Do you mean like a larger pet we'd use in combat or something smaller(like a kitty) that we could keep in our base? I'd really like the interaction between you and your pet outside of combat to be expanded upon. Like maybe we could play with them. That'd be cool.
Yeah, like the stick gift to Dog from Origins. I do want a pet again, but not as a summon like Bioware did in DA2.

Dragons. Everything's better with dragons. And it's called Dragon Age.
Its the Chinese Year of the Dragon too. I doubt we'll get many round these ways though.

I would like a Wyvern thrown in too.

Both of the Dragon Age games gave us an animal companion, though in DAO he was a full party member and in DA2 he was a summonable Ranger-style pet. Both systems had their advantages and disadvantages, but this is not the thread to discuss them.
If DA3 follows this trend, that begs the question: what will the animal companion be in Inquisition? If DA3 is indeed set in Orlais and the protagonist is an Orlesian, a mabari would be out of place. Plus, it starts to be old hat after a while.
But what other creature could possibly take a mabari's place? A giant spider? A trained bear? A dragonling? No doubt those would be good in combat, but they lack the mabari's intelligence. Imagine Varric trying to teach a giant spider how to play cards and you'll see what I mean.
So what's the answer? Why not one of the strange creatures from Mark of the Assassin?
Here's the reasons why we should have a tame ghast:
1) They seem to be at least somewhat intelligent, so they offer at least some of the interactivity you had with a mabari. Granted, you can't really pet a ghast, but you could probably talk to it and have it respond.
2) They're good in a fight! Keep in mind that the ghasts go toe to toe with Hawke even when s/he's the Champion of Kirkwall. Their melee and ranged attacks HURT.
3) Depending on the type of ghast you have, they can use magic. Their brand of magic is really fascinating; they don't seem to be casting spells in the same way as mages, but actually channeling their magic through the dead.
4) They're accessorizable! You could earn approval or even change your ghast's abilities by giving them hats. Imagine the joy to be had from giving your ghast his own top hat.
5) They're adorable in a grotesque sort of way and they're rather amusing. There's good comedic potential to be had from a horrible little monster as a pet. Think Lilo and Stitch or Gremlins.

For those of us interested in exotic pets, I highly recommend the mod Simple Summoning for Dragon Age II.

I hope Rangers return as a Rogue specialization in DA3.
Oh, and Duke Prosper can summon his pet Wyvern. Tevinter Magisters are also known to keep pet dragons according to the codex.

Dogs normally hate me (and vice versa). But Mabari are intelligent enough to play cards and understand human speech.Lithuasil wrote...
All I ask is to make the mabari optional again. I don't want to find a filthy beast in my mansion again.
Although I do wonder why Hawke doesn't wash her dog more often. It seems like a good task to give to Bodhan or Sandal.
