I really don't want my PC to run around like Rapunzel (that would be highly unpractical in combat... although... the way she wields her hair... no, not going this way), but what I miss in DA is the (almost) lack of hairstyles for long hair. The hairstyles in DA:O were good (awesome from the various modders <3 thank you very much!), but only two (I think) for long hair and hairstyles in DA2 were... well... rushed?

So please, I'd like to see more kinds of buns and such in DA3 (along with overall more customization options as I wrote earlier in this toipc.) And realistic look would be nice too. :)

Long hair that looks good is something I've wanted in games for ages, especially in BioWare games.... I hope they can and will implement it for this game. I'm pretty tired of ugly plastic hair.... :<

As most likely the first male to post a reply to this thread. I'd like to say "yes" to long female hairstyles in Dragon Age 3.

The cost of getting long hair to look right (no clipping) on a PC you can dress up in whatever you want is like... huge. With multiple hairstyles, you'd have to test each style with each outfit to reduce the amount of clipping AND make sure all of the hair behaves with every animation etc etc and it's a nightmare. So I'm OK with shorter hairstyles.

I would like to see more natural looking ponytails/updos though, with bones/physics so they sway. Pretty please!

I'm totally ok with shorter hairstyles for those reasons.  Most times I've seen long hairstyles in a game, they end up looking like barbie or porno hair and I don't use it.

^^Double this.  I just want a ponytail.  A simple, no frills pony tail.  One that is more than .754 inches long and does not end in a whimsical curly cue.  WHY IS THIS SO MUCH TO ASK?!?!!?

I think it would be best if they could figure out a cheap way to do long hair with no clipping. That way we can have epic Merlin beards, instead of those sad little things like in my avatar.

Epic Merlin beards.... <3

I'm optimistic about the new engine...
Maybe we can mess around with beard length? That would be cool... MOAAAAR SLIDERS! hehe
Let's wait and see... ^_^

Unfortunately there isn't any way to do that when you can dress up your character in whatever you want. In characters with static outfits, like miranda, they just modeled the hair to look as if it was resting against her shoulders and adjusted the weighting so it would deform when her head turns.

Epic Merlin beards would have a similar problem :(

I know, it's devastating :(

More power to them if they want to include more technically challenging hairstyles but imo it's a lot of work for little payoff.

You're probably right. And I won't begrudge them for not including such things. I don't hold this against Bioware.

That doesn't mean it makes me happy, though.

If it weren't for the fact that you get clipping even with the short hair, I'd agree. I've got dozens of screenshots where pieces of Hawke's scalp, neck, and forehead were sticking through his hair.

I'd credit that to the sped up development.

The difference with long hair is the need for physics + collision detection. It's a different process. With Hawke's hair (I assume) the hair was modeled in place and happens to clip in some animations. With long hair + physics unless you tell it how to behave it will go where it wants and lay how it will. I was looking at Geralt's hair in TW2 and even for that straightforward hairstyle it's very stiff and clips thorugh his trapezius and is generally kinda weird.

Short hair = model it so it doesn't clip.
Long hair = model it, rig it, and spend hours and hours testing and weighting and tweaking to make sure it not only doesn't clip but also behaves like hair.

Modders manage, but I cheerfully accept that modders have time that professional developers don't. They can spend six weeks on one hairstyle, if they feel strongly about it, and if it clips, nobody is going to get excited about it because it's a mod and it had a warning label on the box.

Still, remember the old DA2 splice thread? Some of that was kinda funny. I think I posted one with Dog's nose poking out through Hawke's crotch.

I can do without long hair. It would be really unpractical for someone who has to fight through hordes of enemies every five minutes.

I'd welcome better-looking short hair though. I liked default FHawke's hair, but that wasn't available for custom Hawkes. :/
And I really want a good-looking ponytail. Doesn't have to be long or anything, just...not looking stupid. Kind of like Morrigan's hair, just with a traditional ponytail in the back.

Mmm, I'm of two minds. If it can be done well in the engine, fine. But TBH none of BioWare's games so far make long-ish hair look decent, even when modded. Even Miranda and ME3 Ash's hair, which is only shoulder-length, has a distinct plastic look.

Until then, I'm down for ponytails/buns to imply longer hair.

haha, I'd actually like to second this from a dude's perspective. I play both genders in these games, and longer hair is generally more attractive. Unless you're playing one of these games however...while it'd be ok to see a longer style, it would also be ok for the longer hair to not look like various types of pasta glued to a straw wig that has been stapled on someone's head.

They made an improvement with the little bit of movement hair had in DA2, hopefully with the new engine we'll continue to see improvment. And not just on hair, but also on the way material moves.
