It sounds like you never learned french history .. but I don't blame you .. I never learned , let's say, spanish history. But if DA universe is based on middle age europe, france (or orlais, call it like you want) was not a place with "a bunch of idiots dancing around with fancy clothes". It's just a stereotype ... like "hoo, americans only eat burgers and shoot everyone in the streets. I know it, i've seen this on TV". You don't like french-orlais culture? your choice, but you can't say that France in middle age was a funny place. There was wars, starvations, deseases, black death ...etc... like everywhere else in europe.
Like I said before, french accents made by non french-speaking VA made my ears bleed.

a napoleon styled revolution against the empress and aristocrates and chantry would be interesting

Heh. This is what I hear:

Dear BioWare: I don't know what Orlais looks like, or how you'll use it, but there are French people there and they're stinky. I've decided I want something else, which in my mind will look way better.

To whick I can only responsd: Thanks for the feedback. I guess we'll see? :)

I spent the previous Dragon Ages smelling like a dog, and Neverwinter 2 smelling like a Swamp. It can't be any stinkier than that.

...or can it?Image IPB

Looks like a troll thread to me, or maybe the OP suffers from acute frankophobia (fear of all things French). It's realy hard hating a place we never been to, and can count the number of people we met from there on one finger. Our only reports on the country is from the orliasian occupation of fereldan and from disscontent immigrants. I'd want to see what the orliasian think about the occupation.

 Brilliant.

I can understand the concern of it being set in a place populated by loads of people who only speak in a French accent, but that's like going to Africa when it was part of the British Empire and expecting to meet a load of white natives all wearing bola hats, sporting umbrellas and drinking tea.

And from a practical POV Bioware could use the same actors more - getting them to perform with different accents (French, German, Spanish etc.) - surely they'd get more milagage out of the voice-over folk too by doing it this way?

Armour, language, real problems oppose to just the huge impression everything is funny.

Orleasians seems to be a bunch of idiots who are too stupid to be killed by darkspawn. Maybe they are darkspawn themselves, who knows. Orlais doesn't fit within DA universe. End of story.

Rubbish and rot you uncultured Philistine. The Orleasans are the pinicle of manly fashion, who have carved out an empire. Your argument smacks of jealousy regarding their fashion sense. Is this what you think happens in Orlais?

Here's a question that comes to mind.  Assuming DA3 is set at least in part in Orlais, would Bioware be recruiting voice actors mostly from France, or Quebec?  I ask because it occures to me that Canada has a not insignificant French speaking population.

Orlais is more than just France, there are quite few styles used from medieval and morning Baroque of Europe, church from Italy/France/Spain, architecture is realy mix of everything but the Chantry and Circle got the greater theme of medieval times /theme - the greatness of god and meaningless of human/, and Inquisition - well it cames from again from church which is the main theme of whole medieval Europe, like a Thedas the main engine of everything was the maker and magic.

It was their decision to pick a France, Spain and Italy for Orlais - do I like to see something different ? Yes
Am I dissapointed from their choice ? No, there can be still lot of good stuff.
Otherwise I hope that whole story won´t be again like the DA2 about one city and traveling around in near mountains and mines, there is lot of stuff which could be interesting like lot of things from previous games...

I would like to look into Tevinter or the Anderfels which look like very dark places where to live, but despite the BioWare said that DA should be just a trillogy there is still lot of unsuded potential...

Do you know the way to Orlais?
I've been away so long. I may go wrong and lose my way.
Do you know the way to Orlais?
I'm going back to find some peace of mind in Orlais.

Orlais is a great big city.
Put a hundred down and buy some shoes.
In a week, maybe two, they'll make you a star
Weeks turn into years. How quick they pass
And all the stars that never were
Are parking carts and grooming nugs.

Fame and fortune is a magnet.
It can pull you far away from home
With a rapier in your hand you'll face demons.
They'll try and drag you to the fade
And there you are with your companions
You'll pack Bodhan's cart and ride away

I've got lots of friends in Orlais!
Do you know the way to Orlais?
Can't wait to get back to Orlais.

I say yes to Orlais.

It's going to be faaaaabulous!

On a more serious note: I'm looking forward to seeing the divide between Nobility and Common Folk. We heard a little bit about it in Dragon Age Origins (very little) and we know it's also implied in Dragon Age 2 that Orlesian Nobility look down on common folk, as if they're sewer rats rolling around in filth.

It'd be nice to witness, and experience, just how deep that cultural and social divide goes.

Nobles vs commons will be interesting, but I'm far more intrigued by the elves vs humans. By all accounts its far worse in Orlais, borderlining slavery, and we haven't had a long first hand encounter with this kind of opression(only short ones with the off-hand Tevinters and that one Qunari mage).

Well, it's also pretty much Andrastian Tevinter that pretends to be nice, so I'm sure there are some people who don't want to live within an evil slaveholding empire with a veneer of piety consisting of supporting a vicious, tyrannical religious institution, albeit one that's been conveniently defanged.

But I suppose your interpretation is fine too.

If I have any concern about Orlais, it's that it'll suffer from being too much of an unrelentingly unpleasant place that I won't find much reason to care about it. Like Kirkwall.

That makes a lot more sense. But DG's post was a characterization of the OP's statements, which basically does amount to a dislike of French people and their accents. None of the things you mentioned were brought up by the OP. Moreover, the setting is overall dark fantasy(though I maintain that the Warden's story was not dark fantasy). Fereldan isn't exactly a land of sunshine and tolerance.

Both Ferelden and Orlais are crap, but they're different shades of crap. Ferelden is crappy because it lives in a crappy time period; Orlais is crap because it's actively malevolent, and played a big role in keeping the world as a whole crappy.

Nevertheless the OP does not bring up Orlais' flaws as a reason for not going there(and I actually think they're a good reason for going there). The OP comes off as not liking French people/accents, and maintaining that Orlais is a bad setting because the people there are French and silly. I think by your own statements you believe that Orlais isn't exactly silly.

I suppose. I hate Orlais, but one must respect one's enemies to get anywhere against them.

I support OP NO to annoying virtual version of France. Really if the accents are going to be too French i think i will not be able to tolerate it.

BW next time please put the story in TEVINTER and allow us to be a powerful magister there. Tevinter is inspired by the Byzantine Empire which much richer and ancient than France. We could explore ancient cripts and fortresses of the old Tevinter Imperium.

Tevinter FTW

And then we would have to put up with annoying Italian and/or Greek accents? Image IPB
