So what would you prefer: companions, that are not in your party, staying idle in your base camp while you are adventuring, doing nothing, or you would like sometimes to randomly encounter them while traveling?

If it's like Origins or Awakening where everyone bunks together so to speak, and social organization is more hierarchical, then I think bumping into companions randomly is unlikely. Especially since it seems like we're never quite clear as to whether the entire party was actually at each event in Origins or ME even though you, the player, only had control over some of them. Random encounters at a hub seem like a good idea even here though, like in ME3. I would love to bump into a mage companion weighing herbs in the market district of a hub city while I wander around, or visit the group lush at the local bar.

If it's more like DA2 where everyone sort of has their own lives and Hawke just calls on them when in need, and there are no formal methods of control like the Warden has in Awakening or (to a lesser extent) in Origins, then free interaction in the game world makes a lot more sense. I could even see non-selected companions randomly show up at one of those bandit ambushes we all know and love as a non-controllable ally, commenting afterward that she was just passing through.

I hope in this one we have a single camp or base of operations though. I never liked having to run around Kirkwall, through houses and taverns and the Keep, to talk to companions, only to have them have nothing to say. Plus it feels more like a family when you're setting out and going home together.

I like how the invasion of Denerim handled it. You had your main party off cutting it's way through the city, and the game flashed perspective to your reserves once or twice as they fought stragglers at the gates. Just for general walking around purposes it wouldn't work, but I'd like to see major story points play out like that.

Definitely companions should be randomly encountered.

In particular, it would be a lot of fun to encounter current or former companions on the other side of a particular mission.

Given that Hawke and most all of his companions pretty much worked as freelance mercenaries, I'm kinda surprised this didn't happen in DA2.

I think it would be nice if you were in say, Denerim's marketplace with Sten, Alistair, and Wynne, and you run into Leliana and Zevran trying to decide which poison to buy, or when you go into the Deep Roads, your companions not in the party mention that they're going to check out the tavern.

It would bother me if I randomly ran into them while wondering the Brecilian Forest
