Alright, I'm opening this up for the funny idea that came up by Broganisity from the MP forum:

Image IPB

What does a krogan have to do in an all Quarian team? Easy: Our little friend was adopted by Quarian parents.

This thread shall tell some stories about a Zar, the Krogan who grew up with Quarians.
Naturally this had to lead to problems of all possible sorts: beginning with childhood, adolescence and probably ending up in a furious series of headbutting during pilgrimage / rite of passage and capturing a ship for the flotilla, the Quad-Quad.

This thread will contain most likely short bits of stories that deal with the growing up of our friend.
Feel free to ask questions or make suggestions about epsiodes you would lile to read about and I will see if I can come up with something.
Broganisity might have some ideas for the part where our Krogan goes to space to be a real, umh, Quarian?

Being members of the Patrol Fleet his parents often had to undertake missions away from the main course of the Quarian flotilla. One of their mission sent them ahead of the flotilla to a former Krogan moon. It was deemed dangerous as there were still small settlements of Krogan clans who fought fiercely over the small territory. However, old Krogan installations promised to harbour navigational data that would help the flotilla navigate through the dangerous asteroid belt in this system as there were still minefields in it from a long forgotten conflict.

It was here where they found the little krogan baby that was the only survivor of one of the bloody fights. Shia noticed a faint signal she picked up with her omni tool, a beacon, most likely emitted by a life suit. She followed the readings and found a krogan body slumped down on the ground. It was a female and she had a nasty shotgun wound in her back that ripped through the suit and right through the hump.
She lay strange as if she was clutching something and Shia went to investigate what it was. When she turned around the body she saw that the dead female indeed clutched something - a cocoon, a life pod. In her last moment she had protected the little creature in it with her life.
Krogan would never turn away their face from an enemy. This one did.

Shia did not think and picked up the life pod and returned to Kon, her partner who had scanned and salvaged what they had come for.

We can imagine what course the discussion took with the obligatory "We can't take it. It's a Krogan", "They are wild animals!".

All you need to know is that Shia would never have babies, a nasty byproduct of immunologic deficiencies.
She just remarked: "I know nothing about wild animals, my parents raised me a decent Quarian, your parents raised you a decent Quarian. And we just do the same to this kid!"
And she presented him the little pod and it was just then that a reflection of light stirred the little creature inside and it moved uneasy as if it searched something. But it seemed to take comfort again, be it that it felt the lifepod was still clutched to a female breast or because of the kind eyes that gazed at it.

Kon looked up at Shia: "Are you sure?" And the sparkle of her eyes told him she was, and this sparkle was what he loved so much about her. They didn't need to say another word.

Hell yes!
I am going to keep my eye on this thread INTENTLY.

Names names names...

We'd need to know on which ship he's on to get his last name.

I vote for Qwib Qwib! Koris is the most level headed cpt. I know of in the quarian fleet. He's advocating peace with the Geth so he should logically be more accepting of other species in his fleet.

As for first name.

Maybe Weevil?
Scarab?
Clytus?
Photinus?
Lamprima?
Lucanus?
Cuvera?

One of those? They're latin names of different beetles.
They also sound a bit Quarian. Could also be a good methaphor for him. After all he's a Krogan in a Quarian ship. He's larger and has a bigger exoskeleton than his other insect peers.
Well that's my suggestion >.<;

Personal favorite: Weevil vas Qwib-Qwib. As a name it's positive would make his personality a bit more joyous I think.

Zar. It was the sound he kept making all the way back to the Migrant Fleet, clutching his swaddling in his stubby fingers, his little jaw stretching and eyes bulging as he gazed around frantically, "Zar! Zaaarrrr!" It just stuck.

Oh yeah Nar before surname makes more sense.
Nar meaning child of and Vas meaning crew of.
*hangs head in shame and goes back to read the damn codex...*

And of course teh surname is whatevcer the parents surname is... Man my lore is rusty...

Zar nar Qwib-Qwib. I like this. Has a whimsical sound to it, just say it out loud: Zar nar Qwib-Qwib.

But what is the name of his Bestest Friend Five-ever? I feel like it should begin with an M or a V.

Mil'Nolus nar Qwib-Qwib? Just something that popped up. She's going to be from the Qwib-Qwib of course (how else would they meet?).

