Hi. I just bought this game recently, and it's been an absurdly buggy and painful process downloading and setting up both Origin and ME3 itself. The Origin client seems to have very great difficulty in staying connected for any length of time, as does ME3, besides, even on a stellar computer with a very respectable internet connection that has absolutely no trouble with anything else, including Steam and a large library of modern online games.

Ok, that's fine. The infrastructure must just be poorly made or maintained or something. No helping it, I guess. That's not what this thread is about. Is this everyone's experience, though?

Anyway, after two days of wrestling with it, I finally managed to log in and stay connected long enough to play some games. I'm not new to ME3's gameplay and most of the default classes' abilities. I charged into some bronze games and worked my way up rather nicely by now, with several different classes. I've even managed to sneak into a handful of silver and even a couple of gold games in which my team emerged victorious.

Sounds like things are going fine, right? Well they really aren't. About half the time (a conservative estimate), the "EA servers" can't keep me connected, or Origin outright fails. This is especially painful when in the middle or near the end of a match, especially at the higher difficulties, because I get NOTHING for the time I put in, lose all consumeables I used during gameplay, and there's isn't a thing I can do about it.

That's half the time, and that's more than a bit of a nuisance.

Compounding the problem is the difficulty in finding a game in the first place. Due to the current Operation: Patriot, I am kicked from games at least 25% of the time for not being a nonhuman-race, which as a new player I wouldn't have even come close to unlocking yet, and can't unlock without credits, which I can only get by playing, which I can't because everyone is currently encouraged to exclude humans.

I don't have the weapons, consumeables, classes, or experience to succeed in a solo setting, so I have to waste hours of my time just for a vague hope of a steady connection and a group of randoms to take pity, or an ongoing game that I can sneak into for a paltry late-join-finish-reward. Even on Bronze.

This has not exactly been a newbie-friendly experience so far. So what's left to do? Hmmm... ask for advice, I guess.

Can anyone recommend me some really powerful and easy to use class/weapon combos that an utter newbie could use to contribute to teams and make the most out of extra short games due to flaky connection? I'd also love to get some advice on how best to spend credits. I've purchased a couple of premium spectre packs and received pretty much a giant steaming pile of crap every time. Am I wasting my very, very hard-earned credits on those, or have I just been unlucky? I'd really love some extra classes, like the shiny N7 ones. Which pack(s) are best to get those?

Sirry to hear of your experience
Its actually for this week's op, so bear with it

Firsty, get a mic. Communications is key and i believe there are tons of people out there, myself included, who are more than willing to tutor newbies assuming they'll listen. Having 2 way communications works wonder

Secondly, if you're on PC, open UDP port 3659 on your router. that sort of lessen disconnects

Thirdly, do not do other stuff like torrenting. It introduces lag

Fourthly, learn to be a supportive player, rather than an attack oriented one. Once you get some decent gear, you can start rolling

The common weapons are pretty good IMO

Avenger. Lightweight and fast
Mantis - Powerful and light

Depending on your playstyle you are accustomed to you may wan to try the following

Do you like to shoot stuff, dodge and shoot more stuff?
Try Human Soldier and master Adrenaline Rush

If you like to snipe and do headshots
Try infiltrators. You can be a close range or long range infiltrator

Like being a caster, try the Human Sentinel classes. Warp Throw bosses tillt hey're dead

Engineer classes are support role. They aim to distract and stagger, then shoot. I'd classify it as an advanced class to use.

Oh I also want to point you to this. It is quite a bit of reading but really useful. Has weapon, class and power guides etc.

You can still get uncommon and up characters out of vet packs. I agree with what others have said - spend your credits of vet packs and the odd change on recruit packs so you'll start maxing out your commons and uncommons.

Also, as for connection problems - if you really do have a nice stable network and optimum configuration settings, then host as much as possible. Don't even worry about waiting too long for people to show up in your lobby - if you start by yourself, others will likely start piling in to the match (and if no one shows, you get all the points and credits - if you die, oh well - start again).

My favorite human class is engineer too. I leave incinerate empty and rank everything else for damage pretty much (or power and capacity where appropriate). Love vanguards too (always skip shockwave), but if you're already experiencing connection problems, you absolutely must host when playing a vanguard.

As for the EA servers - yeah, you've learned the hard way how awful they can be. Very unstable and full of lag. It gets a lot worse over the weekends and especially during weekend ops (like now) from what I've observed. Those are the times of heaviest use.

Use cover.
Hang around teammates (don't go running off by yourself)
Avoid getting close to Banshees, Phantoms etc.

