I've been away from these boards for a few years, and I can hardly believe my eyes now that I'm back. It seems at least a third of all game threads are in some way related to the romance options in the game. I can't believe that this is what RPGs have come to focus on.
From the number of threads, yeah, you'd almost think that romances were what the game's all about.
They're not, obviously. It's optional content, but content with some very dedicated fans who like to discuss it at length. Like any topics that tend to get zeroed on here, once a group is caught up in a discussion the rest of the game seems like it doesn't even exist... pretty normal, from my experience, and not news to us at BioWare. I can safely say that romance will have no greater and no lesser place than in any of our recent titles.

Please, focus on the core gameplay mechanics and create a good RPG instead of spending a lot of resources on what in my opinion should just be secondary content.

We could talk about atheism in Dragon Age if you prefer. That seems to be a popular topic.

Or we could try to establish the definition of the term "role playing game".

I think that romance is what really seperates Bioware games from other games. Deus Ex had choices as well (or so I've heard) and yet I have no intention of ever playing it. Because I'd be missing the connection to the characters I can only get in Bioware games.
Skyrim was a great RPG and I spent a lot of time on it, but it beats none of the Bioware games, because it felt painfully cold and soulless.
I think Bioware might have spoilt me. I can never enjoy generic games again. >.<

Yeah, I can see that. I'm not trying to step on anybody's toes, I was just so surprised at the sheer amount of attention and affection that they seem to get.

I can see your point, but is romances really necessary to connect with the characters? For me, I will always feel a much closer "connection" to, let's say, Morte than I will to e.g. Leliana or Ashley.

I agree. I always felt that the most important and defining friendship of DA2 was not whichever disposable LI I had on that playthrough, but my "bromance" with Varric. *fist bump*

I think that while combat is what Bioware's games mostly about, romance is what helps it stand out from the ocean of games that focus on combat. Well, the story telling is what helps them stand out, but the romances are one of the ways that help players feel a sense of "ownership" over their personal in-game story.

Well I am glad to hear that it will be in the game as per what you have been doing normally which really hasnt had enough of the "screen time " as far as the actual romance content was concerned,
I am concerned by your statement means that you are not going to try to improve on what you have been doing and add substantially more content , options and resources ,
I Personally I would like to see the romance contented minimum of at least doubled to what you have done in previous games,

That's great to hear. I always liked how they were written. Though I'm still a bit upset Alistair dumped my female dwarven noble when he became king. I nearly cried. Still, it made some sense.
