Hello.......

I kind of need some assistance/advice. I started playing a human mage in DAO and had never done so before. (I'm seriously a rogue at heart.) Anyway, what's the best armor and weapon a Grey Warden's money can buy? hehe. My girl seems to be dying a bit too easily. I try to maintain my distance and cast spells, but you know how enemies like to rampage toward you from time to time. Any tactics advice? Should I have one of my companions helicopter me?

My mage mostly casts offensive spells, but she does have the ability to heal.

What are the best sustained abilities to keep her protected?

Also, which attributes (aside from magic - the obvious) should I pump up the most and why? Should I focus a lot on willpower or instead do constitution? Would higher strength even make a lick of difference?

When I played a rogue, I pretty much pumped everything up except for magic. As a mage, all the tables have completely turned. I'm a bit topsy turvy and just need a little friendly advice.

What specializations are you taking; are you a blood mage?

A few things that may help:

1) Set your tank to use abilities like taunt, threaten. warcry, holy smite, etc. to keep aggro off your warden.

2) Cast 'glyph of repulsion' on yourself to keep stragglers at bay. Mind blast is another option to clear all threats. 'Waking Nightmare' though is a AOE spell, will not draw any threat towards the caster.

3) Cast heroic aura on yourself if archers are targetting you. If you need even more defense, cast glyph of warding, heroic defense on yourself. Then you have arcane shield, rock armor. But with good tanking, these are hardly needed.

4) You may find the 'Reaper's vestments' better for survival than the 'vestments of the seer'. It's all a matter of perspective, and the type of mage you are playing.

5) I'd say don't waste attribute points on anything other than magic and willpower, or magic and constitution for a blood mage.

6) The staff combo of 'Staff of the Magister Lord' and 'Magister's staff' is arguably the best in Origins.

7) While stacking " + X % damage" gear, keep in mind the cap is 30% in origins.

I have not settled on a specialization yet. I just started the game and was going to ask if anything is recommended? I was curious about arcane warrior, but I also made a "deal with the devil" lol and she (the desire demon) promised to teach me to be a blood mage.

You can be both an arcane warrior and a blood mage. It's considered by many to be the most powerful magic combo. After all, who wouldn't want a nice armour shell when you are bleeding?

Wade's Superior Dragonscale will cost a total of twenty sovereigns. If you buy Evon the Great's from Harren and have Wade make the heavy set, then that's supposed to be really good for mages. The Fade Wall is an excellent shield for mages.

The game treats stamina as mana if you are a mage. So if an item increases stamina, then it also increases mana.

Spellweaver(? the sword you get in Haven) is the single best arcane warrior item and it is free.

As mousetalker mentioned, 'blood mage' and 'arcane warrior' complement each other very well. So, you may want to take that route if you like.
For such a build, you might want to invest a liitle bit in willpower for your sustainables, and a little in constitution. In my opinion, you won't need to invest too much in constitution if you equip 'Lifegiver', and all other attribute boosting gears. You should also equip any one item that 'improves blood magic'. Magic is as usual, quintessential.

You may continue casting with a staff or equip melee weapons as mousetalker has already suggested.

Well in DAO heavy armor attracts attention. I have my mages in lighter armor than my Warriors because of that.

I love mind blast. And I recently found myself a fan of Sleep and Horror for the silly reason of seeing those animated "Z's" floating above those darkspawn.
Also I set my tank to "aggressive". the only problem is if I don't pay attention, he tends to run off chasing some darkspawn, which leads him into a ambush.

I prefer to go arcane warrior at lv 7, and so my mage wardens are usually durable, despite their mage health. As long as you have a tank in the party, you shouldn't have to worry too much about hate. Just don't be too wreckless. Either have the tank use taunt when an ally is being attacked by a melee attack or when an ally's health drops below 90%. Since I don't want the tank using taunt when an ally is being attacked, but not taking any damage, I usually wait until their health drops below 90%.

As for sustainables, I'd go with rock armor and arcane shield. If you're playing as an arcane warrior who uses melee weapons, then obviously you want combat magic active, as well as miasma.

I set my tank to default and have them always attack the same enemy as my warden. If, for some reason, they run off to where they might possibly trigger an ambush, I just pause the game and tell them to attack the correct target. If your tank still gets into trouble, if you happen to blink or sneeze, just put them on defensive behavior. I just prefer default, so they don't stand there when their current target dies.

I usually go with spirit healer as a secondary spec. I rarely used the blood mage talents when I picked up that spec in the past, and I really like group heal.

My arcane warrior wardens are a mix of melee dps, crowd control and backup healing. I like playing as a flexible character who can adapt to any given situation, especially when some questlines force a companion into the party, thus making me remove a more favored companion, or when sh*t hits the fan and my warden needs to shift from offense to just keeping everyone alive and getting the battle under control.

