Thank you!

So is Flemeth physically present in the comic at all? Or is she just kind of hinted at in some kind of visualization of Calenhad's backstory?

You're welcome.
Well, the witch appears in a flashback as a shadowy figure wearing a feathered robe and with golden eyes.

I guess my question still remains though- why is the dragon blood so important? We've seen a ton of reavers and not many seemed terribly special. Is it the notion of King's blood + Dragon blood? Or is it some special Witch / Dragon blood combo?

That's what me and some others have been complaining about. It's hard to accept dragon blood as being so special, the secret to the rebirth of the Imperium when we've fought Mercenary Reavers in DA2 and crazy inbred Reavers in DAO.
Honestly, with all the dragons the Warden killed you could probrably make an army of dragon-powered mages.

Calenhad was given dragon blood by a Witch; presumably Flemeth; which passed to his descendants. Titus is using the dragon blood in Maric to power his spells because he wants to restore Tevinter to its formers glory. Varric destroys the device hooked to Maric which seems to have affected Titus. I assume it severely weakened him.

Only her daughter.

Because, man with Calenhad blood may wake dragons.

There's a witch with a hood on hiding her feature.
So Flemeth or not Flemeth?
We can assume it's her , because well...it's always her.

We still don't know why the Dragon blood is so important , Yavana told Dragons were a vital part of the world.
We know human drinking dragon blood get stronger .
Yavana wanted Alistair blood to awake some dragons , I guess it's a bit like the taint awaking Old gods without ,well, the corruption thing.

And Titus was creating what look like ...a magical egg of doom from the blood of Maric.
I'm not sure if he jsut draw power from it , or a weird dragon was supposed to come out of it.

I hope Maric dies before the end of the comic, I have this fear that David Gaider is going to put him on the Ferelden throne so it cancels out our choice of making Alistair / Anora / both rulers.. Exactly like they did with Udina ending up Councillor in ME3

I'm disapointed Calenhad was a Reaver. We've killed plenty, we can even become one, what makes Alistair so special?
Still, it started better than "Those who Speak." I hope all three issues take place in the fortress.

Sif! Those who Speak started awesome, best in teh series love it when all go's to hell at the ball and Aurelius freaks out when he discovers Alistair is a Templar

One thing about this comic though is the story keeps reminding me of Skyrim, How Dragons once ruled Thedas, How it turns out the great heros are actually Reavers from Dragon Blood (sort of similar to Dragonborn)

I wonder if Emperor Kordillus Drakon the founder of Orlais was a Reaver? I hope not, I dont really like the idea of all the founders of the human nations only having been able to do so because of their magical powers =(

I predict that Titus is just about to deal the killing blow to Alistair, when Maric uses the last of his strength to jump in the way and take the hit himself, thus saving his sons life. Alistair sees red, hulks out and kills Titus like a badass. Finally he and his father will share their first and last emotional tender moment as Maric dies in his arms.

You heard it hear first, folks!

Except that Maric is awesome but Udina is a jerk.  Maric for King in DA3!  If he can recover and be well enough, I think it would be a really nice turning of a great plot circle.  Plus I'd hate for him not to have a chance at living free for some years after everything that happened to him as a prisoner.

Besides, it doesn't have to negate previous choices necessarily.  Alistair might be happy to let his dad rule again, but maybe Anora or the Warden wouldn't.  Who knows?  ;-)

Edited to add: Come on, it's a tired plot convention that thought-to-be-dead relatives can only survive until the end of the plot arc in which they were discovered.  It would be much awesomer, in my opinion, for Maric to confound expectations and actually live.

Those kind of things are really obvious .
I just hope at least he will tell him that Fiona is his mother.
Well , it wouldn't help Alistair much since he knows nothing about her , but at least it would make the fanbase happy.

I can't imagine Marric getting the throne back , for tons of reason.
Anora would be really unhappy , King Alistair well ...would keep on eating cheese till his calling , and every warden queen/king fans would riot the forums.

No, this is bad news! A new royal line controls Ferelden and any Theirin blood is a threat to stability. That has-been has to fall back. Quick! Someone inform Queen Anora and send payment to the Crows. Gotta take care of this ASAP.

Exactly! Sadly, I doubt the old guy is getting out of this one alive.

