I think it's about time we started talking about something else besides more romances (I still would like to see a female Kossith companion/Love interest).

So I'm thinking if DA3 does take place in the middle of the Mage/Templar war we would obviously have to pick a side. But why not join other factions as well, each with their own agenda to advance? I hope to see factions such assassins, warriors for hire, maybe even pirates.

I seriously hope factions will be included, and also done right of course.

Absolutely, I hope for more optional factions and with some interesting faction quest lines. Ideally it would be great if they are reactive, so the player's reputation with each faction might change according to player choices and the relationship with other factions.

If the game will be set in Orlais, there good chances that SPOILER

We'll partecipate in the Orlesian Civil War. I hope we'll have the option to choose a side.

I wouldn't want to go to a Skyrim style system with a bunch of disconnected faction quest lines

Base it on spec. A reaver could join a dragon cult. A blood mage could join a cabel. An assassin could join a guild. Add a short series of quests like "A Murder of Crows" or "Crime Wave" and I'd be content.

But I'm thinking each faction has their own reason for getting involved in the war, and depending on who you help it will effect the war. Like in Origins you could have the Templars or Werewolves instead of Elves and Mages. Only your choice has steepers consequences.

Factions could be an excellent thing in game, if done well.

On a side note, when I first saw the thread title, I thought 'fractions? I really hope there isn't any math in the game or even magic tricks, like dividing the PC by half."

I like the idea of assisting competing factions and having that influence the ending/epilogue. For example, you could assist an extremist Mage faction instead of a more conciliatory group and this has darker implications for the future.

I think would be a good thing but I'd be wary about it being disconnected from the main story, we don't want it too Skyrimy. (I like Skyrim but its very different to what DA3 should be).

^This

Some games do it lousy and its bleh. When done well, its awesome. Unfortunately a true compare and contrast would require an essay because of how detailed the various systems are. Definitely in the category of things that are desirable when done well.

That's why I started this topic: so Bioware can learn how to implement factions right.

To be slightly pessimistic, I think that the way you do things might be more of what you alter than what the result becomes. Storming the castle or bribing the army kind of deal. Either way, the castle is yours.

I doubt many of the factions will span more than one quest hub if we are to assume a DAO kind of world.

Dragon Age: Origins did the same thing: regardless who you side with the final mission played the same. If we do get factions I doubt they'll affect the game drastically.

Maybe we can do things like this: if I'm in charge of the assassins I can assign somebody to assassinate a leader of the Mages, or assign my Mercenary troopers to fight for the Templars.

I'd be happy if we get control over who our protagonist allies himself with. Does he side with the Mages or the Templars?? Or perhaps neither. I think that would be an interesting addition, not specifically choosing a faction to support.

I too still want female kossith companion and LI.

On topic, I'd like for DA3 to have factions. But if they have them they have to be done well. It made no sense in Skyrim how I could be the leader of the Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, Companions, and Mages Guild all at the same time. As long as it's not like that in DA3 I'd be cool with it.

I actually would like to chose not siding with either the Mages or Templars. Maybe we can join another faction like a Warriors Guild, or Elven Rangers and fighting to stop the war all together. My problem with DA2 is I was literally forced to pick a side instead of just saying "There's Anders. Kill him, avenge the Pope lady, and leave me alone."

Exactly, I like to be free to choose who I ally with including the option to ally with no-one. I think it would be an interesting tangent and opens up the possibility of a third faction that seeks balance between the Mages and the Templars.

I don't know, I'm on the fence about joining factions in a DA game.

DAO didn't have it- siding with the werewolves didn't turn you into one, nor did siding with the elves make you one of them.

Neither did DA2. So I'm unsure of how Bioware writing would handle actual factions you can join and take part in quests of.

I felt Bethesda did a good job with them in Skyrim, but I don't think that style of faction would make sense in DA. Especially since you have companions, a squad that follows you everywhere.

If we guess the game will be Orlais focused - which might be totally wrong, then factions other than Mages/Templars might include the Chantry, the Empress and the Rebels. As well as any outside powers that might stick their nose in like Nevarra and Fereldan. Plus the Qunari might invade, or the Dalish might make a grab for their ancient homeland.

Good idea. I completely support a "I'll fight for none of you" choice.

So please Bioware, don't make us choose Mages or Templars; allow us to tell them both to sod off.

Indeed, a bit of independent thinking. I don't support the Templar repression of mages but neither do I agree with the terrorism employed by mages that escalated the conflict. Therefore I support finding a balance between the two sides.

It will add a bit of variety to my various playthroughs at the very least

So do I.

I don't want either Templars or Mages dead; I want co-existence.

So long as its not some forced mating ritual like Synthesis in ME3.
