Making inventory an integral part of the game world rather than seperate menu is starting to feel very desireable to me.
Mass Effect 2 came very close to having an awesome, modern RPG inventory - Normandy itself.
This is how I've always hoped it would have been handled: Shepard&co get send on ground mission and proceed to kill pile of bad guys. Mission over. Bad guys have dropped variety of loot. Rather than picking anything up, team Shepard "tags" the desireable items for Salvage team to pick up. Player never actualy clumsily moves items from one spreadhseet menu to another. Once mission is over, salvage team moves in and does the looting(this happens "off screen" from players POV) Unique, new items like weapons, armor etc appear in various locations at Normandy. PC can then visit..say, Normandy's Armory and admire, inspect and manipulate all this newly looted stuff that has appeared on tables, armor racks and whatnot. Pick up a weapon or piece of armor etc and you get few lines of sexy juicy scifi jargon about backround of the weapon, it's penetration power and barrel length and whatnot:p
I feel this would have be so much more atmospheric, credible and smooth option than the terrible nightmare menu from hell BW was stuck with ever since they began flirting with consoles. Approach like this would make inventory an actual part of the game world.
I always felt they had - almost - done and implemented just this in ME2. It is like 50% there already. It just lacked what, 30 mins worth of VA and/or some pages of text and little more responsive and coherent pick up stuff->stuff shows up somewhere in Normandy - mechanic. Sometimes you'd see stuff you have picked up showing up there..other times..not so much. Items on Normandy virtually always lacked anything presentation or " lore" wise that would have made player feel " this is MY HELMET<3" upon inspecting or manipulating it. - It was like a traditional (Baldurs gate etc) inventory without possibility of getting the " right click" menu on items.
...Maybe they did this in ME3? I have yet to play it so can't say.
Admittedly an " inventory" like this is easier to implement in a scifi game where you have a ship following you around. Normany will inevitably and always have much more feeling and personality than something like a camp. Still, it could be easily implemented in DA ffranchise, no? An ambitious enough effort at Camp could have enough " personality" to serve as an inventory in fashion described above. Some castle or mansion even more so. Though that would possibly bring an issue with travelling.
