Dear DA Writing Team,

I just want to say that I love what you do. Really. The DA franchise is my favorite among a long list of much-beloved games, and I always find myself returning to them for replay when I'm taking a sick day. Or I'm snowed in. Or just because.

But if you could find it in the kindness of your hearts to grant me one little request for the next game, I'd be ever so even more obliged. I'll make my case here.

Can we please not have a dead mother in DAIII?

I realize that it makes for great drama. I also realize that it's a fantasy staple to make your hero or heroine undergo some sort of harrowing event before he or she can become awesome, and the loss of one or both parents is a popular way to make that happen. Frodo is an orphan. Bambi's mom gets shot, and we all cry. It's classic, I know. But here are some reasons why it shouldn't happen in DAIII.

1.) It's overdone. Don't believe me? Check out the picture below.

http://t2.gstatic.co...cNHdyY7haQccJqa
(From left to right: dead mom, dead mom, dead mom, dead mom AND dad, dead mom and maybe dad?, and comatose mom. I rest my case.)

Even in DA:O, we'd lost our parents in almost every origin. Heck, even the drunk dwarven commoner mom telling my Warden to become a prostitute was a breath of fresh air compared to the others. The only other exception I can think of is the dad you get if you play an alienage elf, but then all he talks about is your dead mother. Drag! Sometimes I even played the mage origin just so I could imagine that somewhere out in the world was a happy mom and dad waiting with cookies and a Daughter of the Year trophy for ending the Blight.

2.) Some of us have real-life dead mothers and don't love reliving that event every time we play our favorite game. I feel like I'm self-flagellating every time I watch Hawke cradle DAII's zombie mom (and no, "flagellating" isn't nearly as sexy as it sounds, unfortunately).

All that to say "You've done a great job with the dead mom (and dad - but mostly mom) thing. Five stars. What new feels can you kick us in?" Because seriously, I was personally pretty much over it a game and a half ago.

Thanks for reading - comments are welcome! Anyone who says "I love watching my parents die!" will be immediately branded an extremely odd duck. By me. Silently. In my mind.

How about a nice dead grandparent? One that's brought you up since childhood. :P

That's actually a pretty good point. I approve of living parents for the inquisitor
(And now I feel kinda bad for pulling the dead mother card in my own (original) writing, though in my defense, it's not used for that kind of drama).

Hmmm. Would they just not be mentioned, or would the Inquisitor somehow manage to have parents who survived the entire game? How many video game protagonists can say that, period?

Sareth' Parents survive the entire story, though his dad is more or less pissed off depending on what ending you pick :P

*raises hand*

Or the option of being such a bad-ass inquisitor you knock off your own parents....pretty sure they're traitors who sold old the Templars anyway....

Yeah, I definitely saw a Disney complex with companions (in both games) and our PCs. Gaider likes destroying families more than the Chantry.

DAO

1. Alistair - never knew mother, don't want to have debate on who his mom is
2. Zevran - mother dies in childbirth
3. Leliana - mother dies at young age
4. Sten - never knew parents (Qunari thing)
5. Wynne- orphan, never knew real parents

(I think Oghren had dead parent issues too, I don't remember, he's got a very mysterious past. Where are his fangirls?)

DAO PC

1. Human Noble- Family murdered
2. Mage - never knew parents
3. Dwarf Noble - dead mom
4. City Elf - dead mom
5. Dwarf Commoner - no dad, taking care of drunk mother
6. Dalish - never knew parents, dad dead, mom abandons baby.

DA2
1. Aveline - mother dead, doesn't remember anything but "impossibly long hair"
2. Fenris- mother is dead, doesn't remember parents anyway
3. Anders - ripped from family, put in handcuffs and sent to Fereldan from Anderfels.
4. Merrill - sent to Sabrae clan at 4 from Nevarra to Fereldan
5. Isabela- never met father (which explains EVERYTHING in a creepy Freudian way)
6. Varric- father dies when he is young, he is taking care of drunk mother, who also dies when he is very young.

DA2
1. Hawke- Dad dead, one sibling guaranteed to die, mother guaranteed to die.

I don't really want family to matter. Mage origin was my favorite, tied to no family, just a very, very stupid friend.

Yeah this sums it up nicely, not to mention in DA2 that you had the option of killing your other sibling, sending them away to be a warden and they hate you, or let them stay to be a templar/circle mage where they will most likely eventually die.

Perhaps Giader can find another way to kick us in the feels besides the dead family card.

Mother is dead.

I agree i'm not too big a fan of killing mothers off. It seems to be a a popular thing.
It doesn't make me sad, I think the Viscount losing is son much more heartrending than my mother dying for the 50,000th time in every game ever.
Inregards to the Disney Princesses, Tiana and Mulan have both parents. Maybe Disney is chilling out with that.

Gaider's Response:

Less dead parents, more "red weddings"

Also, @ Alexandrine Delassixe, where do you guys get (and add) your nifty Bi Banners?

I don't really like playing a hero with parents around.
Leandra annoyed me a great deal , I really like Uncle Gamlen better.
Doesn't mean i was happy she died at all.

The mage origin in DA: O was my favorite , parents were out of the pictures , the circle took you.
No big drama.

The things is i can't really wrap my head around a functional family .
Like going home for the holiday , and wierd family gathering.
"So , sweetheart , what are you doing lately with your life?"
"Oh you know mom , the usual...I kill stuff , torture people , I'm busy trying to sleep with a templar guy..."
"That's wonderful , darling, your father and i are so pround."

Brilliant assessment is brilliant!

As for what I'd like to see happen with our parents in DAIII? I really don't care. Not one bit, as long as we don't have to watch them get killed over. And over. And over. And over. And over again. Until we get a new game where we can watch a new set of parents get killed over. And over. And over. And over. And over again!

Agree with Xilizhra, but this probably isn't the best place to talk about it.  Posted Image

Why not just have the parents live far away or give them separate lives from the protagonist?

I mean, parents don't always hang around while their kids are alive and you don't HAVE to kill the parents to give the kid a right-of-passage. Heck, our culture has a very simple transition to adulthood that involves... *dramatic pause* ... moving out of our parents' homes and/or becoming self-sufficient. *Ta da!*

If our protagonist is an inquisitor, odds are he or she is no longer living at home on mom and dad's coin anyway, so it's okay for the parents to be alive without being involved with the protagonist's life and it's okay to give the protagonist emotional growth/strength/trauma (whichever) without just snuffing out the parents. You can do it, BioWare! We believe in you! :D

Well, I was trying to stick to the "Disney" theme of dead or missing parents, but that is a good way to mess up a kid too. Especially if it is just three soverreigns and a goat. Like, why not a pair of cows (to mate), a horse, and 20 sovereigns?

Isabela might not be pretty (according to Aveline) but she isn't that ugly.