I'd name her Vida' Nolus myself :3
Means Life in spanish and is a female given name.

Sorry I'm a sucker for names with meaning.
Course it's your story so I'll back off a tad. But I do love the story concept too much to not tell what I think. >.<;

***Cerberus classified transmission - Audiolog 4731, Flotilla operations, intercepted by tightbeam channel 3A.g***

Captain Haris: ... and I'm expecting two young men from Pilgrimage within the week. We have about 6 now and should see that they meet some decent girls.

Admiral Raan: Fine, I shall contact Admiral Koris about organising a welcome party for all the young and unmarried folk on the flotilla. What will the two bring?

Captain Haris: I don't know for sure, but they have been flying the name "Starlane Salvage and Wrecking" lately. I guess they were active in the Skyllian Verge and are bringing ship parts.

Admiral Raan: Excellent. One last thing, Captain, I hear one of your away teams has brought a Krogan back to your ship?

Captain Haris: Indeed, Admiral, a newborn. I sent out the Torah couple for intel on our path through the system and they entered a Krogan site which must have been the scene of a firefight just shortly before. They found the creature as the only survivor of the battle. The two are good scavengers but have been a bit on the edge for being the only couple here without children. I guess that made them take the child.

Admiral Raan: Captain, I cannot endorse this. The Krogan creature might sooner or later become a hazard to your ship and the fleet.

Captain Haris: I understand.

Admiral Raan: Good, when will you send the baby away? I can dispatch a transport for its transfer to the Krogan homeworld.

Captain Haris: ...

Admiral Raan: Captain?

Captain Haris: Admiral, I cannot do this. I have declared the creature a member of this ship. We just had a little ceremony and named the boy Zar vas Illeen.

Admiral Raan: Han! By the homeworld! How can you decide such a thing over my head?

Captain Haris: As a Captain of this ship...

Admiral Raan: Don't you play smart with me, Han! You know well that matters affecting the safety of MY fleet are not in YOUR hands! I will NOT tolerate dissent on one of my ships. The Krogan is a danger and I will have it removed!

Captain Haris: Do you want to bring this before the Board?

Admiral Raan: And make me the laughing stock of the other admirals for not keeping my Captains in line? I'll come over, Han, and have a close look. You'd better have the Illeen in top shape!

Captain Haris: *sigh*

***Transmission terminated - Pending evaluation... Low significance, moving to archive***

I get my name ideas by the power of wikipedia and latin actually.
Most of them are cliche but a name with meaning makes the reader go.. huh that's actually kinda fun or smart or stuff.
Like the quarian ship names. Vas ichtomy = Vasectomy = A surgical procedure to sterilize men.

Also @ dr Random. I think Raan would be the second best choice for the admiral in charge of Zar and if I remember right wasn't cpt. Haris Talis old ship cpt.? It would fit for the situation.

In general, Quarian lifeships were hubs of Quarian culture, tradition and lifestyle.
Some lifeships were famed for their theatres and entertainment productions, some had exceptional cuisine or excelled with their fashion design and shopping malls. Others were centers of trade with their vast arrays of docking possibilities or even production sites for finest Quarian items, like tools or textiles.

Although galactic opininon often harboured reservations against Quarians, the race led an ordered life in seclusion on the flotilla. The main difficulties Quarian society faced were economical and health challenges. A good part of the population was busy keeping the Flotilla up and running but that didn't generate the credits to buy spare parts which couldn't be fabricated at the factory ships.

Demand, supply and trade routes were difficult to keep running while the Flotilla moved, even for the small number of Volus that were accepted temporarily on the Flotilla for organising the important trade. The Volus finally suggested, Quarians should emphasize on intellectual property, creativity, art.
Those could be traded more easily: A software suite, fashion design or digital entertainment didn't need vast sums of capital to start with, but could earn decent revenue nonetheless.

The most iconic lifeships were those that sported gravball teams. The weekly league games were usually busy times with shuttles transferring fans from all over the Flotilla to the matches.
Quarian Gravball, a fast-paced zero-g sport, became popular galactic-wide when the Volus began marketing the league matches on the extranet. First rate teams were so famous that the names of their ships became a familiarity in the galaxy and the object of nerdy fandom - they even had trusty Hanar and Elcor fanclubs.
The Premier League, as it was called, developped into a reliable and important source of funding for the Flotilla and did much to improve the image of Quarians overall.

