I would like DA2 to allow the manual drawing of weapons.  Not just have them drawn at the start of combat or when relevant powers are activated, but let us pull them out and put them away as we see fit, even out of combat (possibly only out of combat - I can see why you might not want to let players accidentally sheath their weapons during combat).

Aside from being a nice extra aesthetic touch and level of control over the characters, this also has tactical implications, particularly when drawing your weapon takes time.  In both DAO and DA2, the drawing animation takes long enough that it becomes tactically relevant.  If we could draw our weapons before the fight starts, we'd gain an advantage.

Even just being allowed to initiate combat ourselves (like in DAO) would simulate this to some degree, as we wouldn't need to be drawing our weapons after we've already been attacked, but ideally I'd like a button I press that draws my weapons.

You've sort of done this before in two different games.  In KotOR, Jedis could activate their lightsabers, even out of combat, though there was no tactical benefit from doing so.  In NWN, weapons could be equipped and unequipped from the hotbar, which allowed free-form weapon swapping, but also allowed weapons to be put away or drawn on command.  And the NWN approach has other advantages in terms of customisability.

But, even without an NWN-level of hotkeyed equipment, just the ability to draw or sheath (and I use 'sheath' simply as the opposite of draw - I am not presupposing the presence of actual sheaths) weapons ourselves without having to enter to leave combat would be very welcome.

That option is available on the XBox 360. I press 'A' to unsheathe my sword/hammer/axe/whatever. Hawke sheathes it after about 10 seconds if he doesn't get into a fight.

Really, though, I don't see the point. Any tactical advantage it offers is so minor as to be non-existent.

Same here. I mean, you're only going to be unsheathing it in combat anyway, unless I missed something and you can randomly fire arrows while standing around with no enemies present.

I think focusing efforts on other things would be better when the best reason for it your proposition is: "Tactical Unsheathing!"

That would make an excellent band name, btw.

I imagine if this was an Old West simulator, keeping your gun ready would be pretty important.

But this is Dragon Age. If I so choose, I can draw my blade, stand there for a full minute while being peppered by arrows, chug a health potion and then charge into the battle with no discernible disadvantage.

Battles are not so much decided by who hits first as who hits hardest.

EDIT: Good one, naughty.

I agree with this 100%. I don't really have anything to add in this convo except I'd also like something very small to go with this.

Please get rid of the mysterious floating weapons on my back and bows without strings. Add scabbards to go with the drawing sword animations? Show me pulling a string and watching the bow bend on my archer? Please?

The only weapon that should be levitating on my body should be the Murder Knife. Because we all know that thing is enchanted with mysterious magic...

That is A LOT more work than you think.

I do understand some technical drawbacks to this, actually.

I realize it's something that will take a lot of work. But you know, I find games that focus on the little things to be the best games. Because when you play those games, you can see the passion behind the development when all the little things are done well. Witcher 2 is a good example of a game that paid attention to small details like that and it resonated throughout the game.

Not necessarily since they are changing Engines. It might be easy enough with whatever it is the new engine is called. Admittidely it would have been harder with the old engine, but no more!

If at all possible I would love to see this in the game (along with the the removal of floaty weapons and no bowstrings >.>), it's just one of those smaller details that really adds something to the gameplay experience and makes me think that the game is really polished etc.

It makes sense that you wouldn't be able to draw your weapon while knocked down.  As such, knockding someone down before they draw their weapon would have advantages over knocking down an armed opponent.  the armed opponent can get up and hit you - the unarmed opponent needs to get up, draw his weapon, and then hit you.

In a perfect world, I'd like to see disarm abilities, as well, but that would require that characters all be allowed to equip more than one different weapon (Varric).  These little stylistic touches BioWare employs to help "tell the story" have wide-reaching gameplay consequences.

Sylv gets what you're referring to. Since draw has more than one definition though, he's right that everyone's taking it literally.
