The splintmail armor has become part of Alistair's iconic look, though. How many people do you ever see cosplaying Alistair NOT wearing that splintmaiL?
Likewise, how many Morrigan cosplayers do you see wearing an outfit other than the one she starts out with?
But that's exactly the point.
Any part of clothing can become part of an iconic look. It's usually the clothing a character wears in his first appearance, or wearing most of hte time, or wearing while doing something very memorable.
Alistair and morrigan prove my point.
Party NPC's don't need special fixed clothes made just for them to be memorable and "iconic".
