If BioWare manage to pull of a truly branching storyline, THAT would be awesome.

Imagine if your quests were completely different in the second playthrough because you made a major decision to side with somebody, or your loyalty to another companion wasn't strong enough?

That'd be amazing.

Edit: You could easily pull it off like they used the warden as background history in DA2, its all about removing the next game from the previous one. Not one single narrative, but each game being a new area etc.

Please do this BioWare :)

Witcher 2 did it:

That sounds amazing, but how would it work with imports? I imagine that that many variables being imported into the next game (assuming there IS a next game, I suppose) sounds like it'd be difficult.

And if that's the case, I personally would rather have my specific choices imported, even if it meant a dip in complexity.

Then again, I'm certainly not an expert. Maybe it wouldn't be as big of an issue as I'm making it out to be.

One thing about a branching storyline is it becomes too complex as the story keeps branching. Also keep in mind that they are carrying choices from 2 games and some if these choices are not even binary. It gets a bit tricky but doable In the sense of difficulty. Another factor is maker look at the resources

Although truly branching story lines are great for replay value, they're a real female dog when trying to write a sequel. In order to maintain a coherent narrative from game to game you unfortunately have no choice but to keep the number of possible outcomes to a minimum.

Masseffect couldn't pull it off so I doubt Dragon age will be any different, not possible to do that and maintain profit margins... Maybe if they had hiro from heroes to keep track of their storyboards and plot branches.

Unfortunately we are stuck with the illusion of choice.

This is why I wish Bioware would do something like the Elder Scrolls or Final Fantasy, basicly a game series that are not true sequels to the game that came before but do share a common world or common themes, this way we can get a game that has multiple endings and establishes itself as a well known franchise.

No.

If they got rid of imports, that problem would solve itself.

With only a 2 year development cycle, or that's what Bioware says anyway, I doubt that,

As i play thru way of the samurai 4 for the 100th time which is nothing but branching story paths based entirely on choices i make, i look over at DA2 and my eye twitches in rage

So yes, this would be a lovely change for a company who likes to dangle choice matters on a string and yanks it back the second a legitimate, relevant choice is proposed

I actually do not like Branching Stroyline because it would force me to play the game twice or so to see all the contents. I want DAO's style in which we have choices along a single storyline.

A branching storyline effectively halves the length of the game, and the content the player gets in a playthrough.

While i understand why people like them, i am not such a big fan. I prefer many small differences to fewer larger ones.

I don't want them to make three games in one, but I'm not fond of replacement clones either. Please no vengeful mage called Sanders if we killed Anders in DA2.

I'd settle for more noticeable consequences rather than completely different acts like in TW2. I don't mind a shorter game, in fact I'd like it shorter. Mass Effect 1 takes me 20 hours to beat with the completionist achievement, I like it that way.

Something related I'm concerned about is taking away choices for drama. I remember a dev saying they implemented a choice in DA:O and everybody chose the least dramatic one because nobody died and players considered it a victory... so in DA2 they removed the choices and had you going along one single predetermined path to witness your mom's death because then it's more dramatic. I understand the "it's the story we wanted to tell" point, but please try to make a game we'd like to play too.

Yes please. The feel of having an impact on the world is something I really appreciate in a RPG.

^ to those who say it can't be done, it can, you just have to set each new game as distanced from the previous one.

It would be cool if you could choose who you side with from the start - Mage or templar - And whoever you choose affects the whole story

A branching storyline is truly how our choices should be in the game. Bioware could just limit the amount of meaningful choices in the game cause otherwise the storyline tree would be like 500 metres long :/.

I love this idea. It would make for replaying as a different character, that much more interesting and engaging. Not to mention, less predictable, which bothers me a little bit in DA:O and DAII, where I know what's coming.