The Qwib Qwib was one of the larger lifeships of the flotilla. As such it featured the full range of civilian accomodations, training facilities and educational capacities.
The ship was famed for the best educational facilities and teachers within the Flotilla.
As such it was deemed the best place to conduct the "Krogan Experiment". If worst came to worst, the case would be dealt with accordingly and swiftly. On a lifeship, Quarian jurisdiction was predominantly civil, objective and mostly independent from the say of the military.
Any trouble Zar would cause here and there weren't any favours his parents could pull with their Captain. In fact, everybody believed that worst would come to worst with Zar - the only exception being his new parents. And even their spirits were on the brink of faltering when they were confronted with the not so simple task of Krogan daycare.

If Zar ever gets a ship I propose this as its registred name.
Seriously. It's badass.

Also @ dr.random. What's your creative process when you write?
Do you double check your writing? make it up on the fly? Flowcharts?
Do you plan ahead?
Curiosity is fun. :3

Difficult to say. At first I need an idea, that sparks my interest. Like the original "But he's adopted"-thread.
From then it's mostly imagining things. I imagine mostly pictures, scenes in my head.
I let it flow and if I spot  something interesting I consider  writing about it. I really suck with drawing and painting, so putting the little pictures into words is the only way to do it.
I am amazed  about people who can put down things from their mind into pictures. It's
like a mystery to me.

For example: I was thinking about how the  parents feed the krogan, they'd need to buy food somewhere, because
there is only this dextro-amino stuff around with the Flotilla. So I imagined what they were talking about, having a conflict about it. The only plan was to transfer them to a lifeship. Then I thought about: What is this stuff about lifeships after all? How do  they actually live? Those ships are big and I needed to fill all the  empty corridors within. Then all the people sitting on the lifeships needed something to do. Basically, I built the image step by step.

I could have asked someone: "Hey what is life on the civilian fleet  about?" - "Dude, it's their cities, they gotta live somewhere, you know, silly bugger." - And I wouldn't have cared any more.

When I think about Zar, I see him having mostly a very difficult adolescence - interesting things but I see too much conflicts. This guy needs some love.

Yeah, I plan ahead in an abstract way, actual stories are mostly spontaneous.
Flowcharts I don't have, yet. The thing would need to grow more. For now I'm just putting together episodes that might develop into something bigger.
Sometimes writing a thing and finalizing it directly is just right. Mostly for the emotional bits. However, I like to leave a written bit over night and review the next day or leave it for a couple of days. Who knows, there might be coming a better idea, twist or sentence to improve the story. And it helps finding errors in what you wrote. And sometimes you just need to trash it.

And that is why I never have anything concrete to show.

Currently I just have a word document filled with timelines with notable dates or scenes being explained by a descriptive paragraph or so. Nothing worth reading, just my way of storyboarding.

Although I was, in fact, writting a scene involving Zar getting food. Since they grow all their food in their liveships, I had this strange thought of Zar having to tend to a 'garden' for his own food (with meat being a rare commodity...get it? Rare? Fine I'll stop.) and how his little garden was his own little safe haven to go to in order to calm down after 'such and such' situations happen (otherwise he'd probably punch someone's helmet open.).

This is a nice idea. I think Quarians don't eat meat at all, so this could really lead to some awkward situations.
I thought about that enhanced diet could have something to do with fish.

Anyway, if you feel the story makes you happy, sad or laugh you should just write it. If it still kindles your emotions it is ready to be shared.

Some people said that the Quarian race was dying. Dying a slow death of biological degradation. Every new generation revealed more and more vulnerabilities and immunologic deficiencies.

Space was a great place to be and it harboured many wonders to behold. But the Flotilla was still a makeshift fleet and not a real home Quarians could return to in order to relax or retire. Basically the whole situation was a gamble about whether the Quarian could adapt more quickly than suffer from the adverse effects of continuous space travel.

Individuals dealt differently with this. Some turned vengeful and bitter against their fate, others tried to do the "right thing" to advance the situation. With health concerns being a major factor people came up with ideas to adapt society radically to their environment.
Quarian children regularly had to experience zero-g environments. Compared to human standards the Quarian physical education was far superior when it comes to space environment and applied technology. As a result, the Quarian marines could pick from a pool of very suitable candidates. These troops were trained thoroughly and for boarding mission in a hostile environment they were considered to be among the very best: Grown in a suit, moving in zero-g since they were kids, every trooper a seasoned tech expert and very creative in finding and exploiting an enemy weakness.

