Well Im going to chime in here and just say that I like the romances the way they are. Sure Id prefer if the content was a little more like Origins rather than "You're hot, lets have sex. Move in...? " just because it doesn't feel as meaningful.

Yeah, "You're hot, lets have sex in my tent." is way better.

More organic romantic plot developement is better, as is tying at least some of the romances to the main plot more closely. But there are things DA2 does better also, and neither game is head of class in that department overall.

Maybe DA3 should go all historically authentic and have arranged companions?

I think that should happen as part of an origin or something at some point. There's some compelling story there. I know we already got a little bit of that with the CE origin in DA:O, but I'm thinking something that sticks through an entire playthrough.

I haven't seen anybody clamor for anything like that. I'd say that's the prism of personal bias there. Nudity doesn't equal "trashy" *at all*, which anybody with any understanding of art or art history should know, often the opposite. And nobody's asked for any kind of explicit sex anywhere I've ever seen on the boards.

edit: reading through thread, I'm a few days behind, never mind me necroing points if it suits ya. ;)

On Chris Avellone and tragic romances:
I don't think any kind of romance should be exluded or favored, tragic, melancholy, hopeful, or sunshine and bunnies. They're all great if they're done well and true to the characters and story involved. Just comes down to execution. I think it's best if we get a variety of different types, even romances than can go multiple directions. Y'know, it's not a bad thing if any given romance in the game can turn out positively or badly depending on other choices made along the way. I'd love to see that. It's something that the stronger romantic "visual novel" type games out there do very, very well. It's a wonderful experience as a gamer.

I completely agree with this, and I think the point can be made generally as well.  I felt there were too many things that happened in DA2 that were going to happen regardless of what my character did.

I think we need more and better romances. It's a nice addition to and break from the story. The ones in DA2 felt a bit short. That was a bit disappointing, especially because there were not many party members. In that case one would expect a little more depth.

rpgs have always been about the story and interaction between characters(at least the ones I've played for the last 20 years, and I've played most of em that came to the states). If people discussing character interaction annoys you I recommend sticking to the elder scroll games.

Suddenly there's panic on both sides. Some think that, because there's a bunch of romance-related threads (because what else do people have to discuss? Unless their panic is that people aren't ****ing enough any longer? HOW DARE THEY BE EXCITED!) that we developers will become mesmerized and suddenly alter the game to make it all about romance.

And then others think that, because there are people shouting to get rid of or sideline the already-optional romances, we will suddenly nod our heads and go "we always do what people on the forums tell us to, so okey-dokey!"

Breathe, people. If you panic like this now, how are you going to make it through the period that still remains before any real info comes out? Gosh.

Romances have always been pretty bit-part and insignificant, despite what fans make it to be. What needs to be toned down are these thread.

I would just like to say that I wholeheartedly agree with BioWare's stance on this. I've heartily enjoyed the additional level of emotional interaction provided by the romance options in their games, but I don't want a date simulator. I want Dragon Age.

So, thanks Mr. Gaider and all of the other writers for both including such great features and also not letting them take over the game!  I look forward very much to the day Dragon Age 3 comes out.

I think people get too excited about EVERYTHING on the BSN. I could make a thread and a semi-serious argument about how purple isn't a real colour (it isn't) and should never be included in a game and people would take it so seriously they would have witty comments pertaining to purple engraved on their gravestones.

I would agree with this.

The living *statues* in the mansion was a surprise to me and not a good one. I wonder if that was out of zots or considered fine and working as intended in the overall plan.

People have different definitions of what makes a relationship "meaningful".
  • Some seem to think that soul-mates that are always happy together (like the Turtles song -- How is the weather?) is meaningful.
  • Some seem to think that star-crossed lovers (the ones that want to be together and can't) is meaningful.
  • Some seem to think that sexual tension between hated rivals is meaningful.
  • Some seem to think that proving one's love through trials before the other puts out is meaningful.
  • Some seem to think that friends becoming lovers is meaningful.
  • ... and the list goes on.
What do you think is meaningful? Is there an example you can give? Is there something that you would tweak in an existing DA romance (game or other media) to follow your definition of meaningful?

Do you want them to attempt that in a game? If so, how important is it for you to have that in a game?

We are only in the first few paces in what is a marathon of waiting and speculation for the next Dragon Age game. I like this board. Its got a nice mix of fun, sillyness (maybe a bit too many romance threads IMO), and good talk about a favorite francise of mine. However, focusing on this game only makes its realease seem like a date years and years from now. If anything the clamor will only get louder until we get some actual info.

Now as to your attitue towards purple, we'll leave that for a later discussion. I don't take kindly to bad mouthing the best color ever in public forums. :o

I'd rather play good game with toned down romances than game like Dragon Age 2 with extensive romancing options.

Of all the writers to choose from, you had to pick the one that has publicly stated his hatred of romances?

I've been hearing this a lot. I've known Chris Avellon to say he personally prefers "tragic romances" over the "happily ever after" type (a preference I share personally), but I've never known him to say with 100% conviction that he hates all romantic sub-plots.

Can someone *finally* give me a link to confirm his hatred of romances?

http://www.gamebansh...-interview.html

Considering that "Planescape: Torment" was born of Chris's hatred of fantasy tropes, I'd personally really like to see what could come of his hatred of romances. I say inundate the Project Eternity threads with romance requests until he succumbs and writes it personally, smoldering with hate the entire time.

It'll be brilliant.

Let's not forget how Sawyer himself made BioWare writer Patrick Weekes cry his poor little heart out, feeling all inferiour in regards to writing "masturbatory fantasy indulgence" (his words) for horny loners instead of actually trying to write a good game with a mature and complex plot xD

Your context there is a pretty gross mischaracterization of what that blog actually says.. Might want to look at it again.

Frak romances and the gratitious sexy time.

BG2 did it well. Other games not so much.
