Star Wars is about the struggle between good and evil, which makes it easy to add new stories.

The only good prequel I can think of that really stands out is Deus Ex HR (incredible game)

Actually the Mass Effect story is about a future galaxy where mankind and other alien species live side by side, the Reapers just happen to be the primary conflict. Without the Reapers you still have a whole galaxy of people and possibilities.CaFé87 wrote...
I do not see a problem with prequels in general. But the Mass Effect Story is about Reapers, while playing a C-Sex Officer or Krogan during the rebellions might be fun it would not feel like Mass Effect in my opinion.

That's like saying Star Wars was about the Rebels fighting the Emperor and it won't be interesting to follow anyone else's story besides the ones from the movies.

I believe most have been mentioned, but the following games are also good:
- Lufia 2
- FF7: Crisis Core
- Metal Gear Solid 3 (arguably the best of all the MGS games)
- Metroid Prime
- KOTOR
Patriot Games is a prequel to the Hunt for Red October, I enjoyed that one. I also didn't mind Red Dragon or Hannibal Rising (prequels to Silence of the Lambs), and Spartacus:Gods of the Arena was a decent prequel series to Spartacus:Blood and Sand on Starz.
Godfather Part II is one of the best movies of all-time, and a significant chunk of the movie is prequel (though most of it is sequel).

I'll admit KOTOR was great, I haven't played any of the others. Don't have MGS because I don't have play stationBlitzhawk65 wrote...

you can probably get a PS2 for about $20 off of ebay or Craigslist and it can also play PS1 games (just find a PS1 memory card). Definitely worth it to check out MGS 1-4, FF7, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Xenosaga 1-3, and Suikoden 1-5 among others.
Some of those games will cost you a pretty penny on ebay, but the trick is that you can sell them back for the same price or more once you are done playing them.

I was curious because I'd rather get the PS3 so I could play Heavy Rain and Uncharted.

The Hobbit was published before LotR.
Ever read "Narnia: The Magicians Nephew"? It was a good book, but it was a PREQUEl, to the lion the witch and the wardrobe
TMN was a terrible book.

1, it can't over shadow what came before, so the scope will aways be limited.
2. This franchise is in the unenviable scenario where it's plot based, so anything they do is a retcon or heavily scripted.
3. Another bad situation was ending of Mass Effect 3 makes anything they do pointless.

LotR doesn't ruin the Hobbit story, because in the end of the LotR life goes on. Moreover only the oblivious non-reading part of the society would claim that the Hobbit is a prequel. Read the books, damn it!!

Halo: Reach- Great game, but it caused quite the ****storm. Broke a lot of canon, or at the very least, screwed everything up in such a nice way. The tagline "From the beginning, you know the end" or something like that? Not a good idea.
The Wheel of Time: New Spring- Not a bad book, but in all honesty the story was just dull, and we already knew that the two characters of it would still be alive as they were well and going in the main story... Not to mention all the hints as to what the story was, well before it was written.
As many people said, we already know what happens, so it just isn't as exciting as a new story.

Actually, while Halo: Reach did retcon a bit of prior lore, I remember seeing some praise for the "new" canon. Largely because Fall of Reach wasn't that great a book. And if I'm not mistaken, the tagline for the game was supposed to be more a play on the campaign having a darker tone than it being a prequel.
