P.S. Fun fact. Just for fun I entered anorexic elf in google and dragon age images were on 2nd page.
Crack is a hell of a drug.
Seriously though, I liked the concept of BioWare wanting to distinguish elves from humans. They are a separate race they deserve to look like their own race instead of small humans with pointy ears. I would like to see the concept developed more than it was DA2, but honestly I think it is just a matter of polygon count. Fenris and Merrill look great, most other elves (like the one above) did not get that same treatement and ended up looking alien in a bad way.
For all we know, humans looks like elves but are just taller and smaller ears.

I consider it a decent source for fairly up-to-date definitions. Merriam-Webster and other established dictionaries tend to lag behind the live language more, if just because they have bigger reputation to maintain. As simple example, M-W still has "cool" meaning "very good" marked as "slang".Eyil wrote...
Google isn't exactly the most compelling evidence. Dictionary.com, Miriam Webster and the Oxford English dictionary only describe anorexic as "relating to a loss of appetite" (through anorectic) and relating to someone suffering from anorexia nervosa.
Well, see -- your statement was, to quote:And I'm not saying that I think they look emaciated. I'm saying that if the OP thinks that they look emaciated, then they should bleeding well use the word emaciated.
leaving aside there's no "if" there to speak of, the catch is the OP doesn't mention body proportions of the elves at all. They merely use "anorexic" in the subject, and state that redesigned elves look like a different species (and it's something the OP approves)Using "anorexic" as a term to mean "thin" or "emaciated" is extremely insulting.
So i'm afraid bringing the idea of these elves looking emaciated... it's entirely your own. And that simply makes me question why would you even think that, if you believe DA2 elves look all healthy etc.

Emaciated is a common word that people who say anorexic actually mean. And for the record - just because I say something in one context doesn't mean that I hold it as my own opinion in another.tmp7704 wrote...

Just replace 'anorexic' with 'unattractive' and I think you'd have almost everyone on board with your ideas.
The problem is that the "humans with pointy ears" type of elf is a bit overdone and not very interesting. Aren't they supposed to be an entirely different species?

Most of the new DA elves were more hideous than dark spawn. Trying to make them look like the blue hippy elves from avatar was a mistake.
Are you perhaps thinking of the models for some of those minor filler NPCs that were standing around in Kirkwall - if so, it wasn't just the elves, those human NPCs didn't look very good either, as they incorporated very low res textures, etc.

Considering they're generally portrayed as reproducing with humans and producing fertile offspring, not really.
edit: Generally the chief distinguishing traits for elves other than pointy ears, is immortality/extreme longevity. But Bioware decided not to have that.

While I think the second elf looks horrible, I don't think it's fair to use a modded character, just how it's not fair to do the Shianni/Orana comparison.
That's not a modded character, that's the Dalish elf who confronts a former werewolf at the Wounded Coast.

@mike_laidlaw Are the elves appearance going to be different in DA3? Wasn't a big fan of the DA2 Elves.
Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw
@Daigon92 Somewhat, but they won’t go back to just humans with pointy ears. Middle ground, I expect.

Lore states that Elves are attractive to humans. They are graceful and beautiful. This is why they are so sought after in Orlais (among other places) as slav... er "servants". Elven ****s are very popular for this reason, etc.
The generic Elf in DA2 was Neither Graceful NOR Beautiful. There were a few that were attractive and the Keeper was totally graceful when she walked into the Alienage, but that was pretty much that.
So For me, I would like the elves to have more well defined bodies, lean but with muscle and curves that fit (slender but fit). The neck needs to be shortened and/or thickened. The huge head on a stick neck is really bad. Talis gives me the creeps because of that. Make them walk erect, with grace and not hunched over like gollum. It is okay to look different from human, just they should not look like starving aliens.

I don't mind the larger eyes and ears, except that I think they were a bit to exaggerated. The same goes for the shape of the nose combined with the forehead just seemed a bit odd to me. The appearance, IMHO, it almost had the look of and attempt to combine the traditional elves of high fantasy with the Na'vi of Avatar at times, and the ears sticking outward reminds me of some of the anime art I've seen.
In the end, however, I would just like to see the exaggeration toned down a bit, and some appropriate footwear

Just tone the DA2 elves back a bit and they'll walk the perfect line between "pointy eared human" and alien.

In DA: Origins, you could make excellent Elves in the toolset due to the superior control the toolset has compared to the in-game character creator. I suspect that I could take and attempt to use the toolset to re-create the elves of DA 2 (not exactly of course) but I think an approximation of a happy medium between could be created.

This.
I think they nailed it with Merril but some of the other elves just looked silly.
