Discovery...
Varric, and friends discover a statue made of red lyrium in an ancient thaig during their deep roads expedition. Bartrand being the stereotypical greedy merchant dwarf guy steals the idol for himself, while trapping Varric and friends in the thaig. Years later Varric follows up on a lead that his brother is back in Kirkwall,  pays him a visit, and soon discovers that the idol is an artifact of doom.

Powers/abilities...
So far the lyrium idol is capable of driving Bartrand insane, despite the fact that his race is resistant to lyrium. Bartrand also mentioned that he can hear the idol singing to him. Aside from insanity the idol granted Meredith the power to give life to statues, flight, super human strength, durability, and agility. When Meredith overused the idol she was transformed into a statue of red lyrium.

Questions?...
Seeing as how a statue/sword made of red lyrium was capable of all the above, what would the Templars/Chantry do with Meredith's body? Besides a one sentence reference in DA3, would the red lyrium be made a major plot point in future installments, novels, or comics?

Discuss how you feel about red lyrium, and it's future(i hope there's one) in the series.

I hope it doesn't have a future. I hope it dies with DA2.

C'mon, do you at least want to know about the ancient/primeval dwarves who created it, and why?(Yeah it was derpy the way Meredith used it, but still.)

It was probably elves.

...and it was probably because the lyrium told them to do it.

If it comes back and its well done I'll give BioWare a grim-faced round of applause. If it never shows up again I'll be happy in pretending it never happened.

Though I'd bet it'll come back. Even blue lyrium drives you mad... not force people to eat lyrium, butcher servants, attempt fratricide, and become a power ranger... but a little off center. So there's a connection between lyrium and madness and dreams and all that which no doubt makes sense to someone at BioWare.

I hope we will learn more about red lyrium , the thaig and what happened to the remain of Meredith.

We don't know what happen to her ...she turned into some statue.Like the red lyrium sucked her dry.

My guess is red lyrium is like blood magic ,it comes from life ( blood is a fuel for magic , i think blood and life are magic/were created by magic)
And blue lyrium just like regular magic comes from the fade.

I guess it's tied up to something bigger , but every time i try to look at the big picture , I get an headache so...I won't.

We've never seen an idol made of blue lyrium. Perhaps "refining" lyrium in this way amplifies its effects? Now, this is grasping for straws, but considering how there's a book called "Lyrium: Voice of the Maker" (a gift for Wynne, I believe) and people say that lyrium sings to them (Shale, I think, and a few others I can't be bothered to remember or look up), maybe it's like this: Blue lyrium "belongs" to the Maker and red lyrium to a different, but decidedly malevolent entity and both can "talk" through the substance.

Or perhaps red lyrium is what naturally happens to blue lyrium as it ages. The primeval thaig is one of the oldest places we ever get to see.

I hope to learn more about it and the Primeval Thaig. Did we ever even learn what that place really was?

We only know what the name implies: that it was an ancient and lost thaig that pre-dated the written historical record of the dwarves. Something terrible happened there and the inhabitants were transformed into the Profane.

I liked the extra storyline of red lyrium and them building on that, but I wasn't sure what to think about the lyrium idol turnin into a giant sword. The sword was something right out of a children's Japanese cartoon show. Another reason why DA2 had more problems than just reused maps.

During a relay of Legacy recently, I noticed in one of the notes left by the dwarves searching for the Tethras heir that they spoke about strange lyrium 'stained with the blood of warriors'... Sounds like red lyrium to me.

That you never learn more about that idol is one of the things that did disappoint me with DA2. Really hoping it's expanded on in DA3, even if it's just through some codex entries.

Considering that Meredith's red lyrium corpse looks a lot like the top piece of the original idol (which looks like it was the top bit of a staff), perhaps the body will be hidden away for study (deep in some lost thaig), only to become a new artifact/item of reverence or power in decades to come. And thus, the cycle will continue.

My Hawke ground it into a fine powder and snorted it all.

A bit like this.

There's a lyrium ring you can give to Justice in DAA that he says sings to him.

I thought its power drained out and blowed up when Lyrium-crazed Meredith got too greedy with the sword.

Eerie...but imagine if Herren has Wade forge red lyrium rings from Meredith's stolen corpse, then gives the rings to the leaders of the races of men, dwarf, kossith,  and elf. Herren has wade forge an all powerful ring that gives dominion over the others leading to the events of DA4 & 5.(If this sounds familiar to you deal with it, and stop hatin on my artistic integrity.)

The thread is mostly speculation for the future of the red lyrium ore the idol is made of,  rather than the idol itseIf.

There was also the Corrupted Lyrium you can stumble across as a crafting resource.

I expect we will hear more about the properties of lyrium in DA3. Not sure how much they will integrate it into the plot though

Well we know its a dwarven thaig, so we should presume dwarven culture and beliefs would normally apply. Dwarves go back to the Stone, but this is an idol. That would lead one to believe that the idol would be of a paragon, but it doesn't look dwarven whatsoever. Why would the dwarves make an idol of something so bizzare? I would conclude that the dwarves did not actually make the statue, and that it is connected to the Black City event in some way(since the first darkspawn invasion occurs immediately after loss of contact with the thaig).

This opens up the possibility of the lyrium possibly being from the Fade. The Tevinters violated the Cardinal law of physical bodies entering the Fade, so its possible something from the Fade entered the physical world. I hypothesize that the dwarves of that thaig performed a similar attempt to the Tevinters at roughly the same time, entered the Black City, and took the lyrium idol back with them. I presume the Old Gods are intelligent and fairly well informed about what the Black City ritual would do. If the Old Gods were at the same time in communication with the dwarves of this thaig, they could've arranged for the dwarves to retrieve the lyrium statue while a hypothetical guardian of the Black City dealt with the Tevinter mages.

With the demons roaming across the land I believe that the red lyrium idol is the first of a number of Fade originating objects to transfer to the physical world, and that the Old Gods plan to use these Fade originating objects to make themselves more powerful. Seeking out a way to destroy these Fade originating objects will be the plot of DA4 or DA5.

Was I the only one who thought that the singing Bartrand heard was the call of the Old Gods because from what I've seen on the forums no one has brought it up before? Think about it, Bartrand describes a beautiful song that he desperately tries to here again causing him to go insane that's the same thing thing that happened to The Mother from DAO:A.
