Yeah, I definitely saw a Disney complex with companions (in both games) and our PCs. Gaider likes destroying families more than the Chantry.

DAO

1. Alistair - never knew mother, don't want to have debate on who his mom is
2. Zevran - mother dies in childbirth
3. Leliana - mother dies at young age
4. Sten - never knew parents (Qunari thing)
5. Wynne- orphan, never knew real parents

(I think Oghren had dead parent issues too, I don't remember, he's got a very mysterious past. Where are his fangirls?)

DAO PC

1. Human Noble- Family murdered
2. Mage - never knew parents
3. Dwarf Noble - dead mom
4. City Elf - dead mom
5. Dwarf Commoner - no dad, taking care of drunk mother
6. Dalish - never knew parents, dad dead, mom abandons baby.

DA2
1. Aveline - mother dead, doesn't remember anything but "impossibly long hair"
2. Fenris- mother is dead, doesn't remember parents anyway
3. Anders - ripped from family, put in handcuffs and sent to Fereldan from Anderfels.
4. Merrill - sent to Sabrae clan at 4 from Nevarra to Fereldan
5. Isabela- never met father (which explains EVERYTHING in a creepy Freudian way)
6. Varric- father dies when he is young, he is taking care of drunk mother, who also dies when he is very young.

DA2
1. Hawke- Dad dead, one sibling guaranteed to die, mother guaranteed to die.

and you forgot the hole my mother sold me for three sovereigns and a goat thing

Bargain!

I much rather had that parent die, but I do get your point.  Still dead parent beats drunk parent any day.

Yeah, sure ... DA games are very creative in way to change characters into orphans, I have still bad taste after what I saw Hawke´s mother as the frankenstein nightmare....

I was under the impression that everyone in Thedas has to have mommy or daddy issues to get anything done.

I don't mind the dead parent trope.
And it honestly still punches me in the feels when one of the PC's parents dies.

Though I definitely wouldn't mind switching it up. If someone has to die, why not a very good friend or a lover or a dog or...I don't know, the possibilities for traumas is endless!
Maybe the PC was the result of rape and while their mother does love them, she can barely stand to look at them. Now that's a trauma.
(Although I can't imagine Bioware is willing to make rape such a central theme.)

I agree with brushyourteeth on this one. You don't have to have dead parents or siblings or whoevers to be a badass.

In regards to a PC, why mention parents at all? Even in an Origin story, there doesn't need to be any mention of a family. That doesn't mean the PC sprouted from the ground fully formed, but simply that their immediate family is not relevant to the story being told. Leave the family out, and let the player draw their own conclusions, or create their own back story.
As for companions, I'd definitely like to see less dead moms and less daddy issues, too. The dead mom smacks of the Women In Refrigerator trope.

(For quick reference: Women in Refrigerators is the trope where a female character, often a relative or loved one, is killed for the express purpose of motivating a male character to action. In this case, I think that definition can be broadened to motivating the protagonist, regardless of gender.)

Aurora's mother isn't in a coma.

There's nothing wrong with characters being parentless if it makes sense for the setting. Thedas is rife with violence and slavery and the treatment of mages means that the vast majority are 'orphans' by default. Also, I'm betting that the average life expectancy for your average peasant isn't the greatest.

Does it really matter if parents are dead or alive? They rarely show up either way.

I noticed this too. It's neat, we all have this little bond where we all lost family.... but that's an awful lot of coincidence. It was likely common for children to grow up with one or no parents in medieval times, but I think it's getting a little uncanny now. I'm not quite sure what having a mother would detract from. It's possible to get along with one parent more than the other and still love and have both around.

It's very common to treat the death of parents as a step into adulthood and maturity in storytelling. I think it's Aveline that says it's an important step when you CAN'T go back home. But I think it'd be equally, if not more meaningful, if there was a family the PC or companion leaves when he or she reaches adulthood. Or if they're not on good terms with their family, reconciliation would be nice to see, too.

Arora's parents are still alive!

But, yeah, it would be nice to have a family that won't die.

Yeah, this.

1) Aurora's mom isn't in a coma???
2) Dead parents were an easy way for Disney/storytellers to get around single parent/divorced parents stigma
3) There are plenty of strong mother figures in Disney movies, cherry-picking isn't a good way to convince anyone
4) What the heck does Disney have to do with Dragon Age?
5) Thedas is a place where terrible things might happen.  No, stuffing characters into refrigerators is not always the best solution but people do die in Thedas.  They die all the time, often in horrific ways because of the supernatural things that are present in their setting.  Hoping that the PC's loved ones will be somehow immune or invulnerable just seems like a foolish thing.

No. I think she faints at one point? But she's clearly alive and well at the end of the movie.

If you bring up a lesbian parental relationship in DA3 for the first time just to kill them, I freakin' swear you'll lose me as a customer.

Why? That sounds like a mark or progress for gay equality. Finally, lesbian parents will be treated exactly like hetero parents: Killed.

The OP is generalizing.  There's plenty of Disney mother characters still alive and well, some of them in the Disney Princess line-up (Mulan's mom, Tiana's mom, Rapunzel's mom, Merida's mom...)

Can't let Disney get all the credit for killing off mothers!  Bambi's mom's death needs to be taken down a notch.

The good fairies put everyone under a sleeping spell after Aurora is cursed.  When the prince kisses her, they all wake up too.

Also, anyone who thinks that living parents are boring should have been at dinner with my mother last night.  More drama and angst packed into two hours than most full video games.

I honestly don't know whether that's supposed to be a lesbian romance with a parent (?) or just a relationship with a lesbian parent... but either way being the parents of a protagonist is a dangerous, dangerous occupation. Their sexuality is irrelevant.

Well I was thinking more when Maleficent places the initial curse. I'm pretty sure the Queen collapses in the King's arms, as women are wont to do when faced with adversity of any kind.

Then imagine the benefits of being able to be groundbreaking twice, instead of just once. I agree with the OP in this case; there's not really a need to kill off the parents of the protagonist if they can't do anything anyway. Or even if they could. Hell, maybe one of them could wind up as a permanent party member; that would be new, though possibly inadvisable if you have racial choices going...