Doesn't everyone?  But since you haven't synced your manifest we can't tell what you have.  Starting out with PSPs is not the way to spend credits, you want to get some basic weapons up to X quickly to use.

Recruit packs first - Avenger X is your first goal.
Veteran packs next - try to get something like the Mattock and Phalanx to X.

Then you can work on those N7 weapons and buying PSPs.  I'd skip SPs, but you want some basic weapons/unlocks to tide you over first, plus getting some of those weapon mods, so buying the cheaper packs first is the way to go.

As it's been said, buy Vet packs, and max out commons and uncommons (blue and silver cards). After that, work on getting spectre packs and PSPs. Start in bronze, when its easy go to silver. When that's easy, you're ready for gold. Platinum is not just for being at the top of your game, but also having top shelf classes, equipment and gear too.

The old Mass Rejects group is quite quiet now, but still has a Mumble server where some of us meet up for games now and then - if you might find it helpful to play with friendly people who (mostly...) know what they're doing and can chat to you in real-time as you play, feel free to drop by.  And believe me, we know the pain of EA server/Origin problems.

If you'd like to add me on Origin, my ID is the same as my forum name though I don't play so much these days.

Lots of good advice has been given already but one is missing. Join a ME3 MP group and you'll rarely have trouble finding people to play with.
The biggest group is The Legion.

Feel free to add me on Origin: Lelo_Marin
I regularly host bronze/silver matches and have new folks join.

Flavorbasket. Do you still get the same frequency of disconnects when you host? The infrastructure is very poor, but not everyone has disconnects as often as you seem to have them, and on poorer connections (i.e. me) Got disconnected mid game for the first time in quite a while today.

Anywho, I generally play gold and up, but I'll play whatever if you need someone. Origin: shhegart

I really don't understand why it's like this. I can run multiple steam games at a time with absolutely no problems and perfect latency and smoothness. Games that are much, much more highly populated than ME3 could possibly be.

Is this really a common problem, and does anyone know why it's like this?

There's a rumour that ME3 is running on the server hardware and/or architecture used by EA for Ultima Online.

Urban myth.  Everyone knows that the Origin server is powered by a hamster on a threadwheel.

Yeah, the other posters have been pretty thorough, and I agree for the most part. HE is definitely one of my favourite common characters, but as much as they get grief for being a "noob class", human (nova) vanguards are pretty easy to use. If you're up for a more aggressive playstyle, i highly recommend trying it out sans Shockwave. Only thing is, if you haven't picked it up yet, stick with a pistol for as low a cooldown as you can get, not a shotgun. On bronze, you'll be hard-pressed to go down as long as you keep Charging. Just make sure you're hosting to avoid the vanguard glitch.

Again, stick with your teammates, but on bronze it's less of an issue (don't get in the habit though on other levels Image IPB!). Oh, and I'm such a hypocrite- get a mic, it'll help a lot... I still don't have one...Image IPB

Have fun!

Just want to give my two cents as well.

There are really many different types of playstyles for this game, so my first advice is to keep an open mind to explore the many possibilities. As many have mentioned though, the human engineer class does seem to present a good initiation for new players. Can't see your manifest but if you have the salarian infiltrator and a sniper rifle, it's also quite amenable to beginners.

In terms of increasing the impact you have on this game without needing to stick to a certain playstyle, I'd say for most "mortals" the one most important thing is only to unlock a good weapon. Many weapons in the game, call me cynical but they are just there to fill up the manifest and prolong your unlocks. So what's a good weapon? I know I'm not being very specific but it would come down to the individual. But you'll usually find the "better ones" tend to be the more popular ones that you find people equip in lobbies. At the end of the game, see if there're any good player in your team (a not so scientific way is to use the scoreboard) look at their loadouts and play class.

For a beginner, I won't suggest you to buy Premium packs. Try first on the Veteran and Spectre packs. If you don't feel yourself being overwhelmed (i.e. you are not dying like 100 times in a game), try silver, although you probably need at least another good player in the lobby to get things going more smoothly. If you're playing silver, you should primarily focus on your survival first, because even if you're not doing much damage you have drawn enemy fire, and that would help the team. It doesn't sound like you're making much contribution this way, but really you ARE.

Once you have come to a stage where you want to become good at gold (or above!), you must make yourself being able to output a lot of damage (hence why many have used the term DPS) because enemies take a lot of damage to kill. Hence why some would use a build like infiltrator specced to sniper rilfe damage in tactical cloak using a Widow or Claymore (edit: Claymore obviously is not a sniper rifle but does a lot of damage in the correct hands) for example. It's for this reason why you may really want to do some serious deliberations on your builds, much more that in the single player, because even at Insanity you probably could still go with pretty much any weapon without much hassles. Not so here.

