Tone down the romances!

That said, I would love for the romance options to be less... I'm not sure how to say it. Depending on my PC, I don't necessarily want to have to be an ass to an NPC in order to prevent turning 'on' a romance. I should be able to be nice, friendly, even flirty, to a degree, without triggering a romance unintentionally. There were a few points in game two where I was like 'eek, I was just being nice or charming, I don't actually want to get with you'. And then choosing the broken heart icon usually led to the NPC getting pissy. I'd like to avoid that, if possible, in Inquisition.
FWIW, YMMV.

Please DON'T tone down the romances - they are one of the best reasons to play a Dragon Age game. To be fair, it's actually the NPC's, and the depth those characters have, that are the best reason to play a Dragon Age game. I'd appreciate it if the devs treated the romances like the label on the box suggests, though. And no, I'm not talking about a TW2 variation, LOL, but fading to black just irks me, especially with the gratuitous amounts of blood and flesh being flung about/exploded throughout the games. If you're okay with demon boobies and necrotic compilations of mulitple bodies, it should be equally as appropriate to show bedroom time.

I think, honestly, the DA team has been really good with that. I never once felt that I was being an Ass to any companion with an interest that I didn't return. In DAO Zevran and Morrigan came on due to my being there for them and, while it resulted in some loss of approval (understandable given their emotions), I thought the responses were direct and honest as opposed to mean.
And, in DA2, I found it was rather easy due to the dialogue wheel to choose witty or flirty dialogue without *actually* flirting or being romantic. Avoiding that heart icon goes a long way. The only exception was Anders and his, apparently, sudden desperation for man-love that was so severe he thought, "Sure, I'll help you. We're friends." translated into, "Would you like to see my Penis?"

I know it's hard to believe but the guy who writes for video games, comic books, and books based off of video games is one of us, guys.

I've always been a fan of RPG's, and the day I picked up DAO and played it, I was shocked that there was romance involved. Then I had to give credit to the writers for being as creative as they were. It takes some talent to really flesh out a character in a story. I imagine it takes even more talent to flesh out a video game character. It's pretty impressive how these writers have succeeded in making so many fans fall in love with a variety of characters. Now that's power.
Creating the entirety of the story takes talent, but I know how hard it is to make a character 3 dimensional. Beyond that, I know it's even harder to make someone else actually give a crap about that character.
I'm satisfied with the romances in the Dragon Age franchise. They make the gaming experience unique to other RPG's. And they are not forced on the player, nor do they make up the entirety of the game. I think it's well balanced.
Bioware and their staff of writers have done a good job.

B: They're something we're pretty darn sure is going to be in the game

Not really optional if you're forced to speak with the companions, and then forced to make a "relationship" style choice with the companion about if you want to have a relationship or if you don't (Anders is a prime example of locking you into that situation, the other romances sort of don't lock you in as much as that one).
The companions could always show interest in you, but there should ALWAYS be an option out of the dialogue without hurting the feelings of the companion (so you don't lose affection, and so you don't lock yourself into a relationship that you don't want).

Thats not how it works with humans, when they want something and its not given they are disappointed, Anders was annoyed by it for like...3 seconds before moving on - thats atleast a few weeks faster than some in real life

Yes, that is still 'really optional.' You have the option to romance them or not. That you don't like the way an option is implemented does not make it invalid. People didn't like it when King Alistar dumped their elven Warden; that doesn't mean they were never in a relationship.

I'd just like some better pacing, in addition to the player having to do a little thought to get into a/maintain a romance. Perhaps not quite to the level BG2's minefields, but something similar.

That's when I decided I really liked the game. Any game that can leave you feeling gut punched like that is a good game.

Semantics. For that matter, exiting the game and uninstalling it is also "optional". Doesn't change the fact that Anders is a plot critical NPC, and you cannot avoid having a romance-based conversation with him if you wish to continue the main plot. Which means that people who do not want to be placed in a 'romance situation' actually do NOT have that option in Dragon Age 2.Maria Caliban wrote...

I agree that characters shouldn't be more passive, but Yrkoon is still right. There was a compulsory romance dialogue event in DA2, and short of quitting the game right there, there was nothing you could do to avoid it. I wasn't too bothered by it, but I can understand why some people were.

Not necessarily. I wouldn't call Isabela passive, would you? Yet unlike Anders, she doesn't force a romance dialogue upon the player unless he/she's flirted with her first.Upsettingshorts wrote...

Are you talking about that Cutscene that triggers when you enter Redcliffe? if so, then you are mistaken. You don't need to bring Alistair with you to Redcliffe, and thus you can easily avoid that conversation all together.Plaintiff wrote...

On the contrary, Isabela most definitely does flirt. Rather blatantly, I might add. Worse, merely accepting Isabela's quest forces the protagonist to flirt right back at her. Later on, after the quest is completed, Hawke flirts with her again with no input from the player. Now, after playing through the game six or seven times, I have developed a metagame affection for Isabela that allows me to overlook these two flirts. Now that I like the character, I'd make Hawke flirt with her even if there *had* been a choice. But the first time I played the game, it annoyed the living heck out of me.Yrkoon wrote...

So yeah, bad example.
All of the characters let you know that they are interested in you. Or, in Isabela's case, Hawke implies it himself. The only time people complain is when they don't like the character in question.

Anders forces nothing on the player. His attempt to flirt only occurs if you choose all 'Diplomatic' dialogues in that conversation. When he first talks to you after his initial recruitment quest, he apologizes for getting 'too weighty' last time you talked and selecting the broken heart icon will prompt Hawke to tell Anders that their relationship is "strictly professional", pre-empting any attempt Anders might've otherwise made.Yrkoon wrote...

In fact, I'm pretty sure you could just not talk to him for the rest of Act 1 and avoid the whole conversation altogether.

If not hardened, an Alistair who is crowned King will break up with any warden who isn't a Human Noble, for the sake of his duty to Ferelden.Emzamination wrote...

Not really optional if you're forced to speak with the companions, and then forced to make a "relationship" style choice with the companion about if you want to have a relationship or if you don't (Anders is a prime example of locking you into that situation, the other romances sort of don't lock you in as much as that one).
Yes, that is still 'really optional.' You have the option to romance them or not. That you don't like the way an option is implemented does not make it invalid. People didn't like it when King Alistar dumped their elven Warden; that doesn't mean they were never in a relationship.
Wait what???

If you make Alistair king and he isn't hardened he'll dump all Wardens except the Human Noble.