For armor, I just go with the best available after the tank gets taken care of. If you have it, Battledress of the Provocateur is nice for an arcane warrior up till Wade's Superior Dragonscale armor, with Evon the Great's Mail. If playing Awakening, I also like Venture, Fleet Feet and Stormchaser Gauntlets.

As for stats, you could go all magic if you prefer staves. Since I like to dual wield daggers with my arcane warrior, I go with 30 dexterity and the rest into magic. You'll want some dexterity to have a decent attack rating, and with the dexterity, daggers are a good option. Since a mage doesn't get access to any of the weapon+shield talents, they might as well just dual wield to pick up more offense. If you prefer to sit back and throw nukes, then go all magic and use mana/stamina regeneration equipment and lyrium potions to maintain mana without needing too much, if any, willpower.

If you prefer to throw nukes, forget stamina/mana regen. You have lyrium potions for that. Focus on raising your defense or dodge.

All a mage needs is Arcane Shield and Rock Armor. If you're geared up for defense or dodge, you do not need Arcane Warrior to become near immortal. Just get Heal, perhaps Group Heal and Force Field. Blood Mage is unnecessary unless you decide to stock up on CC, the game already gives you more than enough nukes in Flame Blast, Cone of Cold, Shock and Fireball, not to mention the persistent AoE spells. Blood Mage also nerfs your healing from poultices - it complements Arcane Warrior well, but there's no point in gimping your healing if you skip AW.
Even a mage with no specializations can be near immortal with ~40% dodge from items and spell resistance from gear, with Arcane Shield, Rock Armor, healing spells, poultices, and a few situation-specific spells. For early game, you'll be suprised how much effective stacking +defense gear can be if you stack enough and ultimately see your mage outlive your tanker (unless it's nightmare, in which case friendly fire is a big hazard). You will still die from grab and overwhelm attacks though unless you're prepared with the right spec/spells.

Simple, get blizzard, tempest and spell might asap. make sure you have enough will power to cast both blizzard and tempest with spell might on. Viola! The most OP spell combination in the game with a almost full screen aoe and high damage, you basically massacre hordes of mobs without even moving at all. Its called storm of the century...

Depends on what DLC you got, and depend on if you have unlocked Arcane warrior yet or not.
Assuming you have Blood armor from start, and assuming you will get warden commander boots,
and assuming you want to play Arcane warrior,
-then i suggest following
At start, select rock armor & spell shield,
then max out magic and nothing else until you have 42 magic,
in the mean time pick spell wisp, max out Arcane line until mastery.
At lv 7, select Arcane warrior, dress in Blood armor, and start pumping up dexterity until you can dual wield a good sword with the edge dagger, or any other good dagger,
and get flaming weapons skill,
also start maxing out mana alteration until you get mana clash.
You will stack spell wisp + spell might before you fire up flaming weapons, -after that you can deactivate them.
Continue max out magic, and pick Blood magic at lv 14, and max out that line too. (and obviously max out AW line)
Finally add a few points in constitution, make 30 dexterity, and get the last useful skill,
telekinetic weapons, for High dragon & such, and get even more magic, at least 70 base.

Save right before Ignacio, and pray he drop Ignacio's dagger when you slay him.
The reason you want Blood armor & warden commander boots is they have both a large mana pool,
so you dont need to spend points in willpower, Spellward amulet also has willpower.
Gloves of diligence has the highest armor of any gloves,
Lifegiver & key to the city rings, along with andruils blessing belt is a given choise.

The only non sustainable spell that makes a difference is mana clash,
since mages is the only thing that can hurt you, but only if you dragged on and didnt kill the mage before mana shield deactivated due to empty mana, so keep shimmering & spell shield on, and preferably fry them mages with mana clash, and a single point in survival is helpful, so you can spot them through walls (and manaclash them)

Location
Blood armor included at start
Spellward at Bodhan merchant in camp
Executioners helm in redcliffe with luck, has extra mana
Andruils blessing at the mage tower entrance merchant
Lifegiver in orzammar commons merchant
Spellweaver sword in Haven caverns on the way to the mountain, on a high lv mage
warden commander boots on sophia warden
Ignacio's dagger on Ignacio, duh
Helm of honnleath on a kitten
Key to city ring in orzammar assembly
Gloves of diligence in orzammar shaperate
Arcane tombes 2 from Bodahan in camp, first time & 2nd time,
also at mage tower merchant, and in wonder of thedas shop.

On unlocking blood mage, you mustnt kill Jowan, let him free and tell him to help,
and then when talking with Isolde, ask Jowan what he has to say,
you really should make a save now and then from the moment you enter the windmill in redcliffe village