Quarians named their marine platoons "teams", because they were organised similarly to the workforce. Being a Quarian inevitably meant to take responsibility for other people. Doing an extra-vehicular job meant to look out for colleagues in problems.
In space, things can be frighteningly quiet and lonesome. Suit malfunction, space "hysteria", disorientation or simply "losing the grip" could spell doom on anybody. And anybody had to do this dangerous tasks on the normal rotation - unless they were really bad at the job - but that's another story.

There even were people who thought that a Krogan might add to the toughness of the Quarian. Skills that aren't challenged might wither and become rusty some day. So yes, a good portion of people had a pragmatic stance to the Krogan appearance named Zar abord the Qwib Qwib.
Not the peers of Zar, however. Zar was different and the suit he wore (he didn't need it but it had become a cultural custom already to conceal the face) couldn't hide it. Children can be atrocious to each other at times and Zar suffered a lot from nit-picking, isolation and being strongly discouraged from dealing with conflicts in a more Krogan fashion. Deliberately breaking a suit was considered a capital offense for adult delinquents and was accordingly dealt with.

Frustration, sadness and suppressed instincts were an all too common experience made by Zar. The successful attempts of socialising him with other kids couldn't quite make up for this.
Things almost became even gloomier when Zar was schooled. At this age he hadn't revealed any technical excellence.
Kon and Shia had tried to make him acquainted to the world of technical knowledge with lots of incentives but Zar mostly climbed on their lap and begged to hear another story about one of their missions.
They finally gave up. It was almost impossible to evade these eyes that gazed and them in awe and wonder when they told their stories.
The trembling little body when it came to the showdown, the fist-shaking and "Ha! That told them a lesson!" and the constant vows to become stronger, faster and more agile in order to join them once "Zar got big" one day. They sighed a lot when the boy immediately ran off after the stories to exercise for faster, stronger and more agile as he never mentioned "smarter".
Their son clearly perceived them as heros and he turned out to be very dedicated about the skills that would turn him into one as well.

If were making Zar a vegetarian krogan due to meat not being present. (A good idea but... WHAT?!)
We need to think what he'd eat. A vegetarian can eat eggs and dairy products and considering he needs a good amount of nutrients protein and other to manage his excercise routine of getting strong.

He'd be eating a lot of nuts a frigging HUGE amount of them (protein), eggs (good for gaining weight), milk and cheese (bone structure, calcium), Fish could also be used it'd give him some fats aswell (the healthy kind).
He could also be on a vitamin supplement diet aswell.

I actually don't know how much a growing krogan needs energy per day, but taking into account that they can store nutrients in their hump, and them being more violent and an active race, weighting a frigging lot...

A 14 year old that weights 200 kg and is 2.50 meters long needs about 4000 calories per day and that's if they're not doing squat. For refrence a 22 year old 100 kg and 1.80 meters needs 2200 calories per day. so the 14 year old would need a bowl of nuts every day to keep their energy per day allright. And if he runs about 4 hours a day because wtf else will he do if he wants to get stronger and runs at a speed of let's say 6.7 mph he'd be burning 6600 calories. For refrence 6600 calories is 1.15 KG of nuts. THAT'S A LOT OF NUTS!

of course that example is for humans and I lack data to turn that into krogan statistics and am not really sure if this is even accurate, to my knowledge 14 year old 2.5 meter long humans aren't that common.

TLDR: This guy is going to need a frigging truck load of food and nuts growing up. And him being krogan he's gonna need even MORE possibly. He's going to be a veritable black hole of consumption...

REFERENCE GOT!

It wasn't about him being a vegitarian, it was simply about the difficulty of acquiring meat in such a large quantity, let alone food for him, making it a necessity for him to grow his own (not to mention the quanity, since you did. Probably buys elephant sized bags of peanuts from the Intragalactic Circus or something!). Though imagine him going out on pilgrimage and getting himself a Varren Burger...Welp. Its settled: I'm writing food stories. :o

Also I'd say the excerpt I'm working on is looking good...gotta do some reviews and I should have it up by tomorrow!
