In some perfect world you would be right. The real world and Dragon Age are not perfect. Only a naive inexperianced person could have such confidence in such a statement.

Well, new to this thread. I've seen the ugliness that are other threads too. They're just typically not about topics I care about. I had only begun looking at this topic and saw something I think was uncalled for, but hey if being bratty is acceptable here, I can always leave.

Whether or not being bratty is acceptable, it is rather common.

I don't recall whining or complaining.

Perhaps. I do like a good discussion, though. It bums me out when a potentially promising topic gets shut down because people can't control their passion. I'd rather we all keep talking constructively. I guess in future, before I post in a topic, I should double check it for having become a possible lockdown candidate to be sure I don't invest my time in something that may not stick around long enough to enjoy.

However, before people start lumping Gaider and his team in with Chris just because he's gotten a mention here, keep in mind that both teams consist of, and are led, by brilliant writers and that they are two different kinds of teams that likely look upon certain narrative elements differently. While we know David leans close (me thinks) to Chris's mindset of preferring Romances that kick you in the Balls, other DA Writers Pit Warriors think differently, and David isn't going to poop on them just because he doesn't like Happy Ending Romances.
This is incredibly funny to me, just because on the spectrum of "happy romance ending" to "OHGODOHGODWHY ending" I tend to fall more towards the former than most of the other writers. Which means I tend to end up taking that side of the argument whenever the other writers are involved.
I mean, Luke? Luke will cut you ****es. And he'll like it a lot. Mary will gleefully rain hellfire down on the fans in general, and they will love her and despair. Jennifer pursues grim finality with sheer determination, and Sheryl just sort of swings around her plot hammer like some writer version of Harley Quinn. It's frightening, most days, to think that I OF ALL PEOPLE end up taking the "gee, guys, let's not cut off both their legs, gosh" end of the discussion. It's a bizarre place for me to be.
Thankfully, Sylvia is now here to push things towards the Light Side. She likes puppies and wildflowers and sunshine. With Luke whispering in her ear, of course, it's only a matter of time...
I stand corrected sir, and take much delight in doing so. I suppose I misread/misinterpreted things you've mentioned about romances in the past. My bad, as they say. Yeah, and considering what Luke did with Aveline and what amounted to one long proverbial "C*** Tease" I should have figured *you* weren't the Lex Luthor of the Writer's Pit ,gleefully lining us up to be used and heartbroken in some grand design. So, apologies. Everything else you mentioned doesn't exactly fill my romantic heart with hope though. (*Pause*) Although I do find the idea of Sheryl as Harley Quinn and droping "Mista Jays" around the office strangely delightful...

Don't freaking play the game then, christ.
Romances should never be so vital to an RPG that they friggin define it, and get its fans (or its detractors) to say: If you don't like the romances then don't play the game.
That we even find ourselves in this situation today means something *broke* along the way.

I've been away from these boards for a few years, and I can hardly believe my eyes now that I'm back. It seems at least a third of all game threads are in some way related to the romance options in the game. I can't believe that this is what RPGs have come to focus on.
Remember BG2? That was done in a good way, the romance was there as something in the background; adding a little bit to the story of the Bhaalspawn, if you will. But the way it was done in DA2 and the way it is focused on in "Things you want for Dragon Age 3"-threads is staggering.
Please, focus on the core gameplay mechanics and create a good RPG instead of spending a lot of resources on what in my opinion should just be secondary content.
I have a feeling that a lot of you may disagree with me, but it just feels like there are many other areas where resources would be better spent.
PS. Who seems to have only ME2 added.
If you haven't noticed, this site consistently removes your CD-keys if you don't log in regularily, and as I said, I have not been posting for a long time (I used to have KotOR, ME, ME2, ME2, DA and DA2 registered, but I just can't be arsed to re-type the CD keys all the time).
So I'm a "whiny fan" because I express my opinion on what appears to be a bad trend? I am sure they will take the majority of the opinion of the fans here into consideration.

haha! It certainly seems like a force of nature at tmes.
Discussing games is fun for me. The original topic was about a game element that some like and some don't. I, like many others, don't necessarily agree with the OP but I can appreciate their input. I added mine a page or two back. I like the romances but wish they were structured better. But I also wouldn't mind if there were fewer romance-able companions in favor of moments that develop comraderie between the PC and their cohorts. I still think side-quests for any of the companions should offer big approval points, though.

Yeah, I'm not against party interaction or banter at all, but I don't think that romances should necessarily be that big part of the game. I agree, some kind of cameraderie-like banter or companions with which you can have deep dialogues that affect your character (e.g. Dakk'on in Ps:T) are great if done well. Thanks for the input.
I'm a bit surprised that this stirred up such feelings, wasn't really my intent.

This is something I've suggested in the past. One male romance, one female romance, with twice as much content.
More options, more dialog, more cinematics, more permutations, etc. I would really like to see Bioware try this at least once.
They did it with KotOR. Lots of ladies didn't like Carth, and lots of gentlemen didn't like Bastila. And they were screwed because there was no one else to romance.

No, it doesn't prove the point. People use 'if you don't like X, don't play the game' for most aspects of the game.

Your original intent didn't seem rude to me so I took no offense.
I am surprised you think the romances are such a huge focus in the games. I don't see them as such even though I think the fans' focus on them can be over the top. But that's ok. We all like what we like. I see the romance topic as a lead-in to a bigger core issue: Gamers want a more immersive RPG. I don't think romances take away from that but add to it.
Now I wouldn't like it if the romances were the sole focus and the rest of the game was a slapdash job. So far I don't think they are. They are also avoidable. Romancing someone isn't important to do their side quest or the main quest. If one were to avoid all romances and find that there was no game without them, then I'd agree. But I've played as the lone ranger, and still enjoyed it, too many times for me to agree that this is how the games are.
