I've been away from these boards for a few years, and I can hardly believe my eyes now that I'm back. It seems at least a third of all game threads are in some way related to the romance options in the game. I can't believe that this is what RPGs have come to focus on.

Remember BG2? That was done in a good way, the romance was there as something in the background; adding a little bit to the story of the Bhaalspawn, if you will. But the way it was done in DA2 and the way it is focused on in "Things you want for Dragon Age 3"-threads is staggering.

Please, focus on the core gameplay mechanics and create a good RPG instead of spending a lot of resources on what in my opinion should just be secondary content.

I have a feeling that a lot of you may disagree with me, but it just feels like there are many other areas where resources would be better spent.

I think there are so many romance threads right now because Bioware is asking what fans want to see in the game. and everyone has someone they want to be a LI so they each post it so Bioware can hopefully make it happen.

The romances in DAO and DA2 were fairly extraneous to the plot. I'm not sure why they need to be 'toned down.'

People like talking about romance because, well, people like romance.

Why exactly does there have to be an either/or? Why can't they focus on both to give us the kind of game that appeals to all fans of the series. Give us the "core gameplay mechanics" that make the best RPG's but why not also give us realistic and believable romances that enhance the gaming experience?

I seriously don't understand the fractious nature of the romance aspect of RPG's. In the best games, romance doesn't detract for the quality of the game, it makes it better. In my opinion.

It would be fun to watch how many people would still play Bioware games if you took out the dating sim aspect.

Just for that, I give positive vote.

I don't see how this is resources not being well spent. If you don't like playing the romance part don't. You have a choice. For people who do then let them. If that part wasn't in the game it would probably either be shorter or filled with meaningless things to do. I enjoy the romance option. Do I have to have it, no, but to me it gives the characters deeper relationships and it happens in real life. I play many games that don't have romance in them but I enjoy the ones that do too. It gives a variety to the story and to the type of games I play. I grew up playing PC rpgs starting with the Kings Quest series, Police Quest all those early games and have enjoyed the way that they have evolved and given more indepth stories that people can really become invested in.

People want romances because Bioware is good at doing romances. They put them in all of their games(that I know of, anyway), so people have come to expect it. You're only seeing so many posts about it because people want Bioware to know exactly what kind of romance they want.

As for myself, I want romances to be like they were in DAO. I adored the love scene and the kissing in public.

The romances are important to a lot of people, so I doubt this will happen. It's not like having romances is mutually exclusive with creating a good RPG anyway, whatever you put in that term.

Haha, like BG2...the game where there was a three-way catfight breaking out every 15 minutes over a male Bhaalspawn.

That was a good laugh, thanks.

People liking this feature too much probably isn't an argument that'll make Bioware scrap it.

I actually agree with the OP. Romances for the sake of romances seems a bit silly to me, but if it actually has some sort of plot significance (take Alistair or Morrigan for example) then I think it's fine.

There's a limited budget and limited time, but I generally agree. I've gotten involved in some of the romance plots (Liara in ME1, Morigan in DAO) due to wanting to learn more about the characters, but I personally couldn't care less if they removed the rubbing pixels from that equasion. I'm always a bit surprised to see the zeal with which some people advocate that 'romantic' aspect of it all, but who am I to judge. :P
