I'd be fine with the DA:O design if all the male elves didn't have rock-hard abs.
I'd be fine with the DA2 design if all elves didn't have giraffe necks.

I wish they did revert to the DAO design. DA2's elves were awful. They looked like mutants or something.

Bolded for truth.

They didn't look distinct from humans as a different race, they just looked like malnourished, pointy eared people with Welsh accents (also known as everyone from Wales).

If they're looking for inspiration from Skyrim I hope they take the Elf design from that game into consideration.

So it fits the lore then.

Actually the lore states that the elves are regarded as beautiful by most humans. Personally, I think that Bioware was probably aiming for an overall elven look similar to Aerie in Baldur's Gate 2. That would have been A-OK by me, and there are some similarities there, they just didn't pull it off. Another casualty most likely caused by the truncated development period. Many of them did turn out very ugly.

I think I read that Laidlaw stated they were moving to a happy medium between Origins and DA2.

Except not all elves are starving. Anyway my point was that they didn't look different from humans aside from the above.

True, but it helps illustrate that they're an oppressed race. They won't go back to DAO style because just as many people hated that style as DA2's. As for basing them off of Skyrim's elves, my answer is no.

You have a point there but I wouldn't say the Dalish are oppressed. And if you don't mind me asking what don't you like about the Skyrim elves? I think they're **** ugly but if Bioware wants to make non-human races distinct then that's the way to go.

I don't have anything against Skyrim's elves except that they're skyrim's elves and that style should stay in TES. Also, as mav805 stated, elves are considered attractive by humans, which is shown with elves like Merill(Image IPB) and Fenris, so they should be attractive.

I was talking about the lore for city elves mostly. There are some similarities withBG2's elves and I agree, if they had more time all elves in DA2 would have turned out like Merill and Fenris.

Indeed.

Mike Laidlaw said on twitter that they are likely going to look for a middle ground between the two styles, rather than sticking with the DA2 style or going completely back to DAO's style, so apparently arguing against keeping the DA2 style paid off.

And arguing to keep DA2's style paid off. Oh my gosh, BSN has led to a compromise that both sides can be happy with!Image IPB

Perhaps. A middle ground between the two could be even worse for all we know.

We'll just have to wait and see.

I think elves need to be made even uglier. I want players to claw out their eyes first time they see one.

After a half hour of searching, I think I found an elf that fits the bill. It has the "human with pointy ears" of DAO and the physique of the DA2 merged together.

DA 2's elves were ****ing abominations. I don't know what the devs were smoking back then during development, but it must've twisted their sense of anatomy. Look at thos necks and those skinny bodies! Who the hell would find such a thing attractive? Oh, and to answer the wonderful exceptions that are Fenris and Merrill: They were given extra attention to give the player some eye candy when screwing them over. If you were honest, would you've romanced one of the 'background' elves in the city, those that differ immensely from Fenris and Merrill? Like that bald elf? Don't think so, huh.

Something hallucinogenic, while sat around watching Avatar.

I'm signing the no more freak elves petition.

However, I can understand why the devs wanted to make the elves appear differently. The style of DA:O was great and by far my preferred look for the elves, but maybe it DID look a bit too human. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but I can see the issue. It's just that they went completely the wrong road in DA 2 when trying to make the elves look more unique. It really broke immersion for me, at least, and even though the main character was pre-set, I just know I wouldn't want to play as a DA 2-style elf character myself.

Isn't the point of elves that they're slender?

It isn't really the POINT of elves, but yes, it is a characteristic that elves normally have.

The problem with DA2 elves is that they weren't only slender, they also had giraffe necks, big eyes, and oddly shaped noses.

I actually liked that, all other games elves just look like skinny humans with long ears. Here they had a more unique look to them.

How do you know?  They are going with another different engine again for this game, and we haven't seen any game screen shots depicting the DAIII elves.

The elves in DAO weren't elves. They were just humans with pointy ears. While i was turned off on the new look for some of the elves in DA2, by in large, most of the elves looked nice.

Because they said they liked the new look, and they aren't going to change it.

Because David said he wants elves and not humans with pointy ears and I completely agree.I can't help but feel those in this thread that want the pointy ear human design back aren't familar with fantasy races or have really bad taste.Elves are not related to humans in any capacity. The elves are a completely alien race and should resemble such which is why the Da2 elves worked.Unless the elf is half-human, then and only then should they use the pointy ear human model like they did with fenriyal.
