First off, this isn't really a new/fresh build, since I assume lots of Engineers use it. It's largely based on my Shotgun Reave Engineer (here: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/261/index/13242221), but I like the twist in this one :)

I now have everything covered: shields/synthetics with overload/energy drain and organics/armor with incinerate.

Where I am now (lvl 20):

Overload 4: Area Overload
Incinerate 4: Incineration Blast
Combat Drone 4: Attack Drone
Tech Mastery 4: Mechanic
Energy Drain 1

At 30, the build will look like this:

Overload 4: Area Overload
Incinerate 4: Incineration Blast
Combat Drone 4: Attack Drone
Cryo Blast 1
Tech Mastery 4: Mechanic
Energy Drain 4: Area Drain

This is how I lvl'd my Engineer following my Reavebuild, replacing reave with energy drain when going against synthetics:

Tech mastery 4: Mechanic
Reave 4: Area Reave
Combat Drone 4: Attack Drone
Overload 4: Area Overload

Instead of taking a shotgun (Evi), I decided to pick up the AR (Mattock) for faster dmg-dealing when getting up close. I know I can use a Locust or Tempest for that, but screw it, I wanted a Mattock, I got a Mattock

Squad

I started out using Miranda/Jacob until I had Mordin and Garrus (I picked up Jack and Grunt first though). Since I don't need Mordin anymore for the Incineration Blast, and pleasantly surprised myself in leaving Miranda home as well most of the time, I gotta figure out a favorite new squad to mess around with.

First teamie:

Since I like squad incendiary ammo (SIA) A LOT, I have to choose between Jacob and Grunt. The first has Pull Field, the second has Concussive Blast. I choose Jacob.

Second teamie:

Hmm, biotics don't really work well (damn, I forgot the word for it) with my tech, so it's either gonna be a shooter/tech- or shooter/biotics-hybrid. Samara will work very funky with Jacob... he pulls 'em, she throws 'em (will that detonate the field? If not, I'll bring Thane to detonate it with Warp.
Hell, I'm just gonna do some team comparison, I like typing things :wizard:

People who always stay on ship from now on (unless it's their loyalty mission):

Grunt: charges in. Dies too fast.
Tali: funny tech, but so frail... with a shotty? No way.
Jack: biotic with a shotty, no thank you. She always dies a couple of times on reapers anyway.
Zaeed: funny stories, good shooting, but Garrus, Jacob and Thane have better stuff.
Kasumi: yay for shadow strike, but about half of the time she tells me she can't do it, thens tands up and gets shot. Next!

People who I always consider taking:
Garrus: it's Garrus! GARRUS
Mordin: he rocks. Period.
Samara: better biotic than Jack, also has AR instead of shotty, means she can stay further from the enemies, better survivability.
Jacob: Shotty, SIA and Pull Field. Heavy Risk... but the priiize...
Thane: sniper extravaganza, can assist Jacob in detonating pull fields with warp. Awesome.

People I'm not sure about:

Miranda: great support char, awesome squad boosts, but I like heavy gunning, she can't do that.
Legion: can't really decide, you only use him for 1 mission, after that he never gets a special role in the collector base.

Now then! Lots of text, gotta make a decision, eh?

Team pairings:

Jacob + Samara: SIA, Pull Field + Throw Field.
Jacob + Thane: SIA, Pull Field + Warp
Garrus + Thane: everything covered except bio 'splosions. Great damage but no squad ammo (shredder sucks).

I could go on, but the above three seem to suit my AR draingineer best. I'll run with Jacob + Samara/Thane.

Any big comments on the build or the team, PLEASE leave a message! :o

My only question would be: Why max Overload when you are going to max Energy Drain as well The damage is the same.
If you really want max Energy Drain and max Incinerate, I would leave Overload at rank 2:

2 - Overload
4 - Incineration Blast
4 - Attack Drone
3 - Cryo Blast
1 - AI Hacking (point sink)
4 - Mechanic
4 - Area Energy Drain
* 1 point left over

Mordin would be your best squadmate. His Cryo Blast cooldown (recommend Full Cryo Blast) is 4.5 seconds when evolved at rank 4. You can essentially cast your own Incinerate/Overload/Energy Drain > Mordin's Cryo Blast to freeze most grouped enemies.

Jack and Samara/Morinth are also good for the same reason since they can also have quick cooldowns on Pull and Throw. And do not discount Jack's Shockwave. That can stagger a lot of enemies.

Thanks for the reply, Red :) It's always you who comments on my topics! :D

You're right about Overload 2, but it's just that I don't want too many skills on my quickbar, I only use these from 1 to 5: Drone, Overload, Unity (always has been on 3 so I'm used to that), Incinerate, Drain.

Besides, I can't fill another tree when I have Overload on 2, and since I prefer to rush in with guns blazing and setting bastards on fire or incapacitating them with Overload/Drain it's no use to pump points in Cryo (which I can't max).

That's just my view on it ;)

I just don't see the point on having points in both Energy Drain and overload.

Mass Effect 2 doesn't have tech combos I'm afraid.

But your squad is amazing. As long as you get those shields and armour down quickly and use that drone effectively, you're on a roll.

The "problem" with Overload is that you need it at level 2 to unlock Incinerate.

You do not have to use your own Overload as a quickslot.

Cryo Blast has an inherent radius of 1.5m. At rank 4 you can increase it to 3m radius (Full Cryo Blast) or add 2s of freeze duration (Deep Cryo Blast). So you can leave it at rank 3 and it will remain decent.

I would basically do what Red suggested, except go Cryo 2 and AI Hacking 2 (I think that is all you have pts for).

Pair with Mordin (for Full Cryo Blast after you Energy Drain), and then you have options for squadmember 2...
  • Jack is a good pair with Mordin and an engineer. Get Pull Field. You could also level to Squad Warp Ammo if you want.
  • Samara is an alternative to Jack... Leveling her is a little trickier. I would consider going Throw Field and Area Reave so you can have a power to instakill husks (throw) and one for anti-armor.
  • Miranda has Overload for more shield stripping, and Warp is ok against Barriers.
  • Garrus has Overload as well and CS is ok for a little CC. +5 Bro-factor
  • Kasumi's Improved Flashbang is the strongest teammate powers in the game.
  • Thane is ok, but is best if you have LOTSB so you can spec out of 1pt in Shredder ammo to max Warp and Throw.
Overall I recommend Mordin / Samara or Mordin / Jack for the bulk of organic missions. For Haestrom I go Miri and Garrus for Overload all over the place (actually I tended to take Miri and Garrus on a disproportionately high number of missions regardless of my class :)). Tali / Garrus for Treason. Legion / Garrus for House Divided. Mix in Kasumi on Collector missions to make Harbinger near harmless (via Improved Flashbang).

Reverted back to reave/drain build, I feel like I'm weaker as incinerate/drain engineer, dunno why, but it takes longer to finish missions this way :\\

@ capn233: yes I have LotSB and yes, Thane has Warp and Throw maxed, just like Jacob has Pull Field and SIA maxed. We're having a blast fighting off waves of enemies!
