I recently decided to play through all three Mass Effect games with the same character for the second time, and back when I used to play the original Mass Effect, I had no idea that killing Threshers outside the Mako had more benefits. So, I'm wondering if anyone had any tips for killing them on foot when I finally meet one. This run is as a Vanguard, with Assault Rifles as a bonus talent. Thank you in advance.

The extra for killing a Thresher Maw (actually it's anything at all) applies even if you've reduced its health bar down to the thinnest sliver of red using the Mako's guns, so there's a way where it's almost so easy it's no fun. Drive around until the Thresher Maw appears and then stop the Mako where you are. This is because if you drive away the Maw will go underground again and we want it to stay right where it is. When it spits its acidy venom at the Mako use the jets to hop the whole vehicle over the spit so it passes harmlessly underneath. Thank it for spitting at you with some machine gun fire and a cannon shell in the face. It'll spit again, you jump the Mako again and shoot it some more. Rinse and repeat until it's down to hardly any health, then exit the Mako and quickly finish it off with rifles before it can spit again. Too easy.

Fighting the Threshers is actually easier on foot than in the Mako, if a bit boring. Simply approach the Maw at a distance at which it's too far to hit you with a melee attack, but close enough for it to never hide in the ground, and just keep strafing left or right, while unloading your arsenal at it. That way it'll only spit acid at you and never hit you as long you keep strafing. It might hit your party, and if you're extremely unlucky you can take some splash damage from it hitting the party member closer to you, but it should never be enough to actually kill you. Keep shooting until it goes down.

The reason I think fighting in the Mako is more difficult is because it's harder to keep the Thresher in one place in the Mako, and once it hides underground it can pop up again in a number of places, one of which could be right under the Mako if you're unlucky, sending the vehicle flying. That's very damaging or lethal, so here's the top tip: When the Thresher hides while engaging it in the Mako, slow down and start driving towards the place it popped up before. Keep out of this place however! Just start approaching it whilst keeping out of it. This will usually prompt the Maw to reappear somewhere else, at a relatively safe distance.

Avoided by the jumping on the spot technique. As long as you start on level ground and not one of the little slopes around a Thresher Maw nest the Mako always lands in the same spot, and appanretly this doesn't count as having moved as far as the Maw is concerned. It's no more fun than strafing round the thing on foot but it's quicker when you can knock it's health nearly all the way down with the Mako's guns.  The only real danger is overdoing it and accidentally killing the thing before you get out and finish it on foot.

Oh yeah, that would work. Never used it, actually :) . Another top tip though: Put immersion in the game first, XP later and roleplay your fights! :D Don't fight the Maws on foot - attack it with all the might of the Mako cannon and machinegun, and never mind the XP!   :D

The other thing is that on your radar it will show the Thresher Maw before it pops out from underground. So if you see the red diamond in the center of the radar just drive quickly forward or backward to avoid it.

I prefer shooting it with the Mako, although typically I just drive backwards then forwards to avoid the acid. It is usually a small enough distance that the Maw doesn't actually dive underground. If it does, just pay attention to the radar.

It's also worth noting that if you're on foot, the Thresher Maw's melee range is longer that you might expect! To be safe, get just close enough to see its health bar and no closer. Maybe not even that close.

If you're at high level with good gear (Spectre weapons) then it's faster to kill it on foot, especially if you soften it up with a Warp. Otherwise weakening it with the Mako is faster.

Also, equip your party's armour with mods that reduce chemical damage. A pair of Medical Exoskeleton X's will drastically reduce the damage you take from the Maw's spit.

QFT. Unless you're trying to max levels without cheating and need the extra experience from killing big enemies get behind that Mako cannon's sights and do it the way a sensible Shepard would. :D

Yep climb out of your mako, pop immunity and melee it.  All jokes aside they are fairly easy to circle strafe or if you're playing a class that has bastion stasis, you can just put them in statis repeatedly and keep shooting.

Fight them on a distance with mods that reduce damage against poison. I assume this is playthrough 2?(imported)

Should have some medical exoskeletons.