Or more specifically, the witch told Calenhad to go to an old, almost dead dragon and drink its blood, using his own run of the mill dagger. I would have expected there to be some kinda  witchy, blood magicky enchantment or enchanted dagger or something... but that didn't feature in the story Sten told Alistair. I was wondering if that meant any Joe Schmoe could have gained that same power. And, that dragon apparently just... sat there the whole time, according to the summary graphic of the encounter, like it was giving up its blood or something.

So ingesting dragon blood makes you a "Reaver", or does it require a specific dragon to gain Calenhad's powers?

Also, I guess it increase the chance that the Pentaghasts are all "Reavers" (or descendants), considering that the dragon's blood codex entry says about them using it as a cooking ingredient (the Pentaghast who wrote the entry had a great-grandfather that used powered dragon blood like salt).

I agree, I suppose there's a big chance Maric won't survive this. Although I would love to see him in the game, but to expect that is probably unrealistic.

Oh wow, good point. Hmm, looking at the Dragon's Blood codex, it makes a distinction between dead and alive dragon blood. I wonder if this means that Calenhad's dragon was alive at the time...? But again, it does make it sound like any talented dragon hunter could do this.

Collecting dragon's blood is extremely difficult, even for the most accomplished dragon hunter.
First, one must locate the increasingly rare creatures. Second, one must bleed it. However, I believe that at the moment of death, the blood loses something special—a certain fiery essence, perhaps. Of course, bleeding a live dragon is quite tricky.

Well yes drinking dragon blood makes you a reaver ,I guess there's some ritual like the Joining.
Maybe they add some sugar and cinnamon to make it less disgusting , who knows?

We don't know if Calenhad's power are different from your everyday reaver , though I'd guess Reavers are quite rare .
Anyway , the dragon Calenhad drank from was really old and about to die .
It was like a vintage wine.^^

And it's interesting about the Pentaghasts , Azarhal.
I was thinking that dragon hunters may have drank the blood of their prey ,dragon scale , bones etc are valuable ...so it wouldn't surprised me if they did.
But I'm not sure if the blood is cooked , it would keep its properties.

Ah dragon age , where every answers bring a thousand questions . :D

I wonder if there's more to it, other than what was shown in the comic. Perhaps Flemeth did give Calenhad some ritual or enchantment or something. It's a story that's been told for generations and the exact details could have been lost over time.

Eeee the way part 1 ended! Must have more! So fun that this is told by Varric; I suspected that it would be.

No one steals Anora's throne! Not even the bloody creator of this franchise!.

Sif! Those who Speak started awesome, best in teh series love it when all go's to hell at the ball and Aurelius freaks out when he discovers Alistair is a Templar

That scene, in itself, was good. A bit stupid for Alistair to just present himself to his enemy in the seat of his power while the entirety of Alistair's army is a continent away; like literally, they are about as far away as you can possibly be; but it's entirely in character.
The problem I had was that Titus appears in issue 1 for apparently no reason beyond showing us who the villain is and then we never see him again while our adveturing trio goes deal with something else.
This issue 1 reads like the climax, things are finally happening and they show no signs of stopping.

Agreed.

Speaking of which, Maric has to have slept with at least one she-elf by the end of issue 3. It's like an unwritten thedosian law, King Maric must sleep with at least one elf woman whenever he appears.

I don't think there's an elf around , Mister JB.
Well there is Isabella ...
She wouldn't say no to an old badass King , in chains.

It's a Tevinter fortress, there has to be at least a dozen elven slaves around.

That was in the novels! This is the comics, yo! The "sex with an elf" trend gets cancelled out when you switch from a protagonist to a Macguffin.

Well , I was thinking if they all end up in the fade...
Marric also had elf vision in the fade.
I just hope Alistair won't find out how he was conceived while rescuing his father. Oo.

Mmmh, why is everyone calling the witch a *she*?
In the comic, while Aristen is telling the legend it shows a robed masculine figure, with muscles, abs, chest up in the open and no horns, as a witch of the wilds should have. I admit it'd have more sense if it were Flemeth or one of her daughters, but *he* really looked like a *him* to me.

Or am I missing something?

How was he conceived? I bet it was during something weird.

Hmm, maybe I'm remembering something wrongly, but I thought he was conceived the, erm, traditional way. Granted they were on the run from the Darkspawn in the Deep Roads, and it was a quickie... At least, assuming Fiona's his mom. If it's Goldanna's mom... well, that story may not be as fun to hear.
