The question is - why do mages even wear robes? It pops up all over every type of fantasy game but it never seems to make sense. It seems like an awkward kind of clothing to wear, especially if you anticipate being in the middle of combat. Not saying that shirts and pants are the right answer either.

Something like the Fugitive's Mantle in DA2 is great (as was mentioned before in this thread).

Anders explains this in DA:A. (It's so they can have easy access for lots and lots of random, quick sex).

They look fine with those robes. I'm more concerned about my Male Mage Warden. Thanks to the girly robes, I wore chainmail through the whole game. Stats be damned!

Arcane warrior + blood mage is about as powerful as a DAO mage could get. How does wearing mail gimp your stats? I definitely can see how it would make it easier to rebuff male mages, which is why my extremely task oriented elven mage in love with Zevran wore mail all through Awakening.

Well, I'm not a blood mage so there you go.

Nah, it's the "Gandalf Effect". Whatever he wears becomes the fashion of the millenia, while transcending dimensions, multiverses, media, and dreams.

I want more mage outfits like the Fugitive's Mantle, that outfit looks so darn good on females. I despise so many of the mage clothes in the games that I never wear anything but that one. I also use a mod for Origins so I can wear the same outfit there <3

Fugitive's Mantle was a senational outfit. I even made a perfect hipster Hawke using that armor for the rest of the playthrough.

I think the DLC armors were really hit and miss. I hope releasing them was partly a way to expirement and test the waters for what outfits the fans responded to.

Personally, my favorite armor/clothing of DA2 came from the MotA DLC. Those leather and plaid (?) numbers they were wearing during the hunt? The redesigned Warden armor from Legacy comes in close second. Both styles look great on both genders, still have a unique look to Dragon Age and appear frequently in fanart. Only one is available to Hawke. I'd be 100% behind more female mage armor like that.

Do not even know if there should be a specific 'dresscode' for female mages at all..

That the circle mages would wear the same or very similar clothing is kind of logical because they are part of that community. Female mages outside the circle wore the same style of clothes with no regards from where they came from. Different head wear maybe and the colours..

Can imagine that a female apostate mage from Ferelden dresses very different then one from Orlais.

An example of something very different:

Really, apostates should dress like an ordinary person of the appropriate class and culture. Because the idea is to not announce "Hey, mage here!" to everyone.

While I'd guess both Circle Mages and Tevinter Magisters would be dressed to announce their status as mages, though for different reasons.

These are all great suggestions and I love them. Honestly, I just want the boob-thing to be eliminated or fixed.

Oh and what I meant by saying "low slung boobs + no bra" was that the crappy mage robes give off the appearance that your mage isn't wearing a bra, because they outline your boobs very low (as if they're hanging...)

It's a fashion disaster. I don't care how that makes me sound. :::estrogen:::

The Fugitive's Mantle was perfect it, even had a Chantry symbol on the back to really confuse the templars.

ITA about that robe being ugly. My DAO is modded so all female circle mages wear the elf version.

Well...I had always found most female mage clothing I encountered kind if baffling...I mean...where do they keep all those potions and stuff. And as for the "boobie-trapped" clothing,hehe-completely useless, unless one wants to use boobmagic,if you know what I mean...

In terms of style - I do not really mind,as long as it is practical at the same time.

A comfortable middle ground  between these two.

Most robes in both DA:O and DA2 looked terrible in general. I found myself sticking with armor long after I should have ditched it for better ones because the others looked so bad.

It's not just mage pants we need; it's better robes as well.

It's "Mage Gear".

We have a mage pants thread, a female mage robes thread, a wands thread, a better staves thread...

I think they just need to go back to the drawing board on clothing and gear for mages.

Is there a thread on mage hats yet?  I reinstalled DAO a few days ago and was rudely reminded just how atrocious they are.  I pictured my mage wearing a chrome skullcap like Merlin in Excalibur.  Instead, my guy looks like he has a plastic grocery bag tied to his head.  Thank the modding gods for the no helmet hack.

I use that same mod, for that exact same reason.

Since it's become a running gag amongst the community, even if they DO fix the goofy gear for mages, you know they'll throw a few in just to be silly (or cruel).

If there were a silly mage hat as an option, that would be funny. It's when they are all absurd that it's a bit much.

the Fugitive Mantle(DLC),Apostate's robes(dlc),Champion and Grey Warden robes(DLC) are the best looking Mage gear in DA2 IMO in Origins I generally went Arcane Warrior and equipped the Juggy set but Avernus robes' looked great on my female bloodmage elf*if only it was black and red* it would have been perfect for a darkish character.

More "armored" robes like in the DA3 mage concept art would be welcome.

Exactly! Between the DLC and the concept art I think they must be moving in the right direction with mage style.

Although I'm not the biggest fan of how they're portraying Tevinter style in the comics. I guess only time will tell if the actual games keep that same look.

I don't think there is any reason for an apostate to wear any robes.

They should wear civilian clothing to blend. The whole point of an apostate character is that they are running away from the state. Also a few rogue skills would be handy. A bit of stealth would help with the evading from the Templars.

I would like to see Apostate mage as it's own class combining rogue and mage abilities along with a whole new skill tree of unique abilities. Why the unique abilities? Well Apostates are not confined to the schools of magic that are taught at the Circle of Magi. They can learn forbidden spells.

Their clothes are to enhance stealth.
They have a lot of spells for defensive purposes, keeping hidden, and setting up traps for templars.
Area of effect destruction spells are used as a last resort, when they become surrounded by Templars.
Due to collaterial damage caused by area of effect spells, and the simple fact that powerful spells are not very stealthy, these sorts of spells are rarely used.

It's even the concept art! Why did they not implement this? It looks a lot better than the unflattering robes we ended up with in both games.

That'd be awesome! I would love to have tiara 'esque' hoods

I agree. This is a lot better then most of the robes i both games....
