I love the art of the inquisition. The sole hero standing on burnt ground with a horde of demons overhead. He has a flaming sword, but it is almost useless she he lets it hang to his side while he uses the only true power to stop the demons, the hand-rift thing, to blast a hole into the swarm of blackness. That takes the same of a dragon's head. It is no longer a "blood dragon" but a "fade dragon" which is awesome.

The distinction is that the protagonist is doing something, ie. standing against a tide of demons while demonstrating a key game mechanic (his glowing Fade hand) instead of just standing there and looking GRRR IMMA BADASS. Also, the cover makes good use of the dragon motif. What so different with Inquisition's art?
He's just facing the other direction, wields a sword, and has his hand up.
All of them happen to have the protagonist in the middle with something at the top. The designs are similar.
Incidentally, comparing Batman Arkham Asylum or Destiny's cover to Shadows of Mordor makes it seem even more generic.

Isn't that exactly what Talion is doing with his glowing hand whilst walking away from a dead pile of orcs?
This is an example of unique:

Having a protagonist standing in the middle is a common trait (therefore generic) that Inquisition's cover art doesn't break free from.
Hilariously enough, if you Google "generic game cover art" and go to Google images, you'll find Inquisition's cover art in the third row. Frankly, we've seen this generic cover from Bioware before:

My conclusion is that most covers are generic.

Not exactly. What is he using his glowing hand for? It's just there.Isn't that exactly what Talion is doing with his glowing hand whilst walking away from a dead pile of orcs?.
Sure, Inquisition's cover isn't breaking new ground. But it is a well-designed image that conveys the themes of the game and uses the dragon motif in a clever way - you might not even see the dragon at first glance. This is an example of unique:

The point I was refuting was Akikishi's contention that Shadow of Mordor's was "more original" than Inquisition's cover art, when it's really just another dudebro standing on a battlefield glowering at the camera. (And not a particularly well-composed shot at that.)

I didn't. Man did I feel like a fool because I looked at it, posted it on Facebook, and then later I noticed the Dragon and posted the fact I did all excited like and everyone was like...wait...you are seing it now?

People are confusing generic layout with generic imagery. The SoM cover is a Middle Earth cover, anyone familiar with ME can see that whether or not they play games. The cover is also character driven.

Even without any words, you could tell what game that cover was for.

Like it or not, covers are SUPPOSED to be generic. Anyone who actually knows what is in the game and gives a damn is getting it regardless of its box art; covers are for introducing new players to the IP. Having it follow a familiar thematic structure can make it more widely appealing and a 'safe' purchase option. 'Unique' covers often imply small/indie developers or experimental style which in most people's minds is more of a gamble then 'like Game X, but with Y'.
Bioshock Infinite actually went with an incredibly generic cover to INCREASE its development budget: budget increases are dependant on convincing producers is will sell better, and the numbers don't lie - 'generic' covers sell really, really, well. That's why they're so common as to be 'generic'.
They provided an alternative, more stylised version of the cover for the old fans on the opposite side (the cover slip was reversible).

Only if you know who Geralt actually is. Take out the title and it's just some pasty dude with a sword.
Well said.
