Just bought and installed ME1 on my Windows 7 (64) PC laptop. After installing and restarting, I get this error message every time I click "Play" on the Mass Effect opening menu screen:

"Mass Effect configuration utility has stopped working."
"A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

What might be going on, and how might I fix it?

The techy types might need more info than that. If I were you I'd repost in the ME1 tech support forum (here) with your computer's full specs.

You need to download patch 1.02

This is the ME2 forum, not for ME-1 questions, and that question has already been asked and answered very frequently, so is easily found and fixed, as long as you ignore the badly broken on-site thread search function, and use either Google or Yahoo.
