As someone who loves studying French history (1400s onwards) the fact that it's set in Orlais is one of the few positive things I've heard about DA3.

Of course I don't expect Bioware to execute it well but that's a different matter altogether.

Please read my other posts in this topic, accent it's the first that comes to mind. Orlais doesn't add up, regarding the rest of the universum. It's too... well... colorfull, enjoyable, too pretentious.

As were many countries during the Medieval era.

Going to say yes. I really want to see Orlais and I really really really want to see Val Royeaux! I don't have anything against the exaggerated accent or that the place will be colorful etc. That's kinda why I want to go there.

It's too... well... colorfull, enjoyable, too pretentious. Rest of the DA lore isn't this at all, so it feels like whole new planet. It's like World of Warcraft parts of the world - here we have snow, than we have desert, than we have forest - but in terms of inner, spirituall and cultural feel. Orlais isn't the part of the lore for me, it's a part of fantasy kitchen sink, that is a logotype for World of Warcraft. DA is way too good for that<_<

You must have missed this somehow when you played DAO, but Ferelden is really the country that's not in tune with the rest of the world, not Orlais. Hence why people continually remind your Warden that the country is living in a backwater country that smells of dog. Even Sten mocks the place.

Thats the great part about visiting places like Orlais. You get to see what the rest of the world outside of Backwater Ferelden is really like. Instead of just hearing people talk about it. Orlais has always been part of the lore. They've been painting the picture of it since the first game.

It didn't need Kirkwall either....

..wait...no...thats not the best argument for Orlais.

...honestly though I'd rather Tevinter.

I want to go somewhere that doesn't smell of wet dog.

Or whatever Kirkwall smelt of.

I really want to see Val Royeaux, the Grand Cathedral, and the White Spire. If done well, Orlais should be awesome.

It really puzzles me how someone could say that Orlais doesn't "fit" with the rest of the setting, when that is where a ton of the action is happening in this timeline.

It seems to be that Thedas is in much an interpretation of a fantasy europe, where Ferelden (whic h indeed was backwater) probably was Thedas' version of England. That said, the accents heard in DAO and DA2 were accents heard with 'English ears' - which means that if the protagonist really is Orlesian, neither s/he or any other Orlesian will have an accent. You can't have an accent when you speak your own language (dialects are other cups of tea however), right?

But finding the correct type of English to depict this might be a completely different problem...

I say YES! It'll be nice to see things from Thedas from another prospective.

Gotta go with OP here and admit I am not a huge fan of fake French accents either but unfortunately given what we have heard Orlais is most likely where the game will take place.

I was really, really hoping to see Tevinter. Sounds like the most interesting place in Thedas by far, so the focus on Orlais sounds pretty disappointing to me. This is also because most Orlesians in the previous games were all extravagant and over-the-top, used for a weak comedy aspect (the banter between companions is far better comedy imo). That doesn't really make me yearn for a country full of those idiots. I know we will no doubt see a different side of Orlais in the new game, but for now the country is low on my list of things I want to see explored.

Firstly I think Leliana's voice is well sexy.

Secondaly if I'm not mistaken is it not "The Orlesion EMPIRE"? And surely an Empire is made from several nations with several cultures/accents/styles etc?

If this is the case then to assume that all Orlaisions must sound French is like assuming Indians spoke like in cockney rhyming slang when they were part of the British Empire.

"Mornin gavnor, her indoors fell down the apple last night, covered in claret she is. Best feed mi elephant"

I dare say that Orlais would be like medival Europe and have a variety of accents.

Say no to Orlais, eh? I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper. I fart in your gender direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

That was very helpfull, thank you. Now, I humbly suggest, that you spend some money and get yourself the 'civilized conversation' course.

I support OP NO to annoying virtual version of France. Really if the accents are going to be too French i think i will not be able to tolerate it.

BW next time please put the story in TEVINTER and allow us to be a powerful magister there. Tevinter is inspired by the Byzantine Empire which much richer and ancient than France. We could explore ancient cripts and fortresses of the old Tevinter Imperium.

Tevinter FTW

Why do all people in an Empire have to speak with the same accent?

Surely  it will encompass several countries?

The old Tevinter Imperium was also based in Orlais. The entirety of Kirkwall is an old fortress from the Imperium.

I would like to say big NO to actually anything that comes from Orlais - language (accent I mean), land, characters, quests, etc. Dragon Age franchaise has so rich and beautifull world, it doesn't need this irritating, pretentious fragment of the lore.

I respect that someone wants to dig in in this France-styled part of the lore, but I personally think it sucks. You can easily do showy accent in English, without running to France, which doesn't complement the world of DA AT ALL. It doesn't stick, it doesn't mash, is a puzzle that doesn't really give justice to the rest of the beautifly crafted lore.

So no, I don't wannna Orlais in any form in DA III and in future games in DA world, hope some people agree with me. Orlais is boring and it's like chalk and cheese!

Your request doesn't make sense, at this point. We have known that DA3 takes place in Orlais for quite some time now.

Look:

a) about the accent - yes, it's natural for different part of the world inside DA to speak with different accent, but for heaven's sake - NOT FRENCH. It's simply stupid, for the reason enlisted as B). But for now, please accept that: in English, if you wanna mark that someone is different than you, you can easily make it with clear American accent, British accent etc. On personal level I won't ever tolerate French accent in DA, becouse it's ugly (sorry).

B) If we still talking lore - look. Just look. We have Kirkwall - dirty city full of crime, that smells. We have a world that is full of darkspawn, blood magic, normal magic, demons, Blight, etc. And now we are taking part of that world and make it ridiculously colorfull. Look where this logic can take us:

- Battlefield-like, brutal world as least in terms of graphic design Serious Sam 3. Really? Series that always had been 'out there' and satire, suddenly becomes serious? It's not fun anymore!

- We take World of Warcraft world, make a square, throw in it Dante's Inferno level of gore, graphic design, message, etc. Does it speak to you? Really?

Orlais, apart from my personal opinion about French culture being boring and pretentious, is a land so colorfull, that doesn't blend in well with the surroundings. Everywhere else there a Blight, there's a war, there's conflict between the Chantry and mages and etc. And only in Orlais we have laughter at the level of lunacy.

Part me, I really like comedy and fun. I find Oghren, Alistair, Anders, Zevran and even Merill commentaries hilarious. And I want this level of comedy in DA III and future games. But Orials isn't fun! It's anti-logic ( B) section), and it's pathetic rather than funny.

I say YES to Orlais. I've been wanting to play there since DAO. Even moreso since MoA. So hush up and fetch my my rapier. There's swashbuckling to be done.

I approve of this message. The Dragon Age world needs more swashbuckling and therefor more Orlais.

Besides I wanted my Warden to retreat to Orlais and gather more Wardens during DAO but sadly she was stuck in Ferelden, so maybe I'll get my chance to visit now instead.

Like I've already said several times throughout this thread, being as that Orlais is an EMPIRE why does is have to be limited to one type of accent?

A real world Empire consists of various countries, cultures and languages/accents, so why can this not be the case for DA 3?
