I feel like romances are good as icing but a lot of people seem to treat it as the cake...and from reading these forums i get the impression that the DA franshise is slowly being hijacked by people who would prefer a dating game rather than a fantasy rpg.
I take it you don't give the developers credit at being able to discern for ourselves what might be a good idea? To be honest, this seems like the same kind of panicked thinking that prompts people to slap down ideas they don't agree with... because what if the developers get the wrong idea?
We know romances are popular. Not liking them won't make them less popular. Lots of threads by the same people also won't make us turn the game into the romance simulator. We're well aware the forums are a big fishbowl, and anything said here is taken with a giant grain of salt.
Its easy to be concerned because its happened before(not with you guys but with other gaming companies). When the logic that "If the fanbase likes it, it must sell" becomes too prevalent and devs forget that Sturgeon's law most definitely applies to fanbase ideas, well bad things happen and the games usually collapse.
Its very comforting to know that you guys are taking our ideas with a large grain of salt, and using them as a supplement rather than substitute for your own ideas. We did become your fans because of your work after all, not because of whatever the heck that we come up with and think should be added.

However, before people start lumping Gaider and his team in with Chris just because he's gotten a mention here, keep in mind that both teams consist of, and are led, by brilliant writers and that they are two different kinds of teams that likely look upon certain narrative elements differently. While we know David leans close (me thinks) to Chris's mindset of preferring Romances that kick you in the Balls, other DA Writers Pit Warriors think differently, and David isn't going to poop on them just because he doesn't like Happy Ending Romances.
This is incredibly funny to me, just because on the spectrum of "happy romance ending" to "OHGODOHGODWHY ending" I tend to fall more towards the former than most of the other writers. Which means I tend to end up taking that side of the argument whenever the other writers are involved.
I mean, Luke? Luke will cut you ****es. And he'll like it a lot. Mary will gleefully rain hellfire down on the fans in general, and they will love her and despair. Jennifer pursues grim finality with sheer determination, and Sheryl just sort of swings around her plot hammer like some writer version of Harley Quinn. It's frightening, most days, to think that I OF ALL PEOPLE end up taking the "gee, guys, let's not cut off both their legs, gosh" end of the discussion. It's a bizarre place for me to be.
Thankfully, Sylvia is now here to push things towards the Light Side. She likes puppies and wildflowers and sunshine. With Luke whispering in her ear, of course, it's only a matter of time...
I support Luke whispering.

Not to mention have played every Bioware game countless times and in some cases for the sole purpose of experiencing a romance option I hadn't yet. I am, right now, playing ME1 as a femshep with plans of diddling Kaiden due to it being the only one I haven't experienced yet. He's such a sweetie
But yes thank you for pointing out the entire purpose to my post, good work!

I say get rid of them in DA3, focus on the core game instead.
Odd. I always think of companions and the relationships you make with them one of the cores of a BioWare game.
Oh, and when I say relationship I do not only mean a romantic one. That is just one of the options made available. Like you I do not always get into a romance in every playthru but I would prefer that option to explore that not get cut.

Really, what's the point of creating characters if you can't make them miserable?

So, basically... He hasn't said he hates them, he's just said exactly the same thing he always says - "I think that you get a lot more drama and impact from failed romances, or unrequited relationships that occur in games."
Something that I, personally, agree with.
He doesn't once say, in that interview (or any interview that i'm aware of), that he "hates romantic content" for computer games. He just doesn't support the BSN's idealistic view of fantasy romance.
How is being rejected or having your LI set on fire or impaled on a spike in the least bit romantic? I guess some people prefer tragic but I find it bordering on sadism.
Amusing though!

IMO I don't see why anyone would ever think that any of your games has ever come even close to a dating sim in any of your games. That's why I choose to use the phrase "double the content " in one of my last responses " to show how disproportionate the ratios were.
There hasn't been enough romance material to even get close to that but even if it was a "dating sim" is closer to a true RPG that my favorite example of a waste of time and money from another company could think of becoming.
If people don't want to romance they can just skip that content and get back to mindless button mashing and killing stuff ..
My whole issue is I believe that romance and character interaction and romance should be of at least equal importance just feel the proportions are unbalanced and always have been that is one of the reasons I am vocal
Take a Turkey dinner for example
This is my view on how it should be
Turkey - the main plot story
Mash potatoes - character interaction/ romance
Stuffing - is the game play and mechanics
It should al be able to on the plate in equal proportions
What I always perceive as happing as everything else takes up the whole plate and romance ends up being a splash of gravy or in some of your games just simple dinner roll.
All i am really asking for is that Romance interactions join the plate even something like I presented in this thread would make a world of difference's

Well I'm not "anti romance" I happen to enjoy some of them*Leiliana,Alistair,Merril and Fenris* It's the idea that romance should be top priority that I take issue with.Xilizhra wrote...
It's easier to talk specifically about the former. With the latter, all you can really do is complain about previous games and say that DA3 should be better.M25105 wrote...
Maybe a bit too far, but sometimes I wonder whether people actually care more about romance options for Dragon Age 3, then actual changes/improvement in the game and the overall atmosphere.
Also, I'm getting some serious "No fun allowed" vibes from the anti-romance brigade.

You know, it's funny. Way way back before we saw romances in RPGs, I remember playing Bg1 and wishing that certain characters were "romanceable" (Viconia, Safana etc), But when we actually got Romances, I was like...Meh... Not as good as I imagined they'd be.
Strange. That's my experience with real life romances.
