Seeing as how we've now had two fairly different character designs for the Elves in the Dragon Age universe, how do you think they should appear in DA3? Should Bioware keep the DA2 design, bring back the DA:O design, or give them another redesign that differs from both?

Like in DA2, but shifted more towards the human norm.

Not sure if that counts as "neither" or not.

In retrospect there probably wasn't enough to differentiate the DA:O elves from humans, whereas the DA2 elves look different but are so different that they've become repulsive.

I guess that puts me in favor of a design that can find a happy medium between the two.

If the choice is just narrowed down to DA:O or DA2 however, I'd much rather see a return to the DA:O design.

Mike Laidlaw said on twitter that the devs are likely looking for a halfway point between the DAO and DA2 designs of elves.

The Origins style was better in that they looked attractive, yet smaller than humans.  I have an elf that I used in the city-elf origins story that is one of my canon wardens, and I think that it particulary fits the more "elven" description with larger slanted eyes set up high, higher cheekbones and smaller jaw and chin.  For some reason there has always been an error with her photo, so I made a new one like her, but left her without hair so you can see what I'm talking about.  And as soon as it comes up on the DA server I'll show it to you.

One of the problems with Origins in differentiating between humans and elves is that most of the hair styles covered the elf's ears.  Perhaps with this new engine, we'll have flowing hair that will expose their ears from time to time?

You should have put 'in between' as an option. Mike Laidlaw has stated that he suspects it will be a middle ground between origins and 2 - Whether it will be I don't know. I prefer origins look, but I'm going to vote for neither.

A halfway point would be nice. I rather agree with Jerrybnsn in that I would prefer DA:O elves, but with more distinct "elven" features like larger eyes and ears, smaller jaws and chins (and noses please), slighter figures, etc. As I keep saying, there are ways of differentiating elves and humans without making one ridiculous.

I think the halfway may look something like this. It has the "human with pointy ears" of DAO and the more dextrous physique of DA2

Something along these lines would be good.

If I had to choose between the two then the Origins version, but a version between the two would be ideal IMO.

I liked the elf face design in DA2, but they had a laughably tiny frame so it was kind of hard to take them seriously in a fight, so... half & half.

My favorite look for elves is actually created by tmp7704's Elf Update mod. It takes the elven bone structure from DA2 and more or less imports it to DA:O.

For me that's proof positive that it's the DA2 engine that makes characters look ugly, because with tmp's mod the elves in DA:O look absolutely gorgeous. This doesn't just apply to elves. It's nearly impossible to create a good-looking Hawke, too. So just give me a new engine that makes DA2 elves look good =)

As long as they wear shoes, I don't care.

The elves in DA2 were an abomination. They either need to go back to DA:O or do another complete overhaul of DA elves and hopefully get it right this time.

Do you have a screen shot you could share with us?  I'd like to see one.

Indeed.

Beyond a couple of elves here and there, the general population of elves in DA2 were freakin horrendous.

..then again, the art style of DA2 was pretty freakin horrendous.

Redesign. The Party members look fine proportionally but they should create a elf generator for npcs. (hello wynne with your young bosom and neck you) As long as there not 'morphed' human-models. (Improved from DAO but DA2's still look off to me. the skinny human face with pointy ears, 'human' hair, normal body and stick limbs)

Perhaps look at the physic/bone structure of real-life models? broad shoulders, Cheek bones, brow arch, hair line. Colour theme (obviously not just green and browns. lighting of elf camp or w/e)

challenge-from the neck down i should be able to tell the persons race. hahahahahaha go go team

Preferred DA2 to the short and pointy ears humans. Hell, all the whiners who want races back in DA3 could just make a short human and pretend it is an elf for all the "design" that went into DAO's elves. Are they ugly? Well maybe to humans but then again you likely don't think chimps are pretty either.

Fix the ears, DA2 elf ears stuck out far too much.

I voted Origins' design, but I think a middleground would be perfect.

I feel that they want Elves to appear quite different than Humans, but something prevented that in DA:O. That said, I did not like the "differences" in the second Dragon Age.

So, I opt for neither. I don't want the Christmas Calendar Santa's Elves Playboy Bunny girls nor Teen-fantasy novel book covers. They're not alien enough. The second Dragon Age elves made my mind go to the Adobe Photoshop smear tool. They lacked detail.

I want an elf (male and female, not just female like many in this thread seem to want) that looks significantly different than Humans (and not some fantasy Human with pointy ears) and has the same amount of details that Humans have.

Maybe they wanted players to get a sense of "All Elves Look The Same To Humans", but I'm past that. After dealing with them enough, I think players should have the option of spotting the differences now.

Is that where it's from, and I tried to find a male elf that looked similar but couldn't find one so I'm not just opting for female elves. I don't think they'll look alien, though, because in the lore it states that humans find elves attractive, so they probably will remain like "near-human" in appearance.
