Spellswords should definitely be an option. I also like staves, artifacts, trinkets and books. Frankly, I think casting from bare hands is probably my favorite style. I would rather my own hands be my weapon and source of power.

Ethereal magic to create magic bows and arrows or magic swords and such things. That would be a cool skill tree for magic.
Love this! Like the finishing moves in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, only present whenever you wanted - and intentional, not random. Nice!
Getting stabbed with a sword made of magic would just be extra ouch.

New crafting system that allows you to turn your staff into a stick with a nail in it.

I want mages to act like mages and not be swinging around their stick like a giddly baton girl in a marching band. The whacking of foes must stop. That's what maces are for and everyone knows mages don't wield maces. Mages also don't wield halberds but that's what the DA2 staffs look like. Mages should dish out magic only and perhaps have a tiny sword/dagger if they get too close for casting (or run out of mana).
Therefore, NO to sword-staffs. Either staff, wand, magical object or bare hands. Actually, when you think about it, if apostates are fugitives, why are they waving around a big giant stick for all to see? However, if mages are weaponless, they really need some equivalent bling. Their amulets, rings and robes should be magic-infused. Robes should be equally as varied and upgradable (I was disappointed in DAO's lack of enchantable robes). They should have equippable objects that can serve as the weapon upgrades. (e.g., magic glowstone gives 92 damage).

It would be cool if the spell was visibly coming out of a mage's mouth, the words themselves brought to life, compared to Excalibur's "Charm of Making" ... analnathrah, ooth vas bethud, dothyelyenveh (you could actually see mist coming out of Morgana's mouth). It was both creepy and awe-inspiring. If not for normal combat, then for cutscenes!

Combat staves and polearms for those who want melee mages, and wands for those who want to shoot ranged magic basic attacks. Problem solved!

Bring arcane warrior back, let a mage channel spells into the sword rather than through a staff.
