Am I the only one who thinks that his "character development" seemed more like a giant retcon? I get that his reactions may be more extreme because had just ended in DAO, but I remember getting an epilogue slide in which Cullen takes over Greagoir's job when Greagoir has to step down due to old age. He rules with fear and is very mistrustful of the mages, as I recall. The wiki doesn't quote the slide but says this:

Cullen might go insane after Uldred's attempt to overthrow the circle, resulting in him slaying several mages before escaping the tower. He becomes a wandering madman, hunting mages wherever he can. He may alternatively replace Greagor as Knight-Commander, watching over the Circle using fear.

Apparently Cullen can also go completely insane. Anybody had that happen? I assume he is suddenly very sane again in DA2 when you import that.

I've heard that this happens though I've never gotten the slide myself in over a dozen playthroughs.  Considering the slide I got for Anders from Awakenings says "He went back to the Circle to give a lecture on the Architect, came back, left the wardens briefly before returning to remain with them ever after"...Image IPByea...slides don't mean diddly squat.  So Anders in DA2 is one giant retcon as well.  And Leliana can turn up in Kirkwall as the hand of the Divine, even for those who lopped off her head in Origins (though I never did).

I prefer to think of ending slides as 'tying up loose ends if someone never ever plays DA or its sequels ever again'.  Maybe it's even 'rumors of such' you hear.  I understand in WH, you can overhear apprentices talking and someone mentions Cullen being sent out to the country "for a rest", but I've never heard it personally.

Cullen is a devout, dedicated soldier of the Maker undergoing a deep spiritual crisis of faith. A man who has good reason to hate and fear mages (DA:O) but who also has seen the dark side of his religion and its consequences (DA:2). What will his final emotional and psychological outcome be?

That is good drama. I would love to see him reach some sort of moral, spritual and emotional synthesis. In a way, is a a symbol for the good people of this world who are trying to deal with the mage issue in a good and honest way.

I'd also like to add that I find his character model incredibly attractive and was probably one of the only reoccuring characters to actually improve physically between DA:O and DA2. I mean, come on, look at this face:

(reluctant snip)

But anyway, the interesting thing about Cullen, is that he's had a lot of character growth and development over the course of two games, which we've actually witnessed with our own eyes rather than just being told about it. In DA:O in the mage origin (particularly if you play as a female) he is incredibly naive, innocent and a mage sympathiser, but after his torture later in the game he becomes a very scared, bitter and tormented young man.

By DA2 he's leveled out a bit, but when we first meet him again he's still suffering from PTSD and has become a bit of a zealot due to circumstance. However, over the course of 10 years in Kirkwall you'll notice that he begins to realise that his outlook is wrong and extreme, to the extent where he even begins to question Meredith. Finally, at the end of Act 3 he directly ignores orders from his superior to protect Hawke (and protect a group of mages to, if you run a pro-Templar play through) and aids him/her in killing the Knight-Commander.

From a personality stand point, we know little about him, but that's what makes him so intriguing because his personality is a blank enough slate to go in any direction, yet interesting enough to have captured fans attention. Hell, the poor boy has gone from one bad experience after another, got promoted through the ranks of the Kirkwall Templar Order too fast, to the extent that he had to take on ridiculous amounts of responsibility that he was unfamiliar with - not to mention he's Ferelden, so likely got a lot of flack from the native Templars of Kirkwall who weren't keen on taking orders from a dog lord.

Finally, there's the small matter of his PTSD that has likely increased since the events of DA2. Adding to his head mess is the whole Mage/Templar war, with the bulk of the Templars rebelling from the Chantry. Does he stay loyal to the Divine? Or join the rebels in Mage hunting?

Basically, he's a very interesting character.

Sorta somewhat this, though I'm not going to make character predictions yet. Some might have missed it, and that's something I don't persoanlly understand, but Cullen HAS had character development and he has matured over the two games. It's something that has interested me and attracted me to his character.

He has the potential to be the voice that knows BOTH Templar and Mage side, and the Templar that understands there needs to be a middle ground instead of an extreme either way. Anders might not like compromises, but when it comes to this... I think there NEEDS to be a compromise and middle ground. Completely free mages wouldn't work for a number of reasons, just as prisoned mages don't work. Obivously Hogwarts is the answer.

I don't know either. I simply never paid him attention. Maybe I should.
But then I dislike Merril.
And dislike Isabela.
I fiercely hate EDI (i know different game)
And love and fully support Anders terrorism.
I like Aveline more than I ever liked Leliana or Morrigan.
It´s just people and their opinions. Opinions differ.

He's cute and I'm shallow.  :D

Also he's interesting.  He went from moderate to extreme in DAO and in DA2 while he seemed firm in his beliefs he still behaved mercifully when given the opportunity.  In short he seems like a decent person trying to do his best and having to confront some pretty extreme circumstances.  If DA3 is about mages and templars then I think he'd be a pretty good choice for templar companion.

..........but mostly because in DA2 he was pretty.

I'm not such a huge Cullen fan, but he is a character, who was in most (ingame) events leading to the mage/templar conflict, so he would be a good choice as a companion or bigger NPC in DA3.
He is a hardliner and since I'm mostly pro mage (I can't side with Meredith, it's just impossible),  I tend to argue with him a lot in the Gallows :-) - that's kind of fun. I don't find him very attractive (but then, I never got the 'charms' of Alistair or Fenris either),
Personally, I'd like to see my favorite templars from DAO again: Gregaoir and Ser Bryant. But I'm reasonable enough to see, that Cullen is the better choice