And there's one more thing: if you want to become good at higher difficulties, learn about power combos. Power combos do normalised damage, meaning they do the same damage to enemies percentage-wise regardless of difficulties, so a warp/throw combo in bronze would work more or less the same as in higher difficulties.

A long post, but hope you can find as much enjoyment from this game as the many of us here have.

First of all I know how it feels to be new I really sucked but here's some advice I can give to you when I was new to MP

1.Predicting enemy spawns in each map is good because then you can simply rocket it so waves go by faster especially in later waves when they put a lot of tough enemies like for example ''2 atlas, 3 cerberus troopers, 2 phantoms'' probably not a problem on bronze and maybe silver but on gold and platinum it helps.

2.Don't be so so shy to use consumables just try not to use them so early in the waves and only later waves or during objective waves where you probably have the hardest upload spot in the map,

3.I say stick with your favourite class and weapon combo for a while that your comfortable for a while so you can start getting aliens of the class your using and better weapons. You don't have to follow this because you probably will get bored of the same class your using but thats what I did at the time when I was new.

4. If your comfortable on bronze then you can move up to silver I don't honestly think it was any harder IMO, if you want to reach gold I suggest getting some new alien classes, better weapons and some gear same.

5. If someone is dead and a few enemies are surrounding him don't try to revive that person just yet, though you won't have this problem if your an infiltrator, try to destroy a couple of enemies then when there's not that many left then go try to revive that person.

6. If your the one dying don't use your medi gel yet wait if someone can get you up because its just a waste if use a medi gel and that person was like near you and could of revived you.

7. if you do down in a horrible spot like for example being surrounded by a ton of enemies like a phantom and an atlas and one cerberus turret and maybe a couple of cerberus troopers its better just to get yourself up and try to get yourself out of that group of enemies

Before even giving any suggestions..... is your computer connected directly via cat5 cable to your router or modem or are you going wirelessly? If you are going wirelessly you need to stop. You should never play any online (tps/fps) multiplayer game via wireless as you lose tons of packets upstream and downstream. Try this first and then see if your games drop. A third person shooter game needs internet bandwidth differently than other games.

Some good practical advice above re Veteran packs and joining a group. Nothing worse than playing lots of bronze or silver games and spending 99K on a PSP  and getting nothing v 5 Veteran packs . Also people from groups are happy to help you build your credits I found the Asari Adept to be a great start character to use because you are not reliant on weapons and Stasis is a life saver.

Getting started, I had good luck with salarian and human engineers. The drone is a great guard dog and acts as another squad member. If nearby it can alert you to baddies sneaking up on you. Incinerate and overload are good, complementary powers.

My best clases are infiltrators and adepts now. In sniping, I've been using the Indra to good success as a sniper. It has a high rate of fire and is forgiving as it's easy to walk your fire onto the target. The shadow is fun to play as you just have to run up from behind the baddies and use your annihilation field.

The psp pack payoff seems to come and go in waves. I'll get several in a row of good stuff and then have a dry spell of crud. Sometimes, the store seems to be self aware and deny you the weapons you use the most.

Focus on maxing commons and uncommons. It's frustrating, yes, but once you get all of the weapon mods, low-level weapons, and low-level classes, you won't get them anymore, and a lof of the uncommon weapons can be extremely useful on bronze and silver. The Phaeston and Mattock are good rifle choices (the latter is even gold-viable), the Eviscerator is a very servicable early shotgun, the Mantis is a fine early rifle, and the Viper and Raptor are both quite servicable up until Gold, and the Tempest is one of the best SMGs in the game. Having maxed mods (and none of the weapon mods except the new ones are rare) means you'll be able to get the most out of new weapons you acquire.

A lot of players try to eschew the basics in favor of going all for the rares, but if you do this, you wind up getting a ton of otherwise-middling stuff in packs. The only thing in this rarity you can't get from Veteran packs is gear, due to broken drop-rates.

For classes, Engineers are excellent for beginners, the Human Engie all the more so. Rocket Drones are amazing. If you want a more combat-oriented class, the Human Soldier is good, if a skosh bland, and very gear reliant (its abilities increase expotentially if you have Grenade wargear).

A lot of the Uncommon classes are quite powerful. Drell in general are hard to use but very effective, Turians are excellent with a little practice, and the Quarian Infiltrator is a great class to learn for both support and offense.
