I just can't imagine him as a companion. Though I've proven particularly bad at guessing who will and won't be returning, and in what capacity, so I'll just hope I'm wrong. Really, really wrong.

He's not misunderstood - Not by me at least. I know he can be persuaded to join the Wardens and save the day etcetc..Poor Nate. So misunderstood.

The problem is, Cousland isn't aware that Nate is going to have a change of heart, so her decision was based entirely on the threat that Nate posed to her safety. She was a cautious person, and she wasn't sure she wanted to release a man that openly admitted he planned to kill her, and might still do it in the future.
It's hardly a misunderstanding on Cousland's part. It was a hard decision, but she believed Nate wasn't worth the risk.
I like Nate as a character, he kind of blended into the background sometimes but when I paid attention he was relatively compelling. However, he's dead in about 4 of my play-throughs. Either died in the epilogue or executed by my Warden.

I understand what you're saying. I guess it's just because of the way I play that I see giving him a chance is better than outright killing him. Maybe I'm too softhearted? I'm not sure. All I know is that I can never kill him and he is always in my group. I have never managed to play through either the ME series or the DA games being mean. I've tried, but it never works out. I always end up feeling bad.
The whole thing about him being dead in your epilogue is not a big deal. Anders came back too after being "dead".
Edited because I did do one thing "bad" that made me feel horrible. I let Loghain live in one of my DAO runs and hurt Alistair(my LI). I felt absolutely horrid about hurting him and him leaving because of my choice. Although, because of that, I was able to get to know Loghain(<3).
Maybe there is something to this whole being evil thing....

I wish he was in DA2, but honestly...with him possibly dying in Awakening i can either see him being brought back to life (Which fans have not liked Bioware doing previously) or make him very temporary . Maybe they might pull it off with an expansion character though, since not a huge amount would be pulling saves from it compared to a main release.

I hope i don't see him at all. The world is supposed to be huge, how the hell do I keep running into the same guys over and over?

Not saying I don't want to see some new characters. I love new characters. But having old companions show up, maybe not in the same role, but as important NPCs to the plot? Why not?

Rumor has it, it was originally supposed to be Howe and not Sebastian. But it scrapped because "he could be dead." If it's true, what a wasted oppurtunity. Think of having Howe there when Anders succumbed to Justice. It would have added a lot more having someone who knew him.The bane of the save import. (Although it didn't affect whether Anders was alive or dead....)
BTW, I'm on board for Howe returning. He was a lot more interesting than I would have ever thought.
Truth: Dragon's Age appeal comes from love of these characters and the world they live in. In a way, they're actually more pivotal to the series than Hawke or the Warden. It's why I like it. You know why people bought Gaider's comic and novels? Shale, Isabella, Varric, Wynne, Alistar, Maric, Logain, Duncan. You take them away, no would care. Howe may not be in the same light as them, but he obviously has a fan club.
