I just started playing single player again and I'm using a adept and bascially power spamming. I was curious as to how smgs and heavy pistols are in single player. I know in multiplayer generally a heavy pistol is idea for most situations and that if you use a smg it better be either the hurricane, hornet, or the tempest. I was curious if any of you guys use your heavy pistols as your main weapon and use the smg of your choice as a sidearm in single player?
I'm thinking of using my Phalanx more over my Hornet while my powers recharge since I'm spamming powers mostly. Also how do they fare once the difficulty is raised? I've been playing on normal and I have found that I'm cutting through Atlas mechs really fast so a raising of the difficulty is in order for me at least.
Also if you do reccomend heavy pistols over smgs as a primary weapon would you reccomend the same for smg/hp squaddies? (Liara and EDI)

I prefer something a bit heavier and with more punch even on casters, so I usually go with an AR or sniper and an SMG secondary. If you have them at high enough levels you can easily get 200% cooldowns.
The Phalanx is quite capable, however, and is a good choice if you're not playing one of the higher difficulties like Insanity. It can't keep up on Insanity, for that I recommend the Carnifex or Paladin.
As for squadmates, I give Liara an SMG since she has Warp Ammo and automatics have a higher chance to apply the power, but with EDI I make her heavy pistol her primary since they generally pack more punch than SMGs.

Hmmm I wasn't accounting for the ammo with Liara. Good catch. How do the smgs stack in single player difficulties? I had little trouble wiping out a brute using a Punisher smg I was curious how the it and the other smgs would do on the higher difficulties.

It depends on the class. Soldier and Vanguard can take advantage of Incendiary Explosive Burst ammo which increases the damage substantially.Black_Vanguard wrote...

As a caster I prefer something a little punchier, just as Zombie said. That said your powers will be the bulk of your damage output, and really the Punisher is a good choice. Pair it will a shotgun or a pistol and go to town.

Heavy Pistols, yes. Very much yes.
SMGs in the single player, for Shepard? Carry anything else, if you're planning on using it, or slap Lightweight Materials on one and forget about it.

The Punisher has more raw dps than any other SP weapon in the game, other than the Reegar. You'll be fine with it.
