I'm a long way from BGII/TOB as I'm starting a new PC in BG/TotSC but I want to carry the character thru into BGII/TOB.

I would like to start as a vanilla-fighter and then dual to a Cleric in BGII after I secure Nalia's Keep (don't like the multiple strongholds option).

I plan to head to the keep shortly after leaving Irenicus' dungeon (my first quest).  I estimate that I'll be ~ a 9th-level fighter at that time.

Thinking ahead I'm trying to figure out how that will affect my PC.

So???

I'll pretty much be a fighter (limited by Cleric THACO), still able to wear whatever armor I've acquired, and I'll have a few spells.   I'll still have all my HPs but I'll have just a few Cleric spells and I'll then be limited to Cleric weapon types (I prefer to keep the class weapon limitations in place).

Do I have that right?

Assuming that you give your fighter prof. points in weapons he can still use as a cleric, it sounds like you'll be very similar to Anomen. Perhaps the key issue will be what size party you use, since you want to rapidly get to C10 and get back some of your F advantages. A party of 4 might be best? Then, Crom Fayr here you go. The standard way of doing this is R/C, but then you lack decent armor until you kill a dragon.

You will also have the lower number of cleric attacks per round until regaining your fighter class. Towards the end of SoA or into ToB you would only get cleric high level abilities.

For this combination I tend to keep weapon proficiencies distinct. e.g. hammer and flail as the fighter who is typically melee, then mace and sling as a cleric. Once fighter levels are regained you have a good spread, if you'd selected say sling with both classes you will lose the overlapping bit, and if you'd selected dart or bow to get the fighter some ranged ability that would be useless once dualled.

(As weapons are mentioned by Morbidest2; the Flail of Ages is easy to locate and great for a cleric, the Sling of Seeking is cheap and causes a lot of ranged damage, and the mace of disruption for anything like demi-liches that the previous two weapons won't work against).

You don't need to do Nalia's keep before dualing. A level 9 fighter (one of the good stopping points, since that's where fighter max out their HP) only needs 250k XP. You'll have 161k going into SoA, and about 236k when you finish breakout of of Chez Jon. You could run the circus tent to hit 250k, and then immediately dual over. 10 cleric 450k, which is a pretty decent chunk of XP, but nothing insurmountable. You'd probably want to go with a smaller party and clear out several quest areas to achieve it, but once you hit 10 Cleric, you could do Nalia's keep and she will offer it to you.

My most common BG2 character is a 7 Fighter/X Thief dual class (starts at 7/8), and Nalia has no hesitation about giving me the keys to the castle.

@ Mb2: Thanks much for all of the valuable feedback. Yes, this is an Anomen-type PC but one that closely fits me as an Army officer that wants to be a minister after the Army. I thought it would be a fun play thru.

@ G70: Thanks for the weapon-types feedback. I'm thinking Flail of the Ages all the way here for this PC and he'll have a Bastard Sword as a slashing weapon in BG. I never use a ranged weapon but need to think about where to fit the Mace of Disruption.  Lot's to plan ahead since I almost always give the MoD to Anomen but may not use him this time since we have the same skill-sets.

@ Morbist:  Great feedback and much appreciated.  That helps me shape this thing alot better.

I have to take Nalia so that leaves only one other NPC once Imoen's captured (I'm keeping usual suspects and Yoshi). Keldorn? Valygar? Mazzy? Aerie? Ugh. Decisions.

Ugh.  Just need to start playing.  None of this will matter for months.  Thanks again.

I never use a ranged weapon

That's funny. Most of my characters (PCs as well as NPCs) rarely use a melee weapon. Some practically never.

Exceptions are made when someone really needs to tank (either when some enemy must be stopped and there isn't enough room to kite them around, or to go melee with someone who is more dangerous with their ranged weapon), for my backstabbing thieves and for mopping up held/unconscious/feebleminded enemies (to conserve ammo). Tactics change a bit in ToB but not much.

Yeah, we've had that 'tank' discussion in another string.

We definately view this differently but I'm open to new ways of doing things...

...kinda, well maybe not so much.  LOL

FYI Nalia won't offer the keep to a Cleric in the vanilia game so do that before you dual... I'd go with staff for BG1 but it's your game.
