Would never want that. That would make rival even more ridiculous and pointless. Rival should be compelling, not sadistic just because.

As long as they don't do that thing in Game of Thrones...with the rat...and the bucket.

One of the main reasons for GoT's success is its realism. It puts the Medieval in Going Medieval.

So if Bioware does intend to tackle such a dark and mature theme in DA3, I hope that they do so in such a way as to help everyone feel as deeply affected by that experience as I was by that exhibition in Spain. It would be service to humanity if they do.

I know the op was kidding around. I normally like to kid along with the best of them. But, in this case, I was thinking of posting my ....thoughts.... on the subject anyways. Sorry if i'm being a killjoy.

Oh I'm serious about including realistic torture scenes (but I also think everything should have some humor in it). For the same reasons that you have mentioned. Dragon Age has always been Dark Fantasy for me, with many of its aspects quite blatant allegories of RL Medieval Europe. I'm sure they didn't build up this whole religious conflict in DA2 just to end it with rainbows and butterflies.

Sure, I think this would be a good thing to put in on the "evil" track, if your character is the inquisitor. Lots of games have "torture" in them; it all depends how its implemented. Usually it's some kind of electric shock or beating, and not excruciatingly detailed torture porn. I don't see why this couldn't be in the game. In fact, I'm guessing it probably already is.

I agree. It's kind of an obvious thing to include. I just wish they look more to Monty Python or Tarantino for pointers.

Of course. For some reason my mind skipped a beat and decided the OP wanted to go all Hostel on people.

Oh no. Pointless violence is pointless. Many of these so called "horror" movies end up being technical inspection trips into meat factories or garbage recycling plants. It would be a tedious exercise.

First of all this has nothing to do with the Friend-Rival system, which I'm not even sure will return in DA3.

Secondly I'm obviously not advocating torturing your companions. Even Spanish Inquisitors did not customarily torture their fellow Inquisitors or collaborators. Because it would not make sense.

Why is the guy - on what we perceive to be the left, but is actually on the right - wearing an aviator's hat? I don't think the Spanish Inquisition ever had people wear those. Also, I suspect they weren't even invented until AFTER the Spanish Inquisition.

When i was in Toledo Spain I visited an exhibition regarding the Inquisition, and as part of my travels I even visited the palace that was the headquarters of the Inquisition near Madrid.

Let me just say that the exhibition in Toledo had a very profound impact on me. There's something powerful and utterly revolting in seeing the actual implements of torture alongside models depocting how they were used, up close and within reach. Something about it really made me cognizant of how these events were horrifyingly real, and unimaginably evil, and were done to real people with hopes, dreams, and feelings just like I have. Just like you have.

And the ability of humanity to descend to the uttermost depths of evil in the name of belief or ideology should never, ever, be forgotten. Too many people are far too quick to resort to violence and torture even today.

So if Bioware does intend to tackle such a dark and mature theme in DA3, I hope that they do so in such a way as to help everyone feel as deeply affected by that experience as I was by that exhibition in Spain. It would be service to humanity if they do.

To heck with ESRB ratings. I'm sick of games pandering to these committees. The game should be as realistic as possible. So, if torture scenes are appropriate, add them in. I'm not saying going ballistic on violence, but having realistic scenes (i.e., what would happen in the real world if such a situation was present) that may be gory is better than having just the pixellated blood spatters, monster decapitations which are, in many ways, just for fun. Killing an ogre or darkspawn and letting their guts splatter many metres is just for show. That's what makes violence "accepted" and why we don't bat an eye when that happens. I think that's more harmful than having an emotionally gruesome scene where it does make you think, what would lead a human being to do that? Why would parts of society condone this type of torture? How can people think this is fun? Etc., etc. Anyway, I've gone a bit off-topic here. But what I'm saying is don't "hide" serious stuff for the purpose of ESRB ratings, but then do something identical or worse just because it's okay if it's not human (killing for "fun").

I've just gotten into a new DA2 playthrough and I find it funny how scenes where Hawke has to kill characters in dialogue scenes, you never see it and it's just assumed she/he stabs them. Then when combat scenes come up the darkspawn's or human enemy's torso just explodes off the body with one swing of the blade. Yeah, so if it talks, it's not okay to kill it but if you never talked to it it's okay.
