrath. Technically a priest, but still served as an assassin and thus, a trained fighter.
From there, not only companions need be romanceable. In fact, romanceable NPC's who aren't companions would be a welcome change from the typical BioWare narrative boilerplate. A qunari NPC would be fertile ground for a romance option, for how qunari view sexuality and companionship. Romance options needn't require sex scenes, or sexual activity between characters, to be valid or acceptable. It would be nice to see an exploration of platonic love in the course of an RPG for once.
