I think you (BioWare, obviously) should combine the two systems, and combine them this way:
Keep the Friendship/Rivalry system, but allow the game to display "[Companion] approves +##" for a friendship increase, and "[Companion] disapproves +##" for a rivalry increase. This way, people can make reference to it in memes, comics, etc. That's something that was missing in DA2. It's also a less base way of showing what a character thinks of the player's choice, because we know whether or not it's a friendship or rivalry increase (or a decrease if the companion is on the opposite side, to their reaction). We don't need it to say "friendship" or "rivalry", because we can tell the difference between the two (and "approves" and "disapproves" could easily substitute).
Technically, it's not really combining them, but rather taking elements from one, and altering the other, but whatever.
Simple suggestion, is simple.
